53 man roster

  • Two undrafted rookies, CB Lenzy Pipkins and P Justin Vogel, made the roster. At least one undrafted rookie has made the roster every year of the Ted Thompson era, dating back to 2005.
  • Starting the season on PUP, LB Vince Biegel and CB Demetri Goodson will not be eligible to practice for at least six weeks. After six weeks, a three-week window begins during which they can begin practicing and be placed on the active roster at any time. Once a player practices for the first time, another three-week window opens during which he must be placed on the active roster or be lost for the season.
  • WR Geronimo Allison is suspended for Week 1. He is eligible to return to the active roster after the first game, but a corresponding roster move would be required if the Packers are at the 53-player limit.

Chili, Goodson started TC on the PUP and never practiced. So he stays on PUP from his ACL tear from late last year. Gilbert and Brown are/were never eligible for the PUP since they participated all through TC. There's a big difference there. Goodson may never play for the Pack again, but the only thin lost is perhaps his pay whilst on PUP. Meanwhile Gilbert or Brown could make the PS. BTW your one of my favorites here, just wanted to try and clarify the difference between them.

The best back in the preseason was Aaron Jones. The best special teams player in the preseason might have been Josh Jones.

I get the possible reluctance to have Josh Jones be the FT gunner because he's an asset they have bigger plans for.

But that's no reason to keep Janis, cut Max, and retain Mays. I hope Max lands on the PS. It's going to be close. I think Max fits the offense long term. Janis isn't a ST demon. He isn't. And GB special teams have been middle of the road average for years.

I get why Goodson is on the PUP. But it never should have come to this. Goodson should have been an injury settlement. He's not technically on the 53 but it's an avenue GB could have put to better use. Goodson serves no future roll on the team. You are correct. It's very likely he never plays another game for GB.

The desire to keep Goodson around cost two potential contributors.

And DD. You are good people and a solid contributor to the site. Always good stuff.

I'm confused chilli, how does Goodson being on the pup affect or cost two potential contributors?

I get the angst over Janis v Max but let's not forget we kept Jarrett Bush for years for the same reason.  Dude couldn't play DB but he was very important on special teams.  The hope eventually is he will either figure out WR or one of the younger guys like Jones can take his place. Every roster spot matters and Max looked pretty good at WR.

Interesting that the OL has terrible depth and they keep 10, and WR has a glut of talent and they keep 5 (6 with GA) ??  NO fear of losing Dupre or Yancey to another team, but Clark or McCaffery is a different story. Concern over losing McCray or Patrick ?

Wonder if Price and Ringo were a toss  up, but Price has PS eligibility ?

I get that the talent at RB is very good, but 5 RB on a team that doesn't RTFB ? Maybe for ST contributions. BTW I really like Teds picks here.

Sure hope they can keep and develop several of the fringe guys like T. Hill, Donatello Brown, Reggie Gilbert, Price, Clark , and MCaffery. Unfortunately might lose a few of them.

Nitpicking aside, this team is loaded !!!

The pup doesn't count against the 53?

KK, I don't mean to be presumptuous, but was going to offer some clarification.
A player on PUP does not count against the 53 man roster, but a time limit is set in motion. From Packers.com:
...Starting the season on PUP, LB Vince Biegel and CB Demetri Goodson will not be eligible to practice for at least six weeks. After six weeks, a three-week window begins during which they can begin practicing and be placed on the active roster at any time. Once a player practices for the first time, another three-week window opens during which he must be placed on the active roster or be lost for the season.

Thanks Timmy.  And that's what I've always understood it to be which is why I was confused about chilli's anger over Goodson being on the pup and taking up roster spots.  He was talking about former years roster spots, which I understand, but it's spilled milk, and I sure don't care about Goodson enough to spend any time arguing over it.  Only reason I questioned it at all was thinking he had some sort of knowledge that I didn't that I could learn from.
