Reports are Rodgers wants a longer term commitment.

And this is so weird to me - either commit to me now or I'm leaving.  So you like Green Bay enough to be here long term, but if I'm not here long term then I hate it and want out ASAP?  This makes sense for a young player looking to get paid, but is unusual for a player in his late 30's.  If this is true, it's all about the money.  And if it is, it's time to move on.

Rodgers is delusional if he thinks he can replicate what Brady has done.  No one other than TB12 has been able to do what he’s done.

For starters, it would require Rodgers to take 25% less in market value which he has not shown any willingness to do.  Brady has made a lot of personal sacrifices and trade offs to win all of those titles including taking a backseat to BB in terms of attention.

Kind of maybe.  Did you sorta shoulda do your job as a GM?

Long venting post.

Rodgers has stated several times that he wanted to try to play until he was 40. That's at least until the end of 2023 which is three more years. It's obvious that the Packers structured his contract to be able to move on after 2021 and then drafted his replacement to do just that after Rodgers was very clear about what he wanted his timeline to be.

Rodgers looks like a diva now, but we won't be able to know how much of this is him being unreasonable until we know more about what this "extension" was that he supposedly turned down from the Packers.

Up until this week, I give Rodgers a lot of credit for how he handled the situation. He could have been a malcontent all of last season seeing the writing on the wall with Jordan Love. Instead, he shut his mouth, bought into the system and MLF, and put together one of the best seasons by a QB in NFL history.

I would guess the conversation after the season this year was something like Rodgers saying "OK, I did everything you wanted me to do, didn't complain after your off-season moves showed you thought I was declining, and now I've shown you I still have it. Now I want you to structure my contract so that you can't cut me until after 2023." If that's the case and the Packers still won't budge, that's their right, but I don't see it that Rodgers is being unreasonable.

If Rodgers really just wants out of Green Bay because he wants to finish his career closer to home and in warmer weather near his fiance, that would suck but it's not like he would be the first professional athlete to do that.

Two final comments.

1. As others have said, if Jordan Love turns out to be an All-Pro all of this will be written up as fairly positive stories by ESPN in 15 years and they'll be pictures with Favre, Rodgers, and Love with their arms around each other we will be hanging on our den walls. If JLove ends up as a bust, this will be considered as one of the biggest management screwups in NFL history (to move on from a guy who just won the MVP).

2. What would it take for Mark Murphy to get fired? If FLPacker's comments yesterday were true that Lombardi is on record as saying Murphy is calling all the shots and thinks he's the smartest guy in the room, then he needs to go yesterday. This is the same guy that tried to give Favre 25 million to stay retired in 2008 which was an unbelievable PR disaster back then (we don't want you back but we're scared you'll go somewhere else and make us look like fools so here's some hush money to go away quietly). Everyone eventually forgot about because Rodgers became a superstar. I can't believe MLF is happy about any of this and, of course, he would want his MVP QB back and fully invested and this makes things exponentially more difficult for JLove to succeed. The way the process played out also removed any leverage Gutey had to get the best deal possible.  If the decision is to move on, you put Rodgers up for auction and get the Rams and Niners (and whoever else) to bid against each other. Given what they gave up for Stafford, this could have been an all-time haul on the Herschel Walker level.

My gut says we've seen the last of #12 in Green and Gold. If Gunt doesn't trade him, and he's already drawn a line in the sand, he will sit out till they do.

Gunt will look like a fucking moron if 12 sits out. Yeah, 12 will look bad too, but as long as he can win you games, he will be revered.

I had a friend who was dating this absolute psycho hose beast. She was convinced he was cheating on her with some hood rat. He says he wasn't, I don't care, it isn't pertinent.

So one day he comes home from work, and the GF has moved out, taken all her shit, and spray painted on the garage door in big black letters "DAVE GROSS LOVES SECTION 8 PUSSY"

I see this and ask him "hey, do you need me to help you paint over it?"

He responds "fuck no! I'm leaving it up for everyone to see what a psycho she is!"

And there it remained for 6 months until someone complained.

