Is Bouye even the best corner on his own team?  I like the guy but he excelled because the Texans probably have the best CB group this side of New England.  That helps.

I think the other factor is what style of D the Packers want to play.  They have two man cover guys in Rollins and Randall.  However,  they need a guy that can do both - man and zone.  To that extent I'd rather they have a Kareem Jackson or Stephen Gilmore.

That doesn't mean his agent hasn't had discussions though. I feel like we hear this "GB hasn't said anything" stuff every year, we hear it about our own FA's and we hear it about UFA's. After the fact we always find out that "GB offered X amount of money" or "GB inquired with UFA X", but none of that ever leaks out of 1265. Agents manipulate the media in all kinds of ways, maybe he hasn't told Lang there have been discussions. If it gets out that GB is trying to re-sign him, and Lang has expressed interest in re-signing, then other teams looking for Guards will start pursuing their next options. If it sounds like he's walking free then teams will actively pursue him.

He says he wants to be in GB, so if GB offers him a competitive deal then I'm sure he would take it. If he leaves then it's because GB offered him lower than the market was dictating. Likely "a year too early vs. a year too late" situation if that happens.

TT doesn't budge with these negotiations it seems, when he has a value in his head for a player then he sticks to it. Unlike some GM's who are impulsive or panicked, Ted would rather throw a young player to the fire than make a bad financial investment. It's frustrating for those that want an immediate need filled with a proven player, but more often than not I think it ends up being the right decision in the long run.

Also good to point out that the Packers tend to sign their own damn near at the stroke of midnight before FA begins. IIRC that was the case of Cobb and Sam Shields.

Ted moves at Ted's speed. And I don't see much changing this season either.

"------------ sign Free Agent Pro Bowl Guard TJ Lang"

You overpay a couple million to get the fan base excited you're all in!!!!  The Vikings built a new stadium selling "off season" hope.

It would be fascinating to see what a team recovers financially by signing a top free agent. I'm sure it's a lucrative business venture if wins and losses aren't included in the equation.

Ted, get this guy.

Strengths:

  • Physical corner
  • Cover corner who rarely allows separation
  • Excellent tackler
  • Hard hitter
  • Can run with receivers in and out of breaks
  • Fast feet
  • Can quickly flip his hips to turn and run
  • Athletic
  • Agile
  • Can play bump-and-run
  • Body control
  • Can turn and run with receivers on deep routes
  • Intelligent about when he initiates contact
  • Ideal height, length
  • Not a gambler
  • Used to playing on an island
  • Should be able to play well in zone
  • Fabulous contributor against the run
  • Reliable
  • Leaping ability

More... from his combine reports.

able to defy the perception that taller skill players don't have the footwork and agility that shorter players do... will thrive initially within a zone scheme, where he can use his burst and length to cover ground and remain active in plays. He is so talented athletically that he could likely be tested early on an island in man coverage and excel, and he possesses the confidence and field presence necessary to take on such a task.

He's 6'2". Some would say he was mis-used in the scheme.

I don't get the Spriggs and Tretter at guard thinking. We run a Zone Blocking scheme. I believe that better suits the big lard butt's better. I see guys we already have on backup roster better suited for it in the long run. And/or maybe a draft pick in the mid rounds. I think Lindsay may have regressed a bit and I do see Tretter as the better center but he might be injury prone. Of course both Spriggs and Tretter can play guard in a pinch but seem better suited to the tackle position. Now, we may move away from the Zone Blocking scheme when/if we move away from Lacy type power back's. But for now I predict we let Lang and Tretter go and draft a guard who may have some experience at tackle but best suited to guard at GB. That would leave Barkley as the backup center.  yah, I know.

Yet, that gives TT more cap money to spend elsewhere.

Actually taller, leaner guys like Spriggs and Tretter are BETTER suited to the ZBS. That blocking scheme favors more athletic technicians who can get to the second level fast. Power Man Blocking schemes favor big road graders, like in Dallas. We don't run a pure zone blocking scheme all the time though, it's more of hybrid scheme with both concepts that is ultimately more focused on pass protection than run blocking.

TT and Guards

Marco Rivera - All-Pro Packer guard, 33 years old - signs with Cowboys in 2005 - 4 year contract - 20 million (9 million guaranteed - the most for a guard ever at that point). Plays two injury plagued years.

Mike Wahle - All-Pro Packer guard, 28 years old - signs with Panthers in 2005. Made the Pro Bowl in 2005 but was cut less than two years later.

Josh Sitton - All-Pro Packer guard - 30 years old - due 8 million in 2016 - cut at end of training camp.

TJ Lang- All-Pro Packer guard - soon to be 30 years old.

TT and Tackles

Chad Clifton - LT - Packers extend him in 2010 at 34 years old for 3 years and 21 million.

David Bakhtiari -LT - only 25 and Packers extend him 4 years.

My guess is that TT will let Lang walk. Like Rivera, Wahle, and Sitton we should wish him well and let someone else pay him his retirement enhancement package. You know someone will - maybe the Bears will pair him with Sitton again. TT has shown he's willing to pay good NFL tackles big bucks even when they get older. He has a track record of letting guards walk.

Thanks for the clarification. So, we ran a blocking scheme better suited to Monty when we actually had Lacy at RB? But I can see the need for pass blockers over run blockers. It also explains the value of big bull rushing nose tackles that can walk a center back and why Lindsay was better holding his own against it and why Tretter was better at the next level in run blocking. Thanks GD!
