I asume there were discussions between GB and Shields' agent prior to that decision. The part that is scary is that you have so many former GB guys around the League now - Dorsey in KC and McKenzie in Oakland could both use a guy like Shields, maybe Schneider too. And don't forget Mr Philbin in Miami where Shields came from...
I think its a HUGE risk if Sam wants to play someplace else; if he's happy being a starter on a SB contender, then no worries. I always wonder how committed Miami guys are to the Frozen Tundra....
It's also a deep draft so I'm betting teams are less likely to spend the pick AND the cash if they feel they can get a comparable player with the pick at a rookie contract price.
Looks pretty happy and committed to mequote:Originally posted by Sadumdum:

Hard to change that one. Could maybe a Colt but that's about it.

agree completely. This one is risky, but I see not putting the first round tender on him as well.
yeah, I think TT has the pulse on this scenario.
pretty good stock of young lads on his roster, good stock in the draft, probably eye-balling some value at safety/tweeners in Freeagency if the opportunity presents itself.
jmo.
Tough to invoke the tatoo argument. Like Antonio Cromartie says, only syphilis lasts forever.

Let's see if someone like the Vikings wants to "poison pill" the Pack now. I think in the new CBA they can't do that
tom silverstein â@TomSilverstein
The #Packers have officially reduced DE Johnny Jolly's salary to $715,000, knocking $1.8 million off the cap and putting them at $18M under.

I'm enjoying what the bears are doing to the queens with Loadholt tho.
First Per-say, and now Choadholt...AP finna blow a gasket if they lose The Choad!

I don't care if Choadholt is in Minny or Chitcago, Clay Matthews is going to whoop him wherever he is.
Yowza.
@TomPelissero: BREAKING: Vikings just released Antoine Winfield.

Ted's got GB about 16-18 mil under the cap and little ricky can't stand it.

Hmmm, interesting ...

Heard some rumors about Steven Jackson ending up in Green Bay.
I think he will replace Turner in ATL
I had no idea Winfield was 35 y/o till today.
No thanks.
No thanks.
Eagles release Nnamdi.
The dream is officially dead.
The dream is officially dead.
I've lost count how many DB's and Safeties have hit the market over the last 10 days but it's a big number.
Quick dump of fresh info.
Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network "hearing last minute buzz" that the Rams will sign Jake Long.
Kevin Jones reporting the Lions signed DeAngelo Hall formerly of the Redskins.
Pelissero reporting the Queens resigned Choadholt.
Also, Jim Wyatt reporting that the Titans dumped Jordan Babineaux and Mitch Petrus.

Vikes re-sign Loadholt
Bears sign TE Martellus Bennett
Lions sign Deangelo Hall

Lions sign Deangelo Hall
Solid signing by the Bears. Bennett was really good last season. He was much better than Finley.
No surprise but Miami and Mike Wallace are in talks about a 5 year deal. Looks like a lock he'll be going there
Glad to see Hall going to Detroit. He should be a great fit there; another loud-mouthed, over-hyped, under-acheiving player added to their roster.
Can't wait to watch our WR's toast him regularly.

Just proves that the best moves in FA are often the ones not made.
The Packers would have the opportunity to match any offer Shields got so the risk in that tender is virtually non-existent.

Finley had more catches in fewer targets than Bennett last year. Bennett had 5 TD's. Finley 2.
Agree it's an upgrade for Chicago. Not that he was much better than Finely.
Mike Silver of Yahoo Sports reporting the Bears "showing no urgency" resigning Urlacher, and that he's drawn "mild interest" from the Cowboys.
John McClain reporting that the Eagles and Dolphins interested in former Texan FB/TE James Casey.
Mary Kay Cabot saying the Patriots are favorites to sign WR/KR Josh Cribbs from the Browns.
And Schefter reporting on NFL Live that the Titans are in the race for Danny Amendola

Dashon Goldson to visit with the Bucs
Oooohhh....Pats going after Cribbs would be very big for them. He would be their Randall Cobb
Browns close to a deal with Paul Kruger
Titans going after Delanie Walker. I've always liked Walker. Solid blocker. Good hands. 49'ers tried to find creative ways to get him on the field with Davis. Even lined him up as a FB.
And, this just in from Green Bay.......Ted Thompson is preparing for the draft.
Bills release Fitzpatrick. After the phone call recording, you knew that move was coming soon
Ted's probably figuring out how to sign AR12 and Clay to long term extensions. Just a guess.
And counting his nickels, though Jake Long is out there and I could get behind that signing.

Since then, Detroit area beat writers have declared this one false. Speaking of the Kitties, Schefter reporting Reggie Bush is paying them a visit.
Adam Teicher reporting the Chiefs agree to terms with Anthony Fasano.
EDIT: Also Mendenhall to visit Cards and Broncos, Saints restructure Vilma and Smith's contracts, Jake Long to visit the Rams.
Giants re-signed Aaron Ross after his 1 year stint in Jacksonville. Loved him out of the draft but he hasn't been super special, just solid.

Dumb. Fitzpatrick isn't great, but he's not that bad considering he has absolute crap to throw to and now everyone knows the Bills must get a QB, though a trade for Nick Foles wouldn't be a surprise.
Andrew Brandtâ@adbrandt
Strategy in GB was to hope for as much "stupid money" spent in early days of FA, then sift through rest of group.
I also get the sense that after Ted knocked close to $2 million off Jolly's salary he spent most of today working on his draft board and now he's on Orvis.com shopping for a new fly fishing reel.