In this instance, 12 is the ex GF, and Gunt is Dave Gross.

Call me crazy, but I think Tommy Terriffic's defense has played a much bigger role in his success than any "sacrifice" he's made. Anybody that thinks Tom Brady has gone without for the good of the team....LOL.

Imagine where Aaron Rodgers would be as far as chips goes if his defense played lights out like Brady's have.

Last Super Bowl, against the new "greatest quarterback to ever play" Patrick Mahomes and the Chefs....9 points. 3 field goals surrendered by the Bucs' D.

The previous Super Bowl, two years earlier? The Pats D gave up 3 points to the Rams.

But yeah, it's Brady's sacrifices that have made all the difference. What a fucking Saint he is.

Now you-all can blast me, I really dont give a shit!!!

TRADE HIS ASS!!!  He is a primadona evidenced by the fact that he has no contact with his own family!!!!

Stop with the β€œno contact with his family” stuff.

His family is very conservative evangelical and lines up with the former president.   Rodgers has a much different world view and has engaged with ideas that are an anathema to his family. This country is very polarized around politics and religion and many families are struggling to deal with divisive political opinions within their own families.  That familial struggle is not a character flaw and has no bearing on this discussion!

@Henry posted:

I agree with Henry. Tom Brady was allowed to have his own personal trainer hang around the locker room in New England. He went over BB's head to get Kraft to trade Garappolo at MIDSEASON because he was thought BB was getting ready to transition to Jimmy G. Finally, his wife is worth at least 400 million dollars. It's easy to decide to play for "only" 25 million a year when your salary is play money. One could argue that Brady should sign a vet minimum deal and really keep Tampa Bay's options open. Instead, the Bucs are on the hook for 50 million and 40 million of dead cap space in 2021 and 2022 if Brady suddenly declines (he is 43 years old).

Completely different personality styles and ego's as well. And yes, that makes a substantial difference.

The bottom line, Rodgers is still being paid well for the current contract he's in. He just got a 6.5 million dollar roster bonus in March and is still among the top 5 QB's in terms of pay. I am with the others in that I do not know what else he expects GB to do. He just signed this extension less then 2 years ago and the Packers haven't taken one red cent away from him.  Yes, I get they drafted Love and I get he's not happy about it. But Love isn't taking away his starting gig nor any money from him anytime soon.

If every player who lived up to his contract wanted it tore up and re-done, teams would be redoing deals every damn year.  That's not how this is supposed to work.

There is a reason that Rodgers is estranged from his immediate family. There is a reason he has struggled with personal relationships with women he's dated. There is a reason he holds grudges to a point where he literally remembers the exact time discussions took place, what that person was wearing, and word-for-word what they said and did.

That's not how most people are wired. And while I fully acknowledge that Gute fucked this up from a PR standpoint with Rodgers, he's not dealing with a "normal" personality either. AR's an odd duck. He requires ego massaging unlike any other.

But this is also a business and the Packers have every right to conduct themselves that way.

Fuck the "I am an Aaron Rodgers fan first" mindset. It was stupid when Favre ball washers said it then. The same applies now.

I think Rodgers should get to do whatever he wants. I plan on doing the same and I have serious doubts I will even be a sports fan in 5 years time. Supporting crybaby millionaires? Not my cup of tea.

I remember how I used to be into the draft so much I used to record it and re-watch it. Last night it occurred to me. The draft is really fucking boring.

Ted was not a good ego massager...that is what he had Andrew Brandt for.

I get the impression Gunt is more like Ted than Brandt.

And the only thing Russ Balls is massaging is his half-chub at the thought of saving money.

Could not agree more.

Whenever Rodgers is acting out of line and his conduct or decisions are detrimental to the team, he needs to be called out on it.

There was too much adulation and reflexive defensiveness among the faithful when folks first started calling out Favre and I don't foresee that mistake being repeated.

Now, with regard to the in "Gutey I trust" (or whomever is in charge of the Packers at the moment) crowd, fuck that as well.

