From the Silverstein article cited above:

The Packers have been making moves that will create salary cap room so they have the option of being a player in free agency. They are likely to pursue a safety and potentially players at other positions. In addition, they have several of their own free agents they want to re-sign, such as cornerback/returner Keisean Nixon, linebacker Eric Wilson and tight end Tyler Davis.

So, if you gave the Browns the choice now would they....

1. Pay Baker Mayfield about 30-million over the next 3 years and have been able to use 1st and 4th round picks in 2022, 1st and 3rd round picks in 2023, and 1st and 4th round picks in 2024.

or

2. Pay Deshaun Watson 46 million, fully guaranteed, for each the next 3 seasons? Watson's dead cap figures for the next three years are 200 million, 136 million, and 76 million, so he isn't going there.

And Russ ends up a Steeler.  Signs a 1 year deal, likely for the minimum due to the guaranteed money Denver owes him. Probably the best situation for him to play his best, we'll see if he can turn it around so he can sign a legit deal next offseason (he'll be 36). Also the highest risk - Steelers made the playoffs with Pickett, Rudolph, and Trubisky at QB. If they miss the playoffs this year....does Russ get the blame?

Thing about Russ - he's an awful QB at $40m per year.  But he's a pretty option at the vet minimum.

The going rate for most QBs seems to be around $30M-$35M per year. Elite QBs (excluding Watson) are closer to $40M/year. I expect Cousins will be between those numbers.

Also, the Chefs resigned Chris Jones to a 5 year/$160M contract with $95M guaranteed over the first 3 years. I mention this because of the future impact it could have on the Packers. I don't think they have a DT on the roster that would command that kind of money, but it could take $25M-$30M/year to sign an elite one.
FWIW, Kenny Clark is in the last year of his deal. His last contract was 4 years/$70M with $34M guaranteed. I don't think he could get Jones-type money, but assuming the Packers want to keep him, it could cost between $20M-$25M/year (average) and a $50M-$60M guarantee.

Meanwhile, here in MN, everyone is clutching their pearls wondering what Cousins is going to do.

With all the hubbub surrounding Kark, and viking fans wringing their hands over it, maybe they won't notice true football fans sneaking into the Stapler to hack that God awful horn of theirs, so it blares "GO PACK, GO!!! when it is activated. There has to be some fan in Green and Gold that can do it! LOL!

The problem with Atlanta is they are picking 8th so thereโ€™s no way the top 3 QBs (Williams, Maye, Daniels) will be there.  Atlanta does have two 2nd round picks but they need to get to 3 to be assured of one of those guys and I donโ€™t think a couple of 2s would do it.

So, they would probably be better off keeping their picks and signing a guy like Kark even if it means overpaying for him.  Drake London and Bijan Robinson are dirt cheap the next 2-3 seasons and Kyle Pitts is still affordable this season before a 5th year option in 2025.

With a competent QB the Falcons are a playoff team in 2023 and could be the divisional favorite in 2024.

He will begin "formal" discussions with Atlanta once the "legal" tampering window opens.

The fact he started building a house there a few months ago suggests that this might be one of those situations where a very detailed contract is already in place. The discussions will lead to an announcement within 3-4 hours that they've agreed to him going there "in principle" and then they'll wait 24 hours or so to release the details of the contract.

Atlanta will probably win 10-11 games next year in that division. Kirk is a very good, but not elite, QB.

The Falcons will make the playoffs and then probably lose when Kirk dumps the ball down on 3rd and long about 5 times. Although, Bijan Robinson and Kyle Pitts are the types of guys that turn dump offs into big plays.

As a reminder, this is also the time GB gets labeled as "very interested" in a number of players with NFL agents knowing full well no one from 1265 will balk at any of these rumors/reports and dispute them.

So let's always take a grain of salt with some of these reports. Having said that, getting McKinney would be a major get for the Pack.
