Spriggs is far too athletic to simply give up on him. Needs more snaps/reps and work on footwork.

Remember it took Tretter a while to really come around as well. Athletic, but it took him a bit to figure it all out and he never was able to be a consistent starter. Maybe, hopefully, Spriggs is the same.

There's a good chance Tim Hightower will be cut by the Niners. I wouldn't mind TT signing him to a 1 year deal and stashing Jones on the practice squad for 2017. He would provide needed depth and also help Montgomery progress in his transition from WR. He also hasn't fumbled during the past 3 seasons (350 rushes and reception). I'm also assuming he can block on passing plays which 88 is still a work in progress

The only back that might get Teds attention is Mike Gillislee. He'd fit into the RB rotation nicely. There is talk he might be a surprise cut in NE.

Even then Aaron Jones has looked really good. So has Ty.

RB isn't a concern. Ted needs to find some OL depth Saturday night.

Difference was Tretter was technically sound an showed nice flashes right away.  Spriggs . . . bad technique, light in the pants.  Spriggs strikes me as a 3 for 4 years project at this point.

You just can't stash a guy on a practice squad. He will be cut and any other team can claim him and he probably would be.(Can you say Vikings?)  He could be put on IR but he would have to actually be injured to make that work.

That logjam at WR is still a logjam. That is some tough cuttage. After the big 3, I'd say Davis is in because of his return skills and Allison is a lock from last year and a strong camp.

Assuming they keep 7 again, that leaves  5 guys (Janis, Yancey, Dupre, McCaffrey and Clark) trying for 2 spots. Dupre and Clark are safe to the PS, so that leaves Janis, Yancey and McCaffrey for 2 spots. I guess Yancey as a 5 pick gets special treatment around here, so he's in for that. I guess. So either Janis or McCaffrey has to go.

Ugh. I don't want to lose either. But of the 2, Janis has peaked as a WR, while McCaffrey is on his way up.

I agree with Chillijon. Bye Jeff.

Rick Spielman was on the Broadcast tonight & he said they have evaluated/ranked about 500 players they think might get cut & hopefully they can land a few to help the team.

The cut this year is CRAZY. Going from 90 to 53. NUTS!

I doubt Jones would be signed by another team...every other team in the NFL is going to cut one or two RBs with the same talent. He looks good in the pre-season but don't overvalue him quite yet

Though we suffered a few injuries, just nice to start the season without having lost anyone for the year. I'm guessing the road to the Super Bowl starts with these 53 plus 10 Practice Squad guys:

OFFENSE (25)

QB (2): Rodgers (33), Hundley
Practice Squad (PS): Hill
Cut: Callahan
Comments: Hundley has acquitted himself well this pre-season. I think Hill has totally outplayed Callahan.

HB (3): Montgomery, Williams (4B), Jones (5B), Mays (7A)
Cut: Phillips
Comments: I now believe all three draft choices will make the final roster.

FB (1): Ripkowski
PS: Kerridge
Comments: Kerridge a nice luxury to keep around.

WR (7): Nelson (32), Cobb, Adams, Davis, Janis, Dupre (7B), Yancey (5A)
Suspended: Allison (1st regular season game)
PS: Clark, McCaffrey
Cut: Crockett
Comments: I am very tempted to keep Clark on the 53. Hate to risk losing his potential, but think Thompson sticks with his two draft picks over him. McCaffrey a nice surprise, worth a PS slot.

TE (3): Bennett (30), Kendricks, Rodgers
Cut: Peck, Byrd
Comments: No change, no surprises here.

OL (8): OT's Bakhitari, Bulaga, Spriggs, Murphy, G's Taylor, J. Evans (34), C's Linsley, Barclay
PS: OT Pankey, G Gray, G/C Amichia (6)
IR: G Patrick
Cut: OT Leff, G McCray, T. Evans
Comments: Appears Bulaga and Barclay will be back for opening game, so keeping 8 instead of 9 on 53. Guessing Patrick goes on IR. Wonder whether Thompson on the look-out for a veteran waiver pickup.

DEFENSE (25)

DL (6): Daniels, Clark, Lowry, Jean-Francois (30), Ringo, Adams
PS: Price
Cut: Lunsford, Fanene, Heurtelou
Comments: Glad to see Lowry back so soon. And hoping Adams healthy enough to avoid IR, sending Price back to PS.

