Re: The Invisible Man known as Ted Thompson
I agree it would be nice to see a more unified front, but do you really see every other GM in the league stand up and be accountable for losses? I don't keep up with other teams press conferences, but are Dave Gettleman and Steve Keim taking the heat for their coaches right now? Maybe they are, I honestly don't know, but my hunch is that most GM's stay out of the spotlight as much as possible. Guys like Jerry Jones do it because they love the attention, but I don't think that is part of the...

Re: The Invisible Man known as Ted Thompson
TT's condescending, passive-aggressive Nathan Jessup act is rather tiring, but I'm not sure there's any solution to that. I don't think he's built to be a public speaker and he's been given the leeway to take advantage of that. That's as much structure as anything. Ron Wolf was at home in a crowd. He came in to a moribund situation and made himself the focal point. I do see many other GMs being more up-front than TT but I doubt that will change, regardless.

Re: The Invisible Man known as Ted Thompson
I think what fans want is accountability. Thompson's communication style + the unique structure of power in GB makes accountability a greater challenge here than elsewhere. Obviously that's a non-issue when things are going well. Likewise, it's irrelevant what other GMs do b/c every other GM has an owner who often addresses the concerns of disappointing seasons though words, actions, or both. In the 90's you had two strong people in Harlan and Wolf, who would join Holmgren, who would address...

Re: The Ugly, The Bad ...and the Good?
Only if you hit about 3 home runs in a row. They got a HOF QB with the 23rd pick, a guy who played at a HOF level for several years with the 26th pick (CM3), and a HOF DB who came to Green Bay on a discount because everyone else thought he was washed up (Woodson). That's 3 HOF-level players at 3 of the 4 most important positions (QB, edge rusher, CB) without having a top 5 pick. That coupled with having 2 of your other top 3 CBs being UDFA that played like Pro Bowlers on small contracts...

Sartori, good call from my previous post. I would be in favor of Wolf being the new GM, but mainly because I know who he is and I respected what his dad did. I don't know anything about the rest of the front office other than Ball. GD, I'm not saying I'll enjoy them losing, but mabye this team needs the advantage of drafting in the top 10. It's no guarantee they'd draft a superstar, but it seems like it's more likely than limping into the playoffs and drafting at #24ish. It's kinda like...

I missed the interview where Tim Cook went through his whole thought process for every decision on every level that he's made this year. Also it's the expectation of the CEO to be the face of the organization, Ted is not the face of the Packers. CU is right, Thompson doesn't owe the fans any explanations and he certainly is not required to publicly shoulder any blame. Just because Ron Wolf chose to do it doesn't mean Thompson has to.

Good read from Silverstein on the potential Wolf/TT decision awaiting Murphy this offseason. While most of it has been discussed - TT's recent struggles/age and demand for Wolf - there was a factor brought up I hadn't considered. The Titletown district is perhaps the team's biggest business venture yet, and it starts opening next season. The powers that be might be less patient to wait out a downturn in play than any point in Packer history. http://www.packersnews.com/sto...mpson-wolf/94347888/

Re: Let's Remember Some Guys
The Chmura thing was total BS. I know the whole story from people involved. The girl who cried wolf was a mental case. Chewy was in the bathroom changing and she goes in and locks the door behind her. He did nothing. She did it for the attention. (I know the person whose house this happened at.)

Re: Round 1 Pick 26 (From Miami) QB Jordan Love Utah State
But Herbert has some warts as well. That’s my point. Had he been there at 26 I would have pulled the trigger to draft him as well. But is he a slam dunk at 6? I guess if you are the Chargers that desperately need a QB. It’s so much better to not have to take a guy based on pure need because you can talk yourself into just about everything. Kind of like Ron Wolf taking 3 corners in a row to counter Moss. The best player of the group was Mike McKenzie in the 3rd round.

6 WR's selected in round 1. Quite obvious the 7th WR on the board is not first round material. I would've preferred LB/DB/OL too but the FO really likes Love & had him rated highly. Rule #1 from Ron Wolf. -- Don't jump the board.

Re: 2020 NFL Draft Viewing Thread DAY 2/Day 3
81 more players get drafted before the Packers next pick. Is Devin Funchess really the answer to their problems at WR? How many NFL level ILBs do they actually have on the roster right now? Degura ran a 4.72 40. He's a little faster than RichRod (4.82). I'm more confused about this draft than any since the Packers actually got to the modern era (when they hired Ron Wolf). Gutey gets paid a lot because they think he knows what he's doing. They were 13-3 last year.

Ron Wolf did it with CBs the year after Randy Moss was a rookie. TT did it with CBs year and after year.

Re: 2020 NFL Draft Viewing Thread DAY 2/Day 3
I know. Did you see how well it worked out for Wolf. The 3rd pick of the bunch ended up being the best and then forced his way out of town through a trade to NO. I wouldn't say it was very successful for TT either. Randall/Rollins... TT did sometimes hit on one of his, "double down" picks. We did parlay Vinson into a trade for Ahman Green so that definitely worked out for us!

We know all that now. But leading up to the 1991 draft 'tough' was discounted by many in favor of 'raw'. In fact plenty saw him as raw. A wild guy who just threw where and when he wanted to - seemingly. Among guys who knew, his production and his arm was intriguing. But how could he be disciplined enough to work within a system? That was the kind of questions he faced. And in Wisconsin the "Brett who???!!!" screams were loud and clear when our new GM traded a number one pick for him. Most...

