It happens, Henry.   It's part of why we frequently sent Jones out to the Split End position.  Hoping to catch the defense in a call that puts a LB in a spot they clearly shouldn't be in.

Except it was anything but covering a RB in motion.  I can recall a few times where he was straight up CB coverage on a WR.  It was so dumbfounding it's hard to forget it.

Wasn't trying to dunk on you, my bad if it came across that way.    I get frustrated reading that defense, that he would have had a season more like 19 if he was used properly, of P all over the internet and ASSumed this was your argument as well.

I’m just busting your chops a little because you came fast with all the citations. I don’t think coverage was a problem from him, actually don’t think he was that bad in coverage honestly. My point was just that I think Pettine’s scheme was too passive and that is best exemplified by sending a high $$$ pass rusher out in coverage. I think MLF wants an aggressive scheme like Tampa and that means less gimmicky big man coverages and more going for broke.

For anyone who may have missed this, Gute isn't ruling out the tag:

I would feel bad for Aaron Jones if we tagged him.

It’s entirely possible that there will be some decent veteran players available starting next week.   Even more reason if you are JJ Watt to take as much money as you can when you can because you aren’t bidding against other players.

As for Preston Smith, I have to believe his deal has to be reworked if they retain him for 2021.  If he’s making 16MM this season they should get rid of Gute immediately.

It’s a function of the cap being reduced.  The question is by how much?  Has the actual number been reported? I know the floor is 180MM.  What’s the top end?   If it’s close to the 180 number there will be a ton of bloodletting.

Former 1st rounder and pro bowler. I think a lot of experienced starters/players are going to be available on the cheap;

The Detroit Lions have told cornerback Desmond Trufant that he will be released at the start of the league year, which begins on March 17, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Trufant signed a two-year, $20 million deal with the Lions before the 2020 season to be the team's replacement for Darius Slay, who was traded to Philadelphia. Detroit still owes Trufant $3.5 million in guaranteed money for 2021.

It never quite worked out for Trufant, who was the Week 1 starter, as he spent most of the season with hamstring issues that limited him to 6 games, 1 interception and 4 passes defended. He also ended up in a playing-time battle with rookie first-round pick Jeff Okudah and second-year pro Amani Oruwariye for outside spots. Trufant's role as a No. 1 corner was in question for the 2021 season

I’ll be interested to see how these supposed bargain contracts are setup.  Even for teams with a lot of cap I bet players will go for shorter contracts if they feel they’re getting squeezed this year.  Could be a good thing for next year.

I think we'll see a whole lot of one year prove it deals this offseason.  Teams aren't going to want to shell out big contracts this season with both the lower cap and the uncertainty of fans in stadiums next season (coupled with lost revenue from last season).

And with the amount of veterans expected to be cut in the next few weeks, could result in a lot of affordable options for the Packers to make a run at a Super Bowl this year.

Supposedly Preston Smith is on the trade block. I saw a suggestion of dealing him to NE for Stephon Gilmore, which I guess might be okay with the right package. Gilmore had an inconsistent 2020 season and is on the rong side of 30, but it would save GB ~$1M on the cap and he’s only 2 years removed from being the DPOY. Preston had an up and down 2020, but is still under 30 with good football in front of him. Hard to say who is getting more, but I wouldn’t give up a pick + Preston, it either needs to be even swap or Gilmore + pick.

Cowboys are giving Dak Prescott a four-year, $160 million deal, including a record $126 million guaranteed, source tells ESPN. The first three years average $42 million per year.

$75M in year one. I mean, Dak is a nice QB and all, but good god.

So if my math is correct, it’s a $25.5 million cap hit for this season.  That saves the Cowboys about $8-9 million in cap space from the franchise number.

Not certain where Dak fits in the hierarchy of QBs.  And his injury creates an unknown moving forward.  But I think the Cowboys almost had to sign him.  And he’s good enough to get them in the playoffs, maybe farther.  But those next couple of seasons might cripple the team a bit, salary-wise.  Of course, it could also mean Jerruh has some insider info on the next TV deal with regard to the cap.

Jerruh just wants the Cowboys, in any conversation, right now. He may be Heisenberg's biggest customer. Not a skank, so he says.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, wide receiver Devin Funchess has agreed to a pay cut of roughly $750,000 to remain with the Packers. He signed a one-year deal worth $1.2 million in base salary last April. But Funchess decided to opt out in late July, posting on Instagram at the time, “Family is first.”

Funchess last played for the Colts in 2019, when he played one game and caught three passes for 32 yards before suffering a broken collarbone. Though Funchess was designated to return that year, he never came off IR and missed the rest of the season.

A former Panthers second-round pick, Funchess spent his first four seasons with Carolina. He caught 161 passes for 2,233 yards with 21 touchdowns in 61 games with the franchise.

He’s got the QB Whisperer now.  Dak will be the next Aaron Rod . . ., never mind.

One thing is for sure, Jerruh has guaranteed Cowboy fans, they will never, ever get a sniff of the Lombardi trophy for the next 4 years.

Why is the assumption Preston needs to leave to get cap relief? They could extend him 2 more years and spread out the cost even further. A trio of good pass rushers is better than a duo. Just an idea.

It’s the sheer number that makes him an attractive candidate to cut.  They pick up 8MM instantly by doing so, and it’s not like he had a great season in 2020.  Still, you could get creative with him and either restructure or trade him to free up more space in 2021.

Trying to trade him would seem to signal that if they can’t make a deal that they intend to release him.

Again if you think Preston is someone you want to keep then tack on two years, convert a ton of cap this year to signing bonus and spread it all out over 4 years. You could create way more than $8M if he’s willing to take a deal like that.

Looks like it's the other Smith that would bring GB under the Cap:
