Given his play...
I like Gilbert and the energy he brings. Yes, he's only gone against NFL-wannabe's, but quickness and desire are there.

Fackrell is going no where. TT is a patient, patient man.
I prefer Gilbert.
All things being equal Gilbert would get the nod over Fackrell, but all things aren't equal (third round). Don't see TT giving up on him this early but next year he'll have to show development or else. Think Gilbert basically had a spot pretty much locked up but the Brooks signing changed that.
Add Calvin Heurtelou, the D-lineman who was a late camp pick up and had been impressive in last week's 1-on-1s, to the Packers cuts so far
Rob Demovsky @RobDemovsky
The Packers have started cuts. Released CB Daquan Holmes and RB Kalif Phillips, per their agents. Both were...
Cardinals cut Chris Johnson, since some want a RB so bad
Packer cuts so far...
Derek Hart, LS
Calvin Heurtelou, DT
Shaneil Jenkins, DE
Colby Pearson, WR
Kalif Phillips, RB
William Stanback, RB
Texans cut Sio Moore / Pats cut Kony Ealy
Rob Demovsky @RobDemovsky
The Packers have released rookie OLB Jonathan Calvin. There's a chance he ends up on the practice squad.
Based on who was in camp as of yesterday, here's my 53. Other teams cuts will likely change the mix of chicks and ducks.

Not to belabor the issue, but this line of reasoning--that draft picks should get extra time to show something just because of their draft status--sounds worse every time I hear it and in every context it is used.
Bottom line has to be what the player is showing. Fackrell has shown nothing since day 1. To give him a spot on the 53 this year with some "next year" ultimatum is ridiculous. It's a wasted spot.
The more I hear it, the more it sounds like such reasoning is not about the player or his future or what is best for the team at all. Rather it's about TT wanting to prove himself right. The only thing "invested" is his ego.
Let it go, Ted. Kyler "James Lee" Fackrell isn't going to get any better. He's just not a baller. And Yancey and Dupre just aren't ready for the 53, it really is that simple. Take credit for signing guys like Gilbert and McCaffrey and move forward with the better players.

In 2013, the Safety job was given to 2012 4th rounder Jerron McMillian. He was so bad he was cut by midseason and all we had behind him was M.D. Jennings. The Safety play was historically bad that season and neither McMillian nor Jennings was even in the NFL in 2014.
In 2015, the TE job was given to Richard Rodgers and he was backed up by the immortal Justin Perillo. We all watched the 2 yard outs in which RR always caught the ball and immediately went down upon first contact. RR was so ineffective that MM openly lobbied for a big-body presence down the middle of the field and TT subsequently signed 3 free agents over the next two seasons to play in his place.
Now, there are two glaring concerns at backup T and at OLB in large part because last season's 2nd and 3rd round picks have not progressed as expected. Fortunately, and most unexpectedly, TT signed a competent OLB in Brooks this week to obviate Fackrell's poor play but counting on Fackrell for anything this season seems foolish.
As for Spriggs, every fan should be praying for Bakh & Bulaga to remain healthy because if he is ever charged with protecting ARod then the franchise QB will be at real risk.
Ted drafted Nick Collins, Morgan Burnett, and Clinton Dix. So pack sand on your Safety thoughts.
Outside the fact he can't block. You can do a lot worse than Richard Rodgers at TE. Rodgers caught more TDs than the guy MM lobbied for last year.
Fackrell sucks.
Every fan should be praying that Ted's OL draft pick doesn't have to replace Ted's OL draft picks.
Other than that you make some good points.
I do wonder if Gunter could play OLB. He is tough, competitive, can cover slower guys, and can rush the passer. Granted sample size in that roll is small. One thing to wonder about is if he is big enough to hold up against the run.
WR's: Jordy, Cobb, Adams,T.Davis, Maxwell "Silver Hammer" McCaffrey
RB's: Monty, Williams, Jones or Mays
TE-- Marty, Kendricks, RichRod.
PS--Jones or Mays, Yancy or Dupre, Taysom Hill, M.Clark, the other Tight end (can't remember his name),
Surprise, you made the team! -- J.Tripp, M.Evans, K. Brice, Hawkins
Cut -- Fackrell. Possibly Elliott, too (well, if we had enough depth there .. But we don't, so it won't happen). Janis, D.Goodson, please!
ST MVP--Vogel

