"Tried" means nothing when you see/hear it as many times as we have without anything actually happening. If an actual result occurred more than once a decade it might be different, but throwing out a couple of low-ball offers isn't operating in good faith. This is just trying to save face.

It’s a question of how much they are willing (and able) to pay. A second and later round pick for a so-so player is not a low-ball offer. But Florio agrees with you and the team does not have much of a history doing so for decades. However, I do remember us trading for Hadiel.

Why is Andy Herman an expert on anything?

You can expand that to any number of the Packers fanboy media types...

The best Packers journalists are Spoon, Ryan Wood and Kassidy Hill. Wood will ask tough questions. Hill's piece on special teams for the Packers last off-season was fantastic.

Very rough year for Gutey's 2021 draft class.

The Packers have brought on longtime NFL assistant coach Aubrey Pleasant, per sources. He joined the Packers last week, shortly after he was fired as defensive coach of the Lions. He previously worked with Packers coach Matt LaFleur in Wash

Interesting commentary from Mike Wahle about 13 min in, talks about when he was a coach at Miami there was this dynamic that personnel guys were always hung up on wanting to be right about the guys they draft, and basically blamed lack of development on poor coaching. But Wahle said from a coaches perspective, some guys just don't have the mentality in spite of having the "measurables," personnel guys look at.

To me, this sort of encapsulates what we've seen from Gutey in his time here...it just takes him an inordinate amount of time to cut bait on guys...Amari Rodgers a prime example.

Joe-Bob Barry obviously needs replacement...but maybe Gutey isn't always great at picking the best players...

Particularly disturbing comment from Wahle around the 22 min mark...

"This is a draft and develop team, and we don't do much development. We don't win single blocks very often on the OL in the run game. And we don't tackle well. Those are some basic fundamentals."

OUCH!!!

Dang. Now what are we going to bitch about?

The list of things Gute has done right is pretty significant in that article, and looking back on it, it's pretty impressive. I'm like most of you: let's see what he does now that he gets to build according to his vision without the albatross of Rodgers' pals and Rodgers himself. Most of all, Gute will be judged on Love's performance. Sometimes it doesn't matter how good other players are; it all rests on the shoulder pads of the QB. If Love works out, Gute could be among the top execs by the time he's done.

For that matter, let's see how MLF does as well. He has about two years to prove he can do this on his own without a HOF QB (yet).

Puff piece. MVS was a really good pick but let's not get carried away. If he was a true "game changer" as the article suggests the Packers would have figured out a way to keep him.

Yup, The article notes that Savage was a good choice in the first round as well which he was not.

They weren't using Savage properly last year. I believe that changes this year.

Let's find out after 2023

did Joe Barry get fired? did joe Barry have an epiphany? Did MLS grow a pair and read Joe the riot act? Did the light finally come on for Savage? Did Savage take tackling practice during the off-season? I do not have a lot of faith in either one of them. I hope i am wrong....

SI had a long article about what happened inside the Rodgers trade. A couple of things stood out: Gute went out west planning to meet with Rodgers while on scouting trips, but that meeting never happened; the article hints that was on Rodgers. Gute sent out feelers to several teams on trading Rodgers, and the only team that bit was the Jets. The rest of the article was devoted to hammering out the details which were deemed fair to both teams in the end. It also seemed like there was no way Johnson would agree to a 1 in 2024. In the end, the deal agreed to was deemed fair by all.

I wondered about that.  In the article, they made sure to point out that Gute's "feelers" were very vague so as not to tip his hand that he knew he'd have to move AR.  I wonder if any other teams were interested but didn't speak up because they didn't think the trade was a real possibility.  We'll never know.

By golly, after reading this article how could anyone disagree with the notion that Gutey combines the best attributes of Ron Wolf and Ted Thompson into one super incredible GM. No wonder the rest of the NFL is so envious.

Speaking of Ron, I seem to recall the Pack got to the SB and won it in his 6th year as GM (or maybe 5th year if you consider he took over later in the 1991 season).

As for Ted, he took over as GM in 2005 and the Pack got to and won a SB in 2010, which, if I'm not mistaken, was also his 6th season, as GM.

Anyone know what year this is as GM of the Green Bay Packers for the incomparable Gutey?

I think they kept the "feelers" vague to not tip too much of their hand and make it seem like they had to move Rodgers and risk getting less for him. In reality, they did have to move him because, as someone pointed out, the relationship between Rodgers and the FO was absolutely toxic. I think that toxicity was infecting the entire team, including MLF. I just found it "interesting" -- and revealing -- when the author hinted that there was really only one team that expressed an interest in trading for Rodgers. I don't think there was much of a market for Rodgers, but it only takes one partner to dance and the Jets stepped onto the floor.

I am not an NFL GM or coach.  Everything I know is from the internet.  It’s hard for me to judge the job he is doing because I have no idea what I am talking about.

One thing I have heard, however is that Gutey is a respected GM in the league.  He often shows up on the lists of top GMs in the league from people in the know.  I think we’d miss him if he was gone.

This is one of the reasons the whole "wah wah I hate the Jets because they think they can have AR for nothing because they're dealing with a bunch of hayseeds" narrative was silly.  Not only Gute but the whole organization is highly respected around the league.

There are a few good GMs in the league, but Gute is no doubt Top 5. I love when little haters claim he should be fired. Too funny.

Normally comes from some little guy that became a Packers fan in like 2010. Who cares what they think? They already purchased their #8 Jets jersey and broke both ankles jumping off the wagon. Good Riddance!
