Packers WR Ty Montgomery reveals severity of ankle surgery es.pn/2amvjPg

Montgomery said his surgery contained three parts: tight ropes inserted into his ligaments to hold them in place, a cartilage repair and -- perhaps most serious -- a microfracture procedure on his talus (a bone between the heel and fibula and tibia).

“I think there’s a stigma with a sprain,” Montgomery said. “But what I think a lot of people don’t understand is sprain means partial tear. And people forget I had the surgery in December.”

I don't like the sound of that at all...the whole incident seems rather bizarre now, acting like he might come back and then he ends up with the dreaded micro-fracture surgery?

WTF?

"Monty has an ankle, he will be day to day while we monitor the situation."   -MM

I'm intrigued what Marquise Williams could do with more coaching. When we were there he was very up and down with his accuracy, but his passes had a lot of zip. He looked quick and is definitely a threat to run. Definitely has the tools IMO, but seemed raw. I was more impressed with him than Callahan FWIW.

I'm partial to Marquise Williams, but only b/c he saved me at QB on my college fantasy team last year.  Definitely has the athleticism, no idea how he is as a passer.  And he went to UNC, so you know he's smart.

Discouraging:

Thumbs down

On a night when rookie free agent Geronimo Allison continued to impress with his precise routes and soft hands, third-year pro Jeff Janis was digging himself deeper into a hole. Janis has not had a good start to camp and his opportunities seem to be shrinking. It’s a rare night when he gets so open that you actually notice it and when his hands fail him as they did Wednesday night, his prospects fade even further. Maybe Janis will turn it on in the games, which was sort of the case last year, but for someone in his third season he can’t keep having so many negative plays. The worst of his efforts was on a goal-line route in which Rodgers put the ball right into his arms. But as he went to the ground, he let the ball slip through his arms, negating what should have been a short touchdown catch. Janis wasn’t the only one dropping balls –Davante Adams had a bad one over the middle in the red zone – but at least Adams has been making plays. Janis just can’t seem to win enough routes in practice and is putting immense pressure on himself to be great in the games. His special teams play will make it hard to cut him, but if he can’t contribute as a receiver, the Packers are going to have a difficult choice to make.

Encouraging:

» TE Jared Cook (foot) and WR Ty Montgomery (ankle) were running full-speed routes as part of their rehab. LB Sam Barrington (ankle) was also doing cutting as part of his drills conducted on Clarke Hinkle Field. WR Jordy Nelson (knee) was doing foot drills on the side.

Can't the Packers deflate the ball a bit to make it easier to catch?

Neither player should be dropping passes. You would think Jordy, Cobb, Abby are locks to make the roster based on their veteran status and/or the fact that they've had good camps so far. I think they are willing to gamble on Abby's injury history because good Slot receivers don't grow on trees and his upside his high. You would think Monty makes it because he showed so much promise and they still need to find out what they have with him. So you have Adams, Janis, Allison, and Davis fighting for the last two spots. Davis has an edge because he has intriguing skills and is a mid-round draft pick which TT seems to covet, but he still needs to find a niche to lock down a spot. So really it's Adams, Janis, and Allison fighting for that last spot. My money is on Adams with Allison going to PS, but you never know.

I know that we are supposed to have a "deep" WR group this year but I remain unconvinced. Dropped balls are a killer esp. in the Red Zone.  Janis! only make the team based on his ST abilities. I would not be too surprised to have both him and Adams getting cut. I would prefer that both get cut based on the drops. Move on to guys with potential for cryeye. These guys have shown that  they are not going to change for the better.

I wonder if Janis! can move to safety? He CAN tackle.

Remember: With Goodson suspended there may be a four week opening for Special Teams specialist, which may be Janis!'s saving grace regardless.

And Janis! might be able to learn Goodsons spot on D as well. Who knows?

Yes, let's cut them both based on a week and a half of TC.

yes that and all of last year.  (NO PROGRESS)

But not the year before that (Adams).

not a "Great Year" but ok, however he HAS regressed BIG time. Not a good sign.

Not just this year, last year too.

Here are a few comments, quoted tweets, and thoughts on last year's WR, from the 2015 training camp thread.

Justin Harrell made the team for a few years over players who arguably deserved it more. Draft status plays a big part, this team has shown it will be very patient with high picks hoping to unlock their potential. My guess is Adams and Davis round out the top 6 with Allison on the PS and Janis sent packing. Hard to tell though, weird year at WR.

There have been many more positive comments about Adams this TC than negative.  I'm still concerned about him but he's doing a lot better than Janis has, just going on TC reports.

Not to re-dredge a complete analysis of last year's problems on offense, but at WR, talent wasn't so much the problem as it was speed.  There was no deep threat, which allowed man coverage to work on Jones, Adams and Richards, and teams could run a single safety deep which allowed them to jam Cobb and stuff Lacy. It was all about lack of a deep threat.

Ted and Mike are not allowing that to happen again.  Jordy's back, Janis and Abby are moving up the depth chart, Jones is gone, Richards is slimmed down as is Lacy, Cook is on board, and they drafted Davis. They learned a hard lesson about the need for speed, and they are not letting last year happen again.  They even signed this guy Binford, who was a dance(!) major in college and his entire football experience consists of 1 year in the arena league, it appears almost solely on the basis of his 40 time, which they clocked at 4.3 and is rumored to be as low as 4.22.  They want speed options and this year there are several. We'll be fine.

I like James Jones as much as the next guy, but at this point he could be covered by a linebacker, as Driver was his final year, due to a lack of speed. It's hard to get real separation when you're that slow because it also allows a defender a better chance to recover from a mistake.