That mindset, so prevalent among the management bootlickers crowd, helped permit Dom, Mike, and Ted to remain in their jobs long after their respective sell by dates.

Only those with blinders on refuse to accept that Gutey made a decision last year to move on from Rodgers before his contract was set to expire by using his 2020 1st and 4th round picks to select Jordan Love -- the only question is whether Gutey planned for that QB transition to occur in 2021 or more likely 2022.

Now that Rodgers has responded to the Love selection by (A) having an MVP season and (B) not playing nice with Gutey, the ball is fully in Gutey's court.

I expect Gutey and the front office will force Rodgers to play in Green Bay in 2021 and then move on, hopefully getting a boatload of premium picks in return.

Then, and only then, will Packer fans be able to really find out if Gutey's momentous 2020 decision to move on from Rodgers was the correct one.

Honestly, if Rodgers is that insecure about losing his job to Love then he’s got some major mental problems.  It’s not like they gave up their next 3 years of draft picks to get Love, and I don’t see any scenario where he gets beat out by Love in the near future.

If he’s suggesting the Packers haven’t done enough that’s difficult to understand as well.   He basically got MM shitcanned.  Gute went out and spent huge money on Amos and the Smiths and they resigned Bak and Jones (among others).   He’s been well taken care of financially.

Sometimes things just don’t work out the way you want them to.   But to publicly bash and call out the Packers organization and essentially quit on the team is an extreme position to take even for someone as thin skinned as he is.  I mean, what’s the upside?

While people are getting all huffy and puffy, let us remember offense wasn't the problem last year...it was the masterpiece of a D that Pettine Kitty and Gurt built. Yeah, it has some great pieces, but it wasn't nearly good enough. The offense did most of the heavy lifting all season long.

Where do people think we'd be if Goff was our QB instead of 12, with the same Pettine D?

12 is the key piece.

I think AR wants respect for his play and career, and sees a bunch of guys still making more than him, which pisses him off. I'm sure he thinks he deserves more than Dak, etc. Don't believe that is all that unique here.

I think the unique thing here is that everyone , including AR, knows that his current contract is structured such that 2021-22 will be his last season in GB, barring an extension - not a restructure to simply save GB cap room, an extension. Knowing that GB would almost certainly try to get value in return via trade vs simply cutting him next off season, I'd think he wants to have some say in where he goes if/when he leaves GB. Especially seeing Favre shipped off to a shitty Jets team.

Heading in to 2020, where AR was coming off a few sub par for him years, this made perfect sense for GB. He didn't look like 2014 AR, and they needed to plan for 2022 and beyond. Regardless of my opinion of Jordan Love, it made sense to move up and draft what you think is the heir apparent, play two more years with AR, and then move on after getting what you can via trade. After 2020 season though where with new staff/coach things clicked and he looked better than ever, GB management should have said "Oh shit, Jordan Love or not, we need to pivot here, let's get him an extension and commit to him for 3+ more year". Seemingly they didn't do that. Or at least not close enough to it to placate AR.

I'd imagine ARs' thought is - "I could have thrown a tantrum last year, but I played the good soldier, I said the right things. Oh, and then I went out and had my best year ever arguably. Commit to me now for more than a year or I will throw a tantrum."

In a league where you have a QB and a shot to win it all or you don't have a QB and you're meaningless, as a Packers fan first, I would choose sticking with the QB that has proven he's one of the best ever as long as humanly possible. Especially in an era where the top guys are playing insanely great well into their 40's. There's no reason AR couldn't play 5-6 more years at a high level, barring injury. As a Packer fan first, I'd want to have every one of those years happen here vs Denver or SF or wherever.

Exactly...

Bert was absolutely done as a Packer when they moved on. He showed in the NFCC vs the Giants that Bert was always gonna Bert...much to McVince's frustration.

12 has done everything MLF has asked him to do in these new scheme. Until yesterday, he has handled himself well. Bert played his games for 5+ years.