TT has certainly drafted some very good players at Safety including HHCD, Burnett, and Nick Collins. Furthermore, Marwin Evans, who was undrafted, was the surprise of training camp.
However, it is still the case that in 2013, after Collins had been forced to retire in 2011 and before HHCD was drafted in 2014, the Safety position along side Burnett was given to McMillian (and I guess Jennings) and that turned out to be an unmitigated disaster. Darren Perry even made reference to those dark days when he spoke to reporters earlier this week.
Signing Brooks this week to be the third OLB instead of (2016 3rd round pick) Fackrell avoided a similar type of disaster at that position this year.
Tackle is the other position that currently looks like it could be a huge problem if either Bulaga or Bakhtiari (superb TT picks from 2010 and 2013) get injured, because neither Spriggs nor Murphy looks close to capable of replacing them. Hence, rather than rely on either of these 2016 draft picks, it would great if TT considered going outside the organization to add a veteran T who could at least pass block. The team has the $ and the need.
As for Richard Rodgers, yes he caught more TDs than Cook last year when Cook missed several games and he does have very good hands. However, he can't block, run, or break a tackle to save his life, which is why in the prime of his career (year 4) TT signed two free agent TEs and relegated him to 3rd string.
So you're saying Ted hasn't failed the positions you are saying he's failed?
I would've been throwing the holy hell of all fits if Hawkins didn't make this team.
Stud boy!
One thing I wish Green Bay would emulate with the Seahawks is their tackling ability. Grab, twist, then the runner falls. EVERY. ****ING. TIME!
It's a rugby move.
If fackrell gets cut, NO ONE will add him to their 53. He's safe for the PS
It's gotten to a point where Fackrell is likely a waste of a practice squad spot as well.
I'd sooner see that 10th spot go to a player with actual upside and can develop and get better. I think the Packers have reached their ceiling with 51
As others have written before, a bigger mistake is hanging onto a bust pick in vein. The smarter move is to admit it's a bust pick and move on.
ILB Cody Heiman has been released
OG Geoff Gray has been released. There's a possibility he'll return on the practice squad.
I thought Fackrell had a D+ rating last year? That's pretty good for a 3rd round pick in his rookie year. You all have it rong about the guy. He just needs more time.
From Tom Silverstein:
The #Packers will waive QB Joe Callahan, according to an NFL source. There is interest in him returning to PS, but there will be competition.
More from Silverstein:
Packers have released DL Izaah Lunsford. He's definitely a candidate for practice squad. I think he will return for sure. He's a big guy who flashed some talent inside. Kenny Clark was really high on Lunsford.
My fanboy preference is Price over Ringo, Gilbert over Fackrell, Donatello Brown over Gunter....so fully expecting Ted to do the opposite.
Interested to see if they protect Hill or try to sneek him through.
I'm leaning toward keeping three QB's on the notion that Tyson Hill's athleticism would be too much for some other team to pass up. Could be way overestimating his appeal, but if the Packers really want him on the roster long term they probably have to keep leave him there now.
ChilliJon posted:So you're saying Ted hasn't failed the positions you are saying he's failed?
Nope, saying Ted failed in 2013 at Safety by awarding the starting position to his 2012 draft pick McMillian and in 2015 at TE by granting the starting job to his 2014 draft pick R. Rodgers, both times without any legitimate competition.
Further hoping he does not make the same mistake at backup T in 2017 by awarding the position to two 2016 draft picks who do not look close to being ready to step in should Bakh or Bulaga (who is already nicked up) go down.
Also applauding his signing of Ahmad Brooks to fill the huge void at OLB behind Perry & Matthews rather than insisting the team go with 2016 pick Fackrell.

My choices as well.

Neh, he's not BJ Watt, he probably shouldn't even be in the league.
Per WTMJ.COM, QB Tayson Hill has been cut.
My take is that Murphy can run block and is best on the right side of the line. He might also have value as a right guard backup. I still see upside potential from Spriggs but only as a tackle. I agree that Brown looks like he is improving and worth consideration but Gunter has the experience and inside track as the last CB. Gilbert looks way better than Fackrell but Fackrell has speed and potential. It's a crapshoot but this years backups look better than many of last years starters and that's a good problem to have.
If the Packers decide to not go with Vogel..
Panthers released veteran punter Andy Lee and are planning to go with Mike Palardy as their punter, per source.

Dumb logic....
I think this is a risk for two reasons: 1) Hill could get claimed on waivers 2) Hundley hasn't shown he can win games yet, in my opinion
— Michael Cohen (@Michael_Cohen13) September 2, 2017
I read that by waiting to sign Brooks until Sunday they can carry a man on the roster and then IR-DTR. I wonder who that guy is?
Well Hill has not proven he can wins games yet either
Correct, why it's stupid reasoning.
