Whatever you or I think about Love,  tomorrow’s game is a big freakin deal.
For him and the franchise.

Not so sure about that
The 3rd preseason game with 35 guys sitting out is now a referendum on the future QB and the franchise ?

Shirley you jest

Spoiler Alert: Nothing will be decided tomorrow evening, nor should it be.

You hang with him until he stops getting better. He was always gonna be a developmental project, he's working with MLF, AR and Tom Clemens ( QB savant) and he's progressing in his craft. Hopefully he has an excellent showing in KC - but his status inside of 1265 doesn't hinge on Thursday night.

Gute & MLF bet their livelihoods on this dude and they're gonna see it through - even if the omniscient fans already know better.

Just as the Packers weren't totally sure about AR until her came in for an injured Favre vs. Cowboys and played well.... they are not going to be sure about Love until he can play well vs. NFL starters.

And also when Jordan Love gets to consistently practice with and play in front of his own #1 starters. Something he’s had very little opportunity to do thus far.

I’ve been a tough critic of Love, not showing he’s got that β€œit” factor.  The only evidence we have on what he might become is his play on the field.  It hasn’t been spectacular, nothing to indicate he’s the future of the franchise, but he’s faced some unusual circumstances to get where he is, so I think he gets a bit of a break.  Against KC last year, with most of the starters, he looked like a deer in the headlights.  However, last week’s preseason game was the best I’ve seen him play yet.  I thought he looked much more comfortable in the pocket, and he really has some nice touch on the deep balls that even Rodgers doesn’t have.  Hopefully it’s the start of a turnaround for the kid.  He threw a really pretty pass to Doubs that should have been caught, and his decision-making was much better.  I’m rooting for him to be the next in line, because AR’s not going to play forever and it’s the devil we know.  I really think Clements has made a difference for his fundamentals, obviously Love has the physical talent.  I hope he does well in KC, though he’s still playing with backups.  It’s going to be a tough decision next year, especially with a $20M price tag.  I think for that reason, we keep the QB’s this year with Etling in case we can’t get a decent deal done with Love.  The tough part for the Packers is that they won’t get a chance to see Love’s full potential before they have to make that decision next season.

You guys are funny.  This is year 3.  He doesn’t look the part and we are posting videos of a few errant throws from Rodgers to feel better about it.  There is always an excuse.   He doesn’t look like Herbert, or some other limited experience guy, because of X.   It’s unfair to expect him to play like Wilson because of X.

Perhaps, he doesn’t look the part because he isn’t?   That is equally probable as any excuse of the week we have today.

Gute took a shot and it’s looking like he missed.  It happens.  Good for him for having the stones to do that.  Problem is we are in year 3 and the camp body QB still plays better than him.

No, what’s funny is you can’t remember Rodgers’ play before that game in Dallas, and like all the people who bitched and moaned about Rodgers during his first FOUR years, you’ll piss off if Love continues to make strides.

You want Love to fail so badly that I can see the drool in the corners of your mouth just from this post.

from Ty Dunne at Go Long TD
He's got a Q&A with Jordan Love's former coach and current QB whisperer Steve Calhoun. Some interesting stuff in here

He can be one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL

Something we can check out during the game this evening

"...And the other thing β€” I talked to Coach LaFleur about it at the Combine a year ago β€” was Jordan’s balance as he’s delivering the football. One of the things we both noticed was when he plants his left foot, his left heel doesn’t come down on the ground. So he’s throwing the ball... on the ball of his foot. It’s hard to have balance on your delivery when you’re transferring weight to your front foot if your left foot’s not flat on the ground. That causes balance issues. And if there’s no balance, there’s no accuracy. So my whole thing was always β€” through this offseason and last year β€” β€œHey, flat left foot. Flat left foot. Flat left foot.”

@Thunderbird posted:

That is so weird.  I didn't think it was possible to not plant your front foot completely, unless you're trying to put a light touch on the ball.

It is. Yet so many QB’s (including Rodgers) have the ability to throw off balance. The great ones can be accurate doing so. But I am of the opinion that the QB must master the basics first before he tries the fancy stuff.

Wooooo !!!

Like we three are the only ones here to be critical of Love?  Please.  To be fair, the rest of my post pointed out how good he looked in the last preseason game, the hope that he'll continue to develop in that direction, and the desire to succeed enough that we can have confidence he can be the future.  He needs to generate that confidence given how much he's going to cost next year, and tonight's his (hopefully) last opportunity before then to show what he has.  Whether he's had "enough time" or "opportunity" are moot points.  They'll have to make a decision based on what he's shown.  They're not going to pay him $20M to be a backup, so they either get him to sign a reasonable deal or he leaves.  Depends on what they see in him and whether he thinks there's an opportunity to start sooner/make more money somewhere else.

And also to be fair, he didn't look like he had much promise before last week.  I hope he does well tonight - it'll be interesting to see if he can stack success.

Nailed it.   I want the team I root for to have to go through a QB search every other year like the Bears and so many other teams.

..or... and I know this is crazy..  My opinion doesn't align with yours.   GASP!

Agree. Some folks are getting awfully touchy if there is any criticism of Love at all. I hope he is a great success. He hasn't shown a lot to indicate that this will be the case yet.....

Not enough..  You must kneel at the altar and only speak praise of the Supreme Leader.   Love played golf once, shot a 19 for the round and quit the game out of boredom.

I’d say, I’ve seen enough improvement from Love that I feel a little bit less hopeless about him now than I did when watching him last year.

It is concerning though just how turnover prone he’s been in these 1st 3 years.  That’s typically the deciding factor in success as a QB.  At least last week he was turnover free, so that was a positive that hopefully he can build on.

He’s got some talent but still has an awful lot of rough edges.  Who knows, with a full year of NFL starting experience maybe he can clean some of that up.  But you’d like to see him really clean it up in practice and these exhibitions first which he hasn’t totally done just yet.

My only real complaint of Love is he just didn't look ready when he got to play vs the Chefs and Lions in 2021. Preseason has been some good and some not so good which is pretty typical of any preseason game given what you are usually surrounded with.

But I still have a really hard time bitching about the turnovers in the SF game. He hit a receiver in the facemask and that turned into an INT. Threw a less than perfect pass that the WR caught and then the ball was lost in a tumble. Made a bad decision while Rodgers was running a lazy route but that one is something you can blame the QB for.

You aren't going to know if he's the real deal until he gets some considerable regular season playing time. Hard to say if that's going to happen before his contract expires.

My guess is no recent QB has developed after 3 seasons because no recent QB has been given 3 years to develop.  They start at some point in year 2 then either fail or succeed.  How many of those QBs who failed in year 2 may have succeeded if they didn't play until year 4?

True, it's a unique situation to be such a high pick and not play because you're behind a HOF'er.

Good points.  Truth is - without throwing all kinds of pissy emotions in - you can only go with that you see.  He can be a top NFL QB, or he can just as easily be on someone's PS next year.  He hasn't had a lot of opportunity to show what he can do, and he faced some unfortunate circumstances his first year, but during the time he's had to show what he can do (including starting against the Chiefs), there's just been no reason to believe he could be an NFL starter.  He's not going to get experience with the #1's unless AR is injured, before it's time to decide what to do with him - or he decides for himself.  Nobody's clamoring to make a deal for him, so I'm guessing the rest of the NFL sees what we're seeing.

Last week was the only time, at least IMHO, he did anything to indicate he can be a starter.  And that's going to be the last time he gets an opportunity (hopefully) to show what he can do before he's owed $20M next season.  It is what it is.
