Trevathan's future cap numbers don't appear to be much of a concern at all.  3.35 million in 2017 would only represent about 2% of a team's cap space.  If he's cut after 2017 the rest of the signing bonus would likely be spread over 2018 and 2019 (1.25 million each season).  That would represent around 0.66 to 0.70 percent of the team's cap space.

Trevathan is an proven full-time NFL starter, started 32 of the 34 games he played in over the last three seasons.  Perry started one game last year and over the last three years Perry started 11 of the 40 games he played in.  Folks have the Perry hard-on right now because Thompson signed him, but there are still serious doubts about his ability to be a full-time starter when he sat behind Neal in 94% of the team's regular season games last year.  Defensive staff would have to be a bunch of dummies if Perry is indeed a plus-NFL starting OLB, but anything is possible with the personnel blunders committed by the offensive staff last year.

Thompson probably had no interest in Trevathan for one reason, he'd lose the fifth round compensatory pick he's probably going to get back for the loss of Heyward.

Players "proven" themselves on one team does mean it's a guarantee he will be as effective with another team. With Ted's success with mid-round picks, it's not unrealistic to think he could get more, in the long run, out of a 5th round compensatory pick than a FA. Hell Trevathan was a 6th round pick, it's not crazy to believe you could be better off with even a low round pick than a FA.

As for Perry, I'm glad to see him back because I think he's a really talented player. When he's been healthy and available he's been pretty solid. His run D is stout and he's flashed ability to rush the QB (3.5 sacks in the playoffs). Trevathan/Perry is an apples/oranges discussion because they play very different positions with very different salary demands...you might as well also compare Trevathan/Starks or Trevathan/Taylor.

Maybe see how the draft plays out before we question the FA's Ted did or didn't sign?

As was linked in previous pages, TT hasn't taken an ILB in rounds 1-3 except Abdul Hodge in 2006. I think it's fair to say he doesn't value the position that highly. Now maybe that changes in 2016 but a fairly long history says he won't.

RGIII.....Kaepernick.....Manziel......all the same QB on the field.  I forgot who wrote it but there was a very good article on MMQB (definitely not Peter King, maybe Andy Benoit?) on why RGIII and Kaepernick are on slippery slope leading out of the NFL.  They just don't understand the basics of playing QB, like 3 vs. 5 vs. 7 steps drops, route timing, anticipating WR route adjustments based on the defense, climbing the ladder in the pocket, etc.  Basics that any offense requires a QB to understand.

But good luck Browns, I'm sure you'll turn around RGIII's career.