LB (8): OLB's Matthews (31), Perry, Brooks (33), Elliott, Fackrell, ILBs Thomas, Ryan, Martinez
PS: OLB Gilbert
PUP: Biegel (4A)
Cut: OLB's Calvin, Letuligasenua, ILB's Tripp, Heiman, Mathews, Talley
Comments: Love the addition of Brooks. Guessing he'll bring a much needed Wayne Simmons-like nastiness to this LB corps. Bummed to see Biegel on PUP, but look forward to him having a positive impact later in the season.

DB (11): CB's House, King (2A), Rollins, Randall, Hawkins, Gunter, S's Clinton-Dix, Burnett, Jones (2B), Brice, Evans
PS: CB Brown
PUP: CB Goodson
IR: CB Waters
Cut: CB's Pipkins, Pringle, Holmes, S's Whitehead, Taylor
Comments: Gunter showed enough to stick, and think Brown outplayed Pipkins for PS spot.

SPECIAL TEAMS (3)

PK Crosby (32), P Vogel, LS Goode (32)
Comments: Vogel shows very good potential. Will be interesting if Packers find better.

Based on what I've seen in the games I'd keep Hundley and Hill. But, what we see is such a small part of the evaluation, there is the QB room, practice time (and many aspects in that), locker room interactions, reaction on the field to play called vs d alignment. So much.

But, it is fun being a fan.

RatPack, 4 would be perfect.

I think for guys like Janis, Gunter, & Gilbert it will come down to ST assessments.

With Allison suspended for G1 it helps initially, but which WR goes to PS or IR when he comes back? Personally I've seen nothing to indicate Dupre or Yancey should be on the 53, but again we see so little of the evaluation that goes into those decisions.

WR: The big three and Allison, Davis, Janis! and Yancey.

RB: A bit disappointed in what I've seen from Williams and I've been more impressed with Jones. Mays to the PS.

CB: Nice game from Gunter last night that likely secured a spot.

I think you pretty much have it nailed, sschumer.

I'm still a bit worried about Hill's injury history, but if he had to play, our season would be screwed anyway.
OL depth/PS development may change depending on who may be available after cuts. I'm not particularly impressed by anyone you have projected to the PS, but I suppose they are the best choices of who we currently have on the roster.
Hoping Brice's injury is not serious, but if he has to start the season on IR, I'd keep Taylor. Put him on the PS and promote Brown to active roster.

Decision on Price vs Ringo is a tough one. I tend to lean Price as well.

Reggie Gilbert has played well, but the signing of Brooks might have doomed his chances....unless they cut Fackrell !!!

Ironically , the CB, S, OL, TE, etc...cuts are relatively easy as they nicely sorted out during camp.

WR is obviously toughest. Hate to lose Clark or McCaffery but when its close (Yancey, Dupre) history shows Ted will lean to his draft chicks.

I agree, could easily see going with Price over Ringo.  Run stopper vs. pass rusher.  Other possibilities:  Keeping QB Hill on 53.  Think that likely would put one of the rookie RBs on PS -- I'd guess Mays.  Would they consider keeping WR Clark on 53, taking chance Yancey or Dupre instead make it to PS?  That would be a bold move.  Might they go with 9 instead of 8 OL, maybe keeping Patrick, and instead go with only 5 DL instead of 6?  That might mean putting rookie Adams on IR to start the season.

That is my "surprise" cut. Not nearly as stunning as Sitton last season, but I could Ted cutting his losses, keeping Gilbert on the 53, and moving on from a disappointing 3rd round pick

I guess I don't see the Hill love. He's a poor-mans Chris Weinke or Brandon Wheedon: a nice camp story but a 27-year-old UDFA who made some plays against insurance salesmen doesn't scream "spot on the 53 or he'll be snatched away". He's three years older than Hundley and Callahan already and would be in the developmental spot, not the backup spot.

I think McCaffery is essentially what Jared Abbrederis would have been if he had been healthy (and not just because they are both white). He won't wow you with measurables at a combine, but he'll be a solid rotation guy.

I think Fackrell sticks. Jayrone is more at risk, IMO. One trick pony who is now getting hurt more often. He's had four seasons to show growth and I just haven't seen it. Although he supposedly is decent on STs.