Re: End of Season +/-
Holmgren and Wolf became smart enough to beat the Niners and Cowboys for 2 reasons. They traded for Brett Favre and signed Reggie White. Having LeRoy Butler and great depth also contributed, but Favre and White were the difference. We all loved Shurmur and he was a good Xs and Os guy, but he was available to come to Green Bay because the previous two years his defenses in Phoenix were 25th and 20th ranked. He had the most dominant front 4 in Packers history anchored by the best defensive...

Re: End of Season +/-
Packers didn't ignore it when they passed on Moss. Wolf said they had Holliday rated higher as a football player. That thought was correct because while I know Moss is in the HoF, remember the "I play when I wanna play" mantra? When he was on the Raiders? They were rightly concerned about the guys heart even though ooodles of "talant."

Re: End of Season +/-
They needed weapons for Favre, which Wolf admitted to later. There is no way Holliday was the BPA*, they passed on Moss because of stuff. *Which is how this got started by you.

Re: End of Season +/-
What we do know is that Vonnie Holiday wasn't the player Wolf traded up to get...it was DB Shaun Williams from UCLA. But then Vonnie was still on the board and Wolf snatched him instead https://www.drafthistory.com/index.php/years/1998

Re: End of Season +/-
SATORI, you may be right, but that's not how I remember it. Wolf went for need, wanting to replace Reggie White, so he reached for Holliday. Wolf often did that. He did t when he reached for Bubba Franks in reaction to the hot-tub incident with Chmura. He did it when he reached for DB Antuan Edwards in reaction to Vikings drafting Moss the year before. Truth be told, Wolf most often went for need and had a horrible record in the first round. What distinguished him was signing Reggie White,...

Re: End of Season +/-
of course I'm right, I took it straight from Wolf 1998, DE Vonnie Holliday (19th overall selection): Wolf traded up 10 spots, hoping to land safety Shaun Williams, but was delighted to find Holliday still on the board. Holliday has been a solid starter the last five years, but the unrestricted free agent recently signed with Kansas City. "Really and truly, we made the deal to get Shaun Williams," Wolf said. "We figured Holliday would be gone. But fortunately, Vonnie was there. And that pick...

With regards to Denver's defense, I will say as Winston Wolf so eloquently stated " Well, let's not start sucking each other's dicks quite yet." Denver's defense has performed well thus far. No doubt. But, they ain't exactly played a murderer's row of team to date. Baltimore (1-6) 15th in scoring offense Kansas City (2-5) 21st Detroit (1-6) 29th Minnesota (4-2) 26th Oakland (3-3) 10th Cleveland (2-5) 23rd I'm not saying they aren't a talented defense, and they vary well could shut down the...

I completely agree. Even though the D has been horrendous sometimes making a change for the sake of change is not the answer. My question for a few years now has been is it the coaching or is it the players? Has the league figured out Dom's defenses or is it a lack of play makers? I still say it is a lack of...

At least it's interesting enough to prompt some thought, and wasn't written as a "Packers looking to acquire..." story. I have no idea what implications this would have on the salary cap; i.e., if we have to assume the remainder of his contract, can we get him at/near minimum salary, or whatever the case may be. I'm sure the Packers have the room to do a deal, but I couldn't see much more than $1M for the remainder of this season. Like many others, I don't want him in Green Bay either. But...

Re: Bert's Induction Speech
PA has had his share of classic calls. I still think the Nate Poole audio call should be inducted into the HOF. The Brint play is solid but "No! No! is still the gold standard. Ron Wolf should be the guy to induct Brent. Without his bold decision to trade for him- and essentially tell the team doctors to eff off (after Bert failed his physical) - who knows where 4 would have ended up? Luck plays a big factor in some of this outcome.

I still remember hearing of the Bret Favor trade while listening to "Steve the Homer True" while driving in the car. The rest of the show was dedicated to this reckless decision by a Al Davis hack ...giving up a #1 for a guy missing 20 ft. of his intestines. LOL...good times. But really...on the information available at the time...it was reckless. It all starts with Harlan...and him hiring Wolf. The story is still being written.

Yes! and why not? Bengston went 6-7-1 hardly any better than Rhodes first season at 8-8 and Wolf was just fine in firing him. If Wolf could do it to Rhodes there is no good reason Lombardi couldn't have done it to Bengston...and maintained his Green Bay legacy...as we expect Favre to do. The only reason Lombardi's legacy wasn't damaged is that he suddenly died unexpectedly and tragically. I remember very well when Lombardi bolted to the Redskins...and it was not how you are portraying it.

Was Lomabardi not offered 5% of the team as part of the deal to go coach the Redskins! I also do not see the connection! Favre wanted to srick it to the Packers and Lombardi did not have that motivation.

Favre played three more years after MM told him... we are moving on. I don't believe Lombardi was fired. Not to say Favre didn't probably deserve it...but he was still able to play. Why can't Favre do it for the money, if Lombardi can? All together 12 Mill from the Jets and about 28 Million from the Vikings...that's 40 Million more dollars in Favre's pocket.
