I always laugh at this time of year that we're so up in arms about the #6 WR.  I think last year was the #3 TE.  We need games to talk about!

Top 5 WRs are all but set with Jordy, Cobb, Adams, Montgomery and Abbrederis.  #6 is between Janis, Davis and Geronimo.  Like last year, if we have to count on our #6 WR in the playoffs, no matter which one of the three it is, our chances at a Super Bowl are seriously diminished.  And that's not just the Packers - that goes for every team.  So really, arguing about the #6 WRs ability to contribute this year is kind of a fruitless exercise, as no team has a #6 WR that's going to be anything more than below average.

I say go with the player that can play special teams at #6 WR.  If injuries hit and they need a real WR, they can sign a street WR (or a practice squad guy) that plays better on offense but can't play special teams.

Correct. And we all know damn well had AR played and gotten so much as a hang nail, Bob would be writing about how careless MM was and what a poor decision it was to play your franchise QB in a meaningless game, etc etc.

Banjo (and really much of the ST players) looked pretty good last night without him. Yes, I get that it's pre-season but I don't think GB would be doomed if Janis is unable to be the gunner. Then again, maybe with a club on his hand he can do some beat downs with that thing running full blast down field.

With a healthy hand and listed as a 3rd stringer, there's a decent chance he would have been cut anyway. IR looks like his destination.

Ok, while right and all, that kind of rational, logical thinking is completely out of line with the tenor of this thread.

Try being more of a team player CUP'F'!

@ArrickUpton First on the field: Blake Martinez

IN AND OUT

Packers QB Brett Hundley is back in pads. Will practice for the first time since Aug. 1

This could be potentially problematic: Packers WR Ty Montgomery is not in pads.

Packers WR Ty Montgomery's absence is not injury related. Just his first rest day since coming off PUP. Easing him back onto field.

Morgan Burnett not in pads today

LB Jake Ryan still out

Green Bay native Kyle Steuk, rookie center signed by the Packers yesterday

Despite teammate Davante Adams' best efforts to hide it, #Packers WR Jeff Janis has a cast on his right hand.

Randall Cobb (calf) and Mitch Henry are back

2 MIN Drill

Seems the calf issue for Cobb is minor. Made a couple nice grabs on passes from Rodgers

in 2-min drill vs. starting defense

Rodgers went twice to Davante Adams during drill Adams dropped back shoulder against Shields and then couldn't time up on free play.

Blake Martinez prevented a touchdown to James Starks on cross-field throw from Rodgers.

Punting

If the punters were trying to hit short line drives then they succeeded. Unless they were trying something I don't know about it was brutal

Really, really rough

With full rush, Masthay hit punts of 43, 42 and 41. Mortell hit 45, 47, 36 and 43. Only Masthay's 43 had decent hang time.

Team

backup QB Brett Hundley getting team reps, opens drill with sideline completion to Davante Adams.

QB Brett Hundley gets starter reps in team period, but Aaron Rodgers handled lone 2-minute drill. Hundley missed week, needs reps.

Brett Hundley leads Abbrederis beautifully down the sideline for a deep completion against scout D

Abbrederis gets loudest cheer of day catching deep ball from Hundley, but Hyde had him sized up coming across before pulling up

Great throw from Hundley on deep out to Perillo, who made the catch and tapped the toes to delight of Nitschke Field crowd

Crazy catch by Justin Perillo in pass under pressure near sideline over double coverage

Not a bit of rust for Hundley on that series. 4 of 4 including a beauty to Perillo.

Hundley has been right on point despite the week layoff. Ball right where it's supposed to be out of WR breaks

Packers rookie WR Trevor Davis makes a nice route adjustment, cutting under CB Demetri Goodson to catch Brett Hundley's sideline pass.

WR Geronimo Allison with a chance to make a huge play on deep ball it he lets CB Josh Hawkins strip it from him.

Then on next play ball thrown slightly behind Allison bounces off his hands and is picked off by Carl Bradford.

Allison has had a lot of good days. This is not one. Let deep ball get knocked away then has drop for INT by Bradford

When OLB Kyler Fackrell gets a one on one rushing outside his quickness is hard to deal with. Even athletic Jason Spriggs has trouble.

