I think we're about to get some Thorny-esque name dropping.
Today a lot of my close friends here and such thought FOR SURE we were going to sign Corey Davis and while I wanted that to happen I’m not even really disappointed because I knew Gute wasn’t going to do it. That ship sailed yesterday along with no extension in sight with AR12.
So “Today” I believe that was the missed opportunity. The move would of done so much and really changed the complexion of things IMO. I live in the world of “Probabilities” and that move really would of moved the needle in that realm in our favor.
so while I’m not saying “I’m Never Wrong” I am saying I disagree with Gute not aggressively making that happen. Davis’s new deal wasn’t even outrageous or anything. So by me saying I disagree with what Gute did or didn’t do and then some of you guys wanting to turn that into “I Think I’m The God Of Football” then that’s what your gonna do!
I would have been absolutely against the AJ signing if Dillon had more than one really impressive game. I assume he didn't get more playing time because of what the coaches saw in practice. My guess is pass blocking and or route running. But what do I know? If you are at the doorstep of the Super Bowl, it's tough to let one of your best playmakers walk even if it flies in the face of the idea that big money contracts to RBs is a poor business practice.
When it comes to front office decisions, it's a lot like religion. None of us really know the answers but we create a narrative that fits our logic and allows us to sleep better.
I agree that some of what has transpired over the past 10 years has been frustrating from a fan standpoint. However, this is a great franchise and we're lucky to call it ours. Like all fans of any NFL team, I wished we had won more Super Bowls, but we've been and still are closer to that than most other franchises.

3 years, $37.5 Million - Corey Davis - 65 catches for 984 yards and five touchdowns last season. A career high for him. Basically Lazard numbers avg'd out over 16 games. Not sure on your definition of "outrageous" but that contract is WAYYYY too much for Corey Davis. Pass
Sorry, I want something a little better than that & while Golladay has been hurt a lot, he's the guy I would like to see the Packers sign. Golladay opposite Adams with Lazard & MVP. No defense in the league can defend that. Golladay & MVP are 2 legit homerun threats on EVERY SINGLE PLAY.

Packers Brass doing what they always do... dip the toe, but not jumping into the water. The WR free agent market is simply more than they’re willing to pay- and they just shot their load on Jones.
I don’t think they’re going to pay 8 figures for anyone. That’s what any of these proven guys are going to command. It’s a waste of time talking about it...

Dillon had three things working against him. First, he was behind 2 quality NFL backs, 1 who is a top 10 back and another who is one of the better backups in the league. Second, there was no pre-season so Dillon had to figure out how to run and pass block against NFL defenses on the fly. Third, he had a bad case of Covid.
Heck mid-season I was starting to have my doubts about Dillon as he wasn't too impressive in the few chances he did play. That said, you could see shortly after he came back from Covid he was starting to figure things out and of course had the fantastic game vs. the Titans. I think he's got a chance to be an upgrade over Williams as a pure runner, he didn't look too bad in terms of catching the ball either so he might be close to Williams in his impact on the passing game too.

Golladay is going to get huge money from some team. I doubt the Packers are in the running for him. Fuller is too unpredictable and I think Samuel will get paid as he’s only 24.
TJ Hilton and Marvin Jones seem like more logical choices if the Packers choose to go after a WR. Personally, I’d rather they use that money for a DE or DB or LB. I assume they will draft a corner high and DL isn’t exactly deep this year in terms of quality so maybe they go after Clowney on a short term deal? Or Derek Wolfe or Lawrence Guy or Kawann Short.
Never quite figured out why they cut Lawrence Guy. I thought he was a decent developmental/rotation guy.
Exactly. He’s also not going to cost them a fortune. Could play DE or DT in this scheme. He’s been a solid player for the Patriots and has been healthy most of his career.
My guess is that they could sign him for less than half what AZ gave JJ Watt.
I do think GB needs to add one more solid DE/DL because it’s likely they go after a LB or corner early in the draft.
Didn’t he have some off field or mental health issues or something at ASU that caused him to declare early? Or something with coaches? He was REALLY good at ASU, something caused him to sink in the draft. I assumed the same issues are why he didn’t stick in GB, but maybe he matured in NE or wherever he went next.
He's dyslexic as I remember. I think he got the rap he couldn't learn.
Maybe I’m thinking of another player (Burfict maybe?). If dyslexia was the only issue, sounds like it was a coaching issue that got solved with another team. Maybe he couldn’t decipher Dom’s scheme.
Yeah, Burfict is a walking POS since college.

I don't think anyone figured out The Wizard's country club scheme. The thing that got me is he played pretty well in pre-season and the snaps he got. I was puzzled when they cut him loose.

AJ Hawk deciphered it immediately. I think that's why they retained him, he was the only one who could explain it to the rest of the defense.

