Sorry, but I don't care how many stories praising Ball he managed to get placed in the papers, it doesn't change the fact he has no demonstrated ability to peform the task the Packers need the most right now--player evaluation.

Well said. I remember reading glowing stories about Marc Trestman after he was hired by the Bears. I trust stories a lot more when they actually include some not so flattering things.

There has to be a thin line between what you you say to the media and what is the truth. If you say it in a press conference you are also saying it to your team. As a coach you canโ€™t be too honest if you think your players arenโ€™t great because at some point you might have to count on them to win games for you.

Sometimes players need a kick in the ass & if MM says "You ain't good enough....prove me wrong!" That will get most pro athletes a little more focused to Do their job!

Not excusing McCarthy with mis-reading/advertising Hundley, at least from what we fans saw.

Have to wonder how much of the QB room was information from AVP and Bennett, versus how often was McCarthy actually there? While he is a QB coach, and an offensive guy, as HC he has a lot of responsibilities so maybe he relied on what his coordinators told him? Again, not excusing...

You guys really don't know when it's good or bad, when it comes right down to it. ... And I'm promising you right now, you don't know whether it's good or bad. You really don't know, because you don't know what we're trying to do, you guys don't look at the films, you don't know what happened, you really don't know. Bad Bob speculating the job has long been Ball's, and that Gutekunst will be his personnel guy and Eliot likely will move on.

Also some speculation MM has coached his last game for the Packers as he and Ball's philosophies are opposites.

Interesting times at 1265...

The suggestion that there is tension between Ball and McCarthy is interesting.  MM was very complimentary of Ball yesterday, and noted their long history together.

And if TT recognized that there was tension between Ball and MM, but believed that Ball was his definite successor, why would the Packers extend MM?  That doesn't add up.

A couple of key passages from McGinn's article:

"Schneider, the De Pere native and a close friend of McCarthy, and Armstrong, his agent, have attempted to wriggle free of his restrictive contract as GM in Seattle, according to a friend. Murphy has been an enormous fan of Schneider during his successful eight-year run with the Seahawks."

"...a source said the Packers want to hire Vic Fangio as defensive coordinator."

Shoot for the moon, with today's story and with his 2 coordinators perhaps moving on to HC positions, go for Billy B.  He would love nothing better create another dynasty, especially since the most important position is filled. He is 65 and has some years left. Get/keep a money guy for that important aspect and go for it.

A real football guy in charge of the everything, a guy can dream.  A real plus would  be all the heads xploding around here.

McGinn, please don't tease me like that.

This would be my dream outcome.

I wouldn't be surprised if McCarthy is lobbying to some degree for Schneider. They are pretty close if I recall, MM met his wife through Schneider I think?

If you want negative on Ball, I would be willing to bet money he's the reason we haven't dipped into free agency that often. I don't think TT is/was as totally anti-free agency as he's made out to be, I think GB had/has trouble attracting FAs. That article on Ball talked about his negotiating style as well as GB's contract preferences. I would be willing to bet they have pursued many FAs and GB dug in on issues like guaranteed dollars and the agents/players passed. I imagine guaranteed dollars is a make or break issue in these negotiations. Ball is the guy that handles that, could be that he's too inflexible and free agents looking for the security of guaranteed dollars are avoiding us. Just speculation though.

It's interesting there are so many "leaks" coming from GB, an organization that is famously tight lipped with this stuff. The external interviews are not surprising, I'm sure those leaks are coming from the interviewees camp to probably drum up a new contract or title from their current employer (DeCosta especially, he's not leaving Baltimore). So far the team has only confirmed that there are internal candidates, correct? Any "sources" indicating there is a preferred candidate are likely bogus at this point.

Wilde says he has heard Ball has been actually running a lot of GM decisions over the past two years.  MM has been unhappy with TT's approach to player personnel, as he basically said during his press conference.  Maybe the source of contention for MM is that he believes Ball will have the same approach to player personnel --no free agents, draft and develop, with a guy that has no personnel experience now calling the shots.

Of all the candidates we have heard, the last one I want running the show in GB is Russ Ball.  No, no, no....

1 - Schneider (You do what it takes to get his ass to GB if he is willing... and I'd be shocked if he didn't want to come home)

2a - Wolf

2b - Guten****

You can't go wrong with either 2a or 2b.

But just no to Russ f'ing Ball.

I'm actually happy to see MM express himself about the "fit" with the GM.  Rumor has it that neither MM or AR are fans of Ball as the GM.  Good enough for me...

So i may need to catch up on all of this.........but who is Russ Ball?  I have never even heard his name when discussing the Packers front office.  He played some college football, was a strength and conditioning coach for awhile, then held a few positions with 'football administration' in the title.  Is he in a similar role that Andrew Brandt had back in the 90's?  Does this Ball guy know anything about scouting?
