Cap numbers for Danny Trevathan & Ladarius Green in '16 are about the same as cap numbers for Perry, Taylor & Starks in '16. Interesting. |
Misleading to look at 2016 only. Bakhtiari/Sitton/Lang among others are core guys and potentially expensive re-signs after this season. But when you've an ax to grind like Rodney facts are stupid things.
For all we know TT and the organization may not be as enamored with either Green or Trevathan as many Packer fans apparently are. Impossible to say exactly what went into their decision making process but I continue to believe that the best FA moves are usually the ones not made.
Trevathan's future cap numbers don't appear to be much of a concern at all. 3.35 million in 2017 would only represent about 2% of a team's cap space. If he's cut after 2017 the rest of the signing bonus would likely be spread over 2018 and 2019 (1.25 million each season). That would represent around 0.66 to 0.70 percent of the team's cap space.
Trevathan is an proven full-time NFL starter, started 32 of the 34 games he played in over the last three seasons. Perry started one game last year and over the last three years Perry started 11 of the 40 games he played in. Folks have the Perry hard-on right now because Thompson signed him, but there are still serious doubts about his ability to be a full-time starter when he sat behind Neal in 94% of the team's regular season games last year. Defensive staff would have to be a bunch of dummies if Perry is indeed a plus-NFL starting OLB, but anything is possible with the personnel blunders committed by the offensive staff last year.
Thompson probably had no interest in Trevathan for one reason, he'd lose the fifth round compensatory pick he's probably going to get back for the loss of Heyward.
Perhaps TT is also uncomfortable and has concerns with Trevathan's injury history.
Maybe see how the draft plays out before we question the FA's Ted did or didn't sign?
A) Amen to all the Perry hard on's over here. People are gushing way, way to much about that guy.
2) Of course the defensive staff are a bunch of dummies. We've know that for years now.
*) Ted should have signed Trevathan on his 40 time alone
I don't have a hard on for any man.
Players "proven" themselves on one team does mean it's a guarantee he will be as effective with another team. With Ted's success with mid-round picks, it's not unrealistic to think he could get more, in the long run, out of a 5th round compensatory pick than a FA. Hell Trevathan was a 6th round pick, it's not crazy to believe you could be better off with even a low round pick than a FA.
As for Perry, I'm glad to see him back because I think he's a really talented player. When he's been healthy and available he's been pretty solid. His run D is stout and he's flashed ability to rush the QB (3.5 sacks in the playoffs). Trevathan/Perry is an apples/oranges discussion because they play very different positions with very different salary demands...you might as well also compare Trevathan/Starks or Trevathan/Taylor.
Ted has tried for 10 years to find a good ILB in the middle and late rounds, and aside from Desmond Bishop, it hasn't happened yet.
As was linked in previous pages, TT hasn't taken an ILB in rounds 1-3 except Abdul Hodge in 2006. I think it's fair to say he doesn't value the position that highly. Now maybe that changes in 2016 but a fairly long history says he won't.
Best Football Player Available at #27 most likely isn't an ILB.

Chip leaves town and they cut the racist? Hmmm!
Essentially a one year deal with an option.

Gamblers fallacy...then we must be due.
@AdamSchefter: Former Redskins' RB Alfred Morris is signing with the Dallas Cowboys, per source. Morris usually abused Cowboys; now will play for them.
That leaves WAS with wot at RB?
Matt Jones, a younger, faster Morris who can also catch the ball.
Alfred Morris is a solid ZBS runner, but he has about as many NFL catches as I do.
Wow...that's ummmm, a lot there.... Herschel Walker
That's different & interesting.
geeze, that'll get Pistol GB all wound up
I think Coach is taking his Game Of Thrones addiction a bit far. This was the Annual NFL Coaches picture, not GotCon. Hodor.
Hodor.
Looks like the Saviors from Walking Dead

Naw, that was Henry telling me to go **** myself that did that.
Whatever, I called him a pindick in response and he let it ride so I consider that one closed.
lol
@AdamSchefter: Sean Payton has agreed with the Saints on a 5-year contract extension worth in excess of $45M, per @Edwerderespn.

@AdamSchefter: Cleveland is expected to reach agreement with former Redskins' QB Robert Griffin III today, per team source. Griffin III to be a Brown.
RGIII.....Kaepernick.....Manziel......all the same QB on the field. I forgot who wrote it but there was a very good article on MMQB (definitely not Peter King, maybe Andy Benoit?) on why RGIII and Kaepernick are on slippery slope leading out of the NFL. They just don't understand the basics of playing QB, like 3 vs. 5 vs. 7 steps drops, route timing, anticipating WR route adjustments based on the defense, climbing the ladder in the pocket, etc. Basics that any offense requires a QB to understand.
But good luck Browns, I'm sure you'll turn around RGIII's career.