Perfect deep ball from Aaron Rodgers, hits Davante Adams in stride after he beat CB Robertson Daniel deep. Maybe Adams' best play in camp.

Quite a throw by this scout-team QB, No. 12. Flicks his wrist and drops a perfect 53-yard rainbow to Davante Adams for a 75-yard TD.

Team drills close with 2 big plays by scout team with Rodgers at QB: Bomb to Adams over Daniel, then Richard Rodgers on seam route

@ArrickUpton

Perfect day for some football

That's all for practice after 1 hour, 51 minutes

Assistant Coach Pressers

Zook on Jared Abbrederis on special teams: Heck of a returner. Great instincts & can catch the football.

Ron Zook on @abbrecadabra's 34-yard free-kick return: "That was all him. I don't know if we blocked anybody ... that's what Jared can do."

Zook sees Perillo in the mold of Kuhn in that he can line up in a lot of places on special teams.

Ron Zook says he's working Justin Perillo in "more and more" in #Packers STs. Good sign for him. Zook likes Perillo's versatility on STs.

Zook on Jeff Janis' injury: Feel bad for Jeff...He's got a great attitude. He'll get back as fast as he can & pick up where he left off.

gunner options without Janis, Zook mentions Daniel and Goodson and Rollins but "you hate to lose guys that are pretty good."

Zook seeking consistency in his punters. Didn't get that today, which surprised him.

Dom Capers

DC Dom Capers on preseason debut: We got a good look at the young guys. We'll have a big challenge this week (vs. Oakland).

Capers on Datone Jones: I thought he got off to a good start Friday night. Good physical plays. We think he can set the edge in the run game

Capers on Matthews: He knows what we do. Just a matter of getting him ready. He still rushed on 3rd down. Not like he’ll lose anything.

Capers on ILB: We wanted to make sure we got a good look at Carl Bradford on first and second down. Got a lot of good work.

Dom Capers on Joe Thomas and Carl Bradford: "I thought both those guys had a couple flash plays where you saw their ability show up."

Capers using headset: In terms of mechanics, the substitution, that all went very well for the first game.

Packers DC Dom Capers says most important thing for Clay Matthews and Julius Peppers is practice reps. Just "a few" preseason snaps.

Capers on Dean Lowry: He’s a young guy. We need to continue get a good look at him. Know won’t have Mike Pennel first 4 games.

Edgar Bennett

Edgar Bennett on Lacy: Off to a good start. That was one of the goals, wanted to run the football. First unit did a good job of that.

Bennett on Perillo: He’s versatile. Has ability to separate and get open. He’ll extend arms and catch away from his body. Strong hands.

Packers OC Edgar Bennett asked if Brett Hundley looked "sharp" in today: "He did. It was a positive day. He did some pretty good things."

Bennett on Callahan: Managed the run game. Look at his 2-minute drive. Displayed some of his talents. 12 plays, 80 yards, put it in the EZ.

 Winston Moss

Winston Moss on Datone Jones: Really played well. Showed some growth in being able to play all three phases. Set edge. Covered. Pass rushed.

Moss on Jones: We don’t want the ebb and flows. He has to keep it going. We want him to perform day in and day out

Moss said Datone Jones dropped a few more pounds during the break between minicamp and training camp. Settling in at outside linebacker.

Moss on OLB threats: All of them. When was there a game there were 3 safeties in a game and we had two of them. All have pass rush threat.

Moss said ILB Joe Thomas has come on strong. He was "at one point fighting to make the team, and now he has a significant role for us."

Moss said "the light flicked on" for Carl Bradford against the Browns. Coaches were happy for Bradford, whose work ethic they love.

Moss on Bradford: Play speed and decision-making. Doesn’t hesitate and strikes with conviction, shows a lot there. Run game can be better.

Moss on Fackrell: He's athletic. Teams will plan accordingly. So trying to build moves to counteract what offense will do vs. him.

 Mike Trgovac

Ringo is "way ahead" of where he was as a rookie last year, Trgo says.

Trgovac on Pennel: Not treating him any differently other than would have played him earlier. Giving him his reps in practice.

Trgovac on Clark: Very serious young man. Takes in everything you say. Takes his job very seriously. Say something, he writes it down.

Trgo on Packers rookie Kenny Clark: "He's a very serious young man. When you're talking to him, he's always looking you in the eye."