Two NFCC games in a row, and and MVP...Gurt should be doing everything including licking his taint to keep him happy. But at this point, Gunt probably realizes if Nub doesn't strike oil, his career as a senior NFL exec is over, and he's back to humpin' pavement as a scout. So he's not gonna risk looking like an idiot. He's sticking to his guns.

I agree on your thought about what the thought process was for the Packers and Rodgers play before 2020.  For him the proceeding years he was not what he had been and they had to have been thinking the dude is 36 and we have to plan for the future.  This is not all that unusual in the NFL and especially in GB.  The Packers to me seem to be one of those teams who plan for down the road.  They may not always make the right call (no one does 100% of the time?) but they have the guts to do it.  Also, didn't Gute give an interview prior to the draft and said that if there is a QB they want they wouldn't hesitate to take one early on.  So no one including #12 should be surprised it happened.

Now I do agree with #12 if he is insulted that he isn't making more money than the Dak Prescott's of the world.  I have always found it brutal that a guy like Rodgers gets his pay day and someone who is good but not great gets paid like that it has to sting.  And with that in mind I totally get it if he was/is pissed off.  But at the same time he has to understand by now the business side of it and the limitations of the cap.   I am not necessarily siding with the front office I am sure they are guilty as well and I cannot wait for the story to come out on what was really offered (if it really was).

My one thing I am starting to feel is that I wonder how much of a D'bag Murphy is behind the scenes? I have nothing to base it upon but I am not totally sold on his leadership.  One thing to keep in mind with Murphy is that he is 65 almost 66 so I wonder how long he will be around?

It was pointed out that when Rodgers signed his latest deal, his 56 million dollar sign-on bonus STILL ranks 3rd all-time as highest ever.

And the bottom line, no matter what contract is signed, it’s simply a matter of time before another player will sign for higher money. It’s the reality of the NFL

As others have pointed out, beyond money, Aaron has basically gotten all of his wishes dealt to him. MM is gone. TT was β€œtransitioned β€œ. A new GM was hired who actually uses free agency and signed a slew of players to help the team and spent a boat load while doing so. They hired what seems to be an offensive innovator and a young HC who built an offense that’s extremely QB friendly. So much so that Rodgers experienced a year with the least amount of sacks he’s ever had in a calendar year. They re signed his marque LT and his franchise Pro Bowl RB. They brought back nearly the entire NFCC game team.

He’s still being paid as a top 5 NFL player. Only Tampa Bay stands in the way realistically of getting him to another SB. After these 2 teams, it’s a serious drop off. That’s the reality. I do not know what else Aaron wants. I too want him around as long as possible. But for fuck sakes, a ton has been done in order to appease him. That Jordan Love is some thorn in his side simply doesn’t add up. Except that it hurt his fragile ego.

If Murphy is making the calls then Gunt is no better than a sorta shoulda yes man.  This is exactly the shit we all feared when Murphy changed up the structure.

I'm certain this is almost all due the lack of Packers committing to him for more than a year especially after an MVP season.

I completely agree.

We watch because sport is entertaining, cathartic and nostalgic.  Modern sports "business" is galling at times.

There's an element of "going all in" that speaks to it.  Just do whatever annoying shit with annoying characters to enjoy the game as it is and get a championship.

Anyone who says they watch sports just to see certain athletes are full of shit.

We could go much deeper into the whole societal mirror of this but it's just not worth the ugliness we'd see anyways.

I've just come to accept, if not give in to, the sports business for what it is at this point.  You still believe in these silly things like respect, integrity, humility and the very spirit of sport.

This "sports business" is also the reason I enjoy women's college softball.  They have no payday other than winning for winning's sake.

Employers suck! Including the Packers. One of the things I remember most about Bart Starr is that he was fired by the Packers the week before Christmas in 1983....They dogged him. Starr got over it and came back, You could say that Favre has kind of done that too, but for Rodgers--like Favre, to think that employers are going to treat you like the second coming is just naive. You can vote with your feet and he is kind of doing that, but if you think Denver or Las Vegas are going to treat you better than Green Bay than you really are  too  full of B.S. and if your goal is to screw all of us over to make a point than you are really too  full of your self.
