Oh.
@Rand_Getlin: Source: the #49ers are bracing themselves for the loss of LB Patrick Willis. Expecting him to retire.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the sound of the 49ers falling into the Bay...
@PackerUpdate: 49ers ILB Patrick Willis is expected to retire today. He'll still be more productive than A.J. Hawk and Brad Jones next season.
Enter AJ Hawk. Would be a perfect signing....
Aggh, too bad the Bears got McPhee. Good player, hopefully he will disappear in the suck.
Why in the hell would Maclin want to go to KC ? Alex Smith is a WR killer.
He's a Reid guy.
Texans re-sign Ryan Mallet, he'll compete with Brian Hoyer for the starting job.
No effing way, Patrick Willis is going to retire? Been awhile since a surprise retirement like this. Barry Sanders and Robert Smith were the two others that floored me when they happened.
Maclin is from Missouri and went to Mizzou. Plus was drafted by and played for Andy Reid.
Potentially good news on the Bulaga front here. JAX was said to be in the hunt for OTs with BB heading their list.
@RapSheet: Former #Cowboys swing tackle Jermey Parnell has told friends he plans to head to the #Jaguars, sources say.
@AdamSchefter: Former Packers LB A.J. Hawk is in Cincinnati today, visiting the Bengals.
I've read a little about McPhee and the stats actually say he was a bit overrated last year. Two things popped out:
-He was easily the #3 pass rusher on the team, meaning he never faced double teams and often got a better matchup than Suggs and Dumervil. That will significantly increase productivity for any pass rusher.
-6.5 of his 7.5 sacks came against Tampa Bay, Atlanta, Jacksonville and Cleveland. Those are four very very poor offensive lines and QBs (outside of Matt Ryan). His only other sack was against Indy, whose line isn't exactly great.
I think he was in a great situation as the #3 pass rusher and he racked up sacks against bad o-lines and QBs. He's probably a solid player but likely would not be a teams #1 pass rusher. He's a complimentary player. I'm not too worried about this signing.
@NickMensio: Jermey Parnell out here getting $6.5M per year for 7 career starts through 6 seasons. Joe Barksdale and Bryan Bulaga gonna break the bank.
"No effing way, Patrick Willis is going to retire? "
Announced it on Sirius radio.
His wiki page already has his career in the past tense. "Was" a linebacker for the 49ers.
I think you'll see more guys get out while they can still spend the money and remember the accolades. More and more GMs aren't giving big contracts for guys over 30, so why not leave before becoming a total physical wreck and having mush for brain? You get your rookie deal, get that huge contract in the middle, get a last four-year front-loaded deal and get cut after two, then call it quits at 30/31/32, and spend the rest of your time doing what you want. What's not to like about that?
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the sound of the 49ers falling into the Bay...
@SBNationNFL: Uh oh, 49ers. Justin Smith is expected to join Patrick Willis and retire too.

@CamInman: #49ers SB XLVII defensive starters (*gone):
*McDonald
*Sopoaga
*JSmith
ASmith
Brooks
Bowman
*Willis
*Rogers
*Brown
*Goldson
*Whitner
We can revel in watching Pete go down in flames. Face of the NFL, that's what's important.
Bear got Pernell McPhee
Willis retiring may have more to do with a bad toe than just wanting to leave the game. Alledgedly/supposedly he has the same kind of toe issue that forced Deion Sanders from the game, per several comments in the PFT story on it. Not sure if true, just what I read earlier this morning.
It's possible, but when your source is "comments in the PFT" I have a really hard time believing it.
I think Facebook has more credibility. Friendster rumor has Mike Wahle restructuring his contract to stay with the Packers.
Here's the thing I like about Emery.....oh, wait.
From CSN Chicago. Arguably B***s best defender last season.
@JenLada: Hearing the Redskins are closing in on a 4 year deal with DT Stephen Paea.
@AdamSchefter: Former Packers LB A.J. Hawk is in Cincinnati today, visiting the Bengals.
AJ doesn't have enough arrests to play for Cincy.

Barry Sanders retirement still floors me 17 years later.

But also hadn't done much leading up to his contract year, not in an ascending way either. He's a gamble.

Why don't more FA's choose the Packers ?
West Virgina has less NFLers than South Dakota. Whodathunkit
Hmmm.
@AdamSchefter: Saints officially released LB Curtis Lofton today.
Maclin is from Missouri and went to Mizzou. Plus was drafted by and played for Andy Reid.
Know all that, but c'mon, Alex Smith is a WR killer. All he does is check-down and play scared . Maclin's numbers are going to suffer.
Might be first good move by Chip this cycle.
@RapSheet: The #Eagles are closing in on a deal for pass-rusher Brandon Graham, source said. Locking up one of their own.
@RapSheet: The #Eagles signed Brandon Graham to a 4-year deal worth $26M, source said. He gets $14M guaranteed
No Justin Smith? No Patrick Willis? No Frank Gore? Mike Iupati is probably gone, too. The 49ers are going to be so bad next year, 3-13 level bad. I'm going to enjoy every single minute of it. The Packers will beat them by 30+ points out in Santa Clara. I hope that Collie Kaeperdink doesn't manage to get himself benched before that game. I'll probably be going to that one, and I have a desperate need to see him take a world class beating after witnessing that disaster at Candlestick.
Smert cash management provides lots of options.
@TomPelissero: #Patriots front-loaded Devin McCourty's 5-year, $45.7M contract. He gets $18M in Year 1. Helps them toward cash spending floor.
Can't believe you knuckle heads aren't more excited about Tolzien.

Tolzien is a hard worker, studies hard. NFL arm. We would have won the Seattle game if he started instead of Rodgers.

A couple of items:
@jthom1: Rams release Scott Wells, Jake Long.
@AdamSchefter: 49ers free-agent G Mike Iupati has told people he plans to sign with the Arizona Cardinals, per sources. Iupati vs. SF DT Darnell Dockett.
Wells' last rodeo, IMO, he breaks too easily now. Very good Packer, but Ted made the right call when he did.
Jake Long released? What's up with that?
On Iupati, he and Bulaga have been the supposed OL targets for Buffalo. His going to Arizona is not necessarily good for GB.
EDIT:
@nwagoner: Rams have informed OT Jake Long and C Scott Wells of their release. Moves save the team about $12 million in salary-cap space.
@RapSheet: The #Rams have released OT Jake Long, source said. Theyâll continue to discuss options with him as he rehabs.