DL coach Mike Trgovac on first-round pick Kenny Clark: He's very serious about his craft...I like what I've seen out of him so far.

 Darren Perry

Darren Perry on Hyde: Very versatile guy. He’s smart. There’s no worries when he’s on the field. He’s like a starter for us.

Safeties coach Darren Perry said he expected Morgan Burnett to play Friday but "things happen." Burnett missed practice with a back issue.

S coach Darren Perry says Morgan Burnett's back injury doesn't limit his transition to part-time linebacker.

Perry on young safeties: Smartest group since I’ve been here. All can run. We saw some good things from all those guys.

Perry on Brice dropped INT vs. Rodgers: Can’t miss out on those opportunities. But he can catch the football. I’m not worried about him.

Perry on HHCD: I think if preference he’d like to roam the field. Buthe’d relish opportunity to cover Gronkowski and guys like that.

Darren Perry on Ha Ha Clinton-Dix: "In a crunch situation, I'll take him matched up against any tight end in the league."

Joe Whitt

Joe Whitt on CBs: We have to play better all the way around. Made some plays, but not consistently enough. Numbers good but good rush.

Whitt on CBs; We’re going to rotate. Have to make sure everyone has comfort level at each spot and with each other.

Whitt calls Hyde "rare" because of his versatility. Safety, nickel, dime and even at corner.

CB coach Joe Whitt says Micah Hyde is "hybrid" player, only one who can play each spot in secondary: "He's rare. He's very smart."

Joe Whitt Jr. on Micah Hyde: "I think he's one of our best 11 players (on defense)." Likes to see him on the field as much as possible.

Whitt on young #Packers CB group (other than Sam Shields): "I have one guy who has proven himself. Everybody else needs to come on."

Whitt spews honesty about #Packers cornerbacks: "We haven't played winning football in this league when we go against winning teams."

Whitt has 10 bodies in his CBs room. Needs some of those to step up. Great answer at a position that is all youth beyond Shields.

Whitt says #Packers corners will be moved around: "In different games, different people are going to be in different positions."

CB coach Joe Whitt on the rotation at nickel "star" cornerback: "That will be throughout the season. Based on matchups each week"

Scott McCurley

McCurley on ILBs: After one game, I like the way they competed in game. Top to bottom took challenge and competed hard. They know #s game.

McCurley on Bradford: Lost weight, changed routine, change habits. He knows what he’s doing, ability to play fast. Seen at times before.

Scott McCurley said Carl Bradford "put it together snap after snap" in the game against the Browns. "He made those plays across the board."

Bradford finally taking step, McCurley says. He's made a bunch of plays previous two camps. Just not the consistency to play on Sundays.

McCurley likes what he saw out of Martinez on Friday. Just wishes he would have played more than 11 snaps.

Glad the light is starting to come on with Bradford. It was so disappointing seeing a guy that big and talented to not be effective enough to even make the roster. If he puts it together upstairs then he could be a starter because physically he's a beast and his effort is outstanding.

Hyde is a conundrum. He's smart, instinctive and versatile, but he's also slow. On his interception against Cleveland, for example, if Barnidge turns his head he likely catches that mostly in-stride, but Hyde had to dive because he was behind Barnidge. He defintely took advantage of Cleveland's mistake, but against a competent play he likely didn't have the speed/athleticism to even break it up.

Welp. This may be why MM is in no rush to play Rodgers in the pre-season:

Rob Demovsky ESPN Staff Writer

Aaron Rodgers might be having his best practice of the summer, and that's saying something. Two impressive TD throws in a matter of minutes just now. One rolling to his left and throwing across the field to running back Brandon Burks in the back of the end zone and then a bullet to tight end Mitchell Henry down the seam.

ESPN Staff Writer

Who says Aaron Rodgers needs preseason games? He just perfectly placed a deep corner route for Ed Williams to make an over-the-shoulder grab against cornerback Sam Shields.

That's how I saw it as well.   Hyde was trailing and if the TE turns his head and sees the pass coming, that was a TD.

Good for Hyde for taking advantage of the mistake, but please don't try to sell me on that being some spectacular play.   If he cut in front and made the pick, now that's a play to applaud.

It's really easy to play football from the couch.