Yeah. He was opposite AJ Brown and yeah Lazard was opposite Adams but Rodgers is certainly greater then Tannehill. I think it’s more about projecting what a player can be or can do in your offense and what that player brings to your system. That’s what the great Minds such as a Bill Belichick are able to do. Davis is fully developed and ready to go as an ascending player. 12 mill per year for No.2 receiver and possible no.1 isn’t outrageous at all. Now if that number would of pushed to the 14’s and 15’s which I anticipated then I would agree that you’d have to pass. But looking at his new deal it’s obvious Gute did is infamous CALL & LOW BALL on this one which is just a giant waste of time and creates massive false hope with many Packer Fans.
Davis’s advanced metrics speak for themselves and aren’t even on the same grade scale as Lazard either. Lazard isn’t even close to anything on the open market that Davis is! Give me a break!

Simple Math with other things not happening that I’ve thoroughly discussed can draw the conclusion pretty easy that the Packers weren’t even a serious player in even signing him.
Some of this stuff is 1 + 1 = 2. It’s not that complicated.
The Titans thought so highly of Davis that they basically let him walk without any kind of a fight. Yet we should bitch and moan the Packers didn’t break the bank for him?
For 12MM a year, it’s possible GB could add a DE and a backup corner. Hell, that’s more than Aaron Jones and does anyone on this planet think Davis is worth as much as AJ?
Nope. Not today, not tomorrow, not next week, and not when the season starts.

Corey Davis never actually ran the 40 during draft prep (he was injured), but scouts estimated he'd be somewhere in the 4.50 range. He's 6'3" and about 210 pounds. He was a great college receiver at Western Michigan and caught 52 TDs during his college career. He went #5 overall and over the last 2 years he's averaged about 55 catches, ~800 yards, and 3.5 TDs per year.
Allen Lazard ran a 4.55 40 during the combine and is 6'5" and 230 pounds. He was a great college receiver at Iowa State and caught 26 TDs in his career. Last year, he had a freak injury but if he'd have played a full year, he'd have put up numbers of about 60 catches, 900 yards, and 6 TDs.
Lazard is one of the better blocking WRs in football. He's bigger than Davis, not that much slower than Davis, and was a very productive WR in college in a better conference than Davis. Davis might have more fluidity in running routes, but I would guess Lazard is as good a route runner from a technical perspective. Lazard has some of the best hands on the team.
The Jets just have Davis 27 million guaranteed and 12 million a year. The Packers will have Lazard under contract for 2021 at 800K.
Is there really that much difference between Davis and Lazard? Certainly nowhere near enough to justify signing Davis to essentially replace Lazard's snaps at 15X the annual salary.

Sorry Boris. I didn't see your earlier post when I posted my own with the same conclusion about Davis/Lazard.
If nothing else, these rumors are entertaining...
#Packers interest would be tied to missing out on Will Fuller or another top WR target, which is unlikely, but the team is certainly equipped with fall-back options to pair with Adams https://t.co/uKG0UCUg0Q

Packers fans: to update my previous report, it looks like one of the big 3 or 4 names atop the list of UFA WRs s landing in GB, just a matter of time. If I had to guess I’d say Fuller from what I’m hearing, but they need to move some money around first

We can side by side tons of guys on measurable’s which doesn’t mean much. According to the Advanced Metrics and the Tape they aren’t even close.
Corey Davis PFF = 86.9
Allen Lazard PFF = 71.7
One guy had Ryan Tannehill and the other had Aaron Rodgers. Davis is being extremely undervalued here by his 2020 tape as well. When you look at his ability to make “Contested Catches” and “Play off Contact” there is simply no comparison. Davis can also blow by safeties so while 40 times are great what he does on tape means more. Davis would give us that No.2 we would of so desperately needed!
So to answer your question on worth. If he was the “Missing Piece” to get Adams in 1 on 1 coverage and GET US OVER THE HUMP against teams like Tampa would it be worth it?
I believe he would of so to me it was a SLAM DUNK “YES”!
PFF isn’t always spot on when ranking or comparing players and their performance. But hey, don’t let that get in the way of trying to defend a silly argument.
To me, this isn’t so much about Davis v Lazard, it’s more about the Packers needing to use their FA dollars wisely to address other areas of need based on priority.
There is no way you can debate CB, DE, and ILB aren’t greater positions of need than WR. Could they upgrade WR? Sure. But they are not going to spend 12MM a year for a Corey Davis. Not when they have to extend Davante Adams and Jaire Alexander. Signing Davis to that type of contract would be irresponsible and would guarantee they would need to cut in other areas that open more holes.
Get them over the hump beating Tampa? JFC. You are assuming that Tampa will be back. That’s not certain. The Niners didn’t make it back, yet everyone freaked out about how GB was playing for 2nd place in the NFC.

Yeah, i get it! PFF is right when it gives one of our favorite players a good rating but wrong when it proves our GM is a fucking a dumb ass!!
They could of easily got Davis. They chose to overpay the RB the position and keep the transition process going with Jordan Love open and not give Rodgers the extension freeing up more $. Everyone knows we need a better option then Lazard.
That’s what’s going on here. Lets call it what it is!
my thoughts would be cb should be the target. we made our splash, we re-signed jones and kept the core intact. this is a good cb draft from what you draft people are saying so that is good. after cb, i would say OL is next...wr is way down the list for me.
