A lot of mocks have the UTSA edge guy going to GB. Pass rush is huge, but is he more of a combine guy or did he actually produce?

Watched a bit of the ESPN mock draft last night and caught Rob Demovsky reading off the Packers projected pick at 14, Marcus Davenport.  Bill Polian, who I trust as a great judge of talent, was really high on Davenport.  The comparison was to Ziggy Ansah, but with a higher ceiling.

I hear you Boris, this draft really is important.  Not just the 1st pick but the fact that they pick in the upper half of just about every round, plus they have a fairly high supplemental pick, they really need to have a great draft to replenish the talent on the team overall.  We all saw what this team was like without Rodgers, it was a team only slightly better than the Cleveland Browns.

7-9 is more than slightly better than the Cleveland Browns but I take your point.  It was well below Packer standards.

We are approximately 27 hours from when GB exercises the 14th pick ( or 26 hours if GB gets a sweetheart deal from Oakland  and moves to 10; but like most of you I am praying for impact players this year- no too small Jamals and no disrespect to the analytics' of the draft I don't want any Mike Mamulas here either:  Thompson can pick any position so long as this player has production, likes to play football and has some football IQ.  One more brilliant athlete who has to get a peewee primer about football is not for me.  Now am I praying that a great corner, pass rusher, or LB is the 1st one.  I am just praying about 8 really good football players are heading to the rookie orientation and not a 3 time assist champion from College Basketball!

I really hope it's not Davenport.    Did anyone know that San Antonio had a college with a football program prior to this years draft?     I don't doubt he is physically gifted, but at 14 I want a kid who has played, and succeeded, against elite talent.

Same goes for Vander Esch, AKA, Frakrell 2.0.

Save your keystrokes, I realize there are exceptions, but I don't think either of these kids are the exception.    At 14, get a guy who has done it against elite talent in big games.   If he isn't there, move down and then take your project because their are lots of projects in rounds 2 and beyond to be had.

A more accurate comparison for Vander Esch is Shea McClellin, also out of Boise. Of concern is the fact he goes from 175lbs walk-on to 246lbs MWC DPOY. There have long been rumors about how he added 71lbs of muscle and a mean streak.

Pass.

I'm not going to say I know a ton about Vander Esch as I am going on simply what I read, but I get the feeling Vander Esch played a lot more inside than McClellin did.  It looked like his tackle numbers were much better, but didn't have the sack numbers McClellin did.

Who knows, maybe the rumors about him having neck issues are true and maybe he'll slide down draft boards because of it.  If someone really likes him, they'll double and triple check all that stuff and make a decision on him.

Pettine likes to create pressure with blitzes, resulting in a lot of man coverage. ....

Got me thinking about Josh Jackson. Was reading somewhere that 6 of Jacksonโ€™s 8 interceptions came in zone coverage. Iowa plays a lot of zone. Doesn't sound like he has much experience in press man, isn't well suited to cover sudden/shifty receivers (slot), and of course doesn't have long speed either. Obviously has a nice skill set, but probably best suited to go to a team that plays a lot of quarters or 2 deep. In other words his coaches need to put him in position to win....who knows maybe Pettine thinks he can do that.

Thatโ€™s because youโ€™re a ding dong.

Although I do agree about Vander Esch.  Davenport dominated at the Senior Bowl because he knows how to self correct and the only motivation he needs comes from himself

Iโ€™ll take those traits even on an average LB.

Are you suggesting that BrainDed and I aren't the smartest dudes in the room?

I agree. I like Davenport just fine, but Iโ€™m worried about a project. I donโ€™t trust Winston Moss to teach him what he needs to know and help him unlock his talent. I donโ€™t think Vander Esch is the right guy to pair with Martinez, Iโ€™m sure he will end up being a fine LB though. Theyโ€™re too similar in terms of what they bring to the defense, we need a missile like Rahsaan Evans to pair with Mart, who (like LVE) is an inside grinder.

Fitzpatrick or trade down unless thereโ€™s an unlikely event like a top player like Ward, Nelson, or Chubb falls.

A good friend of mine emailed the other day and he knows exactly what the Pack will do tomorrow.  He knows his stuff and you can take this to the bank:

It suddenly entered my mind, like a spirit whispered it or something.
The Packers will either trade up, stay put or trade down in the draft this week.

I really think this will happen, too.

There is always the possibility that they are late getting the pick to the podium and another teams jumps in front of them.

Wait.

No.

That kind spectacular incompetence only happens in dime store novels and B-movies.
