I was confident with what we had after Jordy went down, but I am far more so now. Pretty simple. We are bringing back a guy with 7 successful years in our system, playing at a high level. Zero downside. All positive, and it makes our team better.

By signing Jones, the dropoff in talent after losing Jordy also was lessened at WR, by quite a bit.

Mike Francesa just said he expects big things from Montgomery this season.

I do not believe you have been at this forum during game threads.

That said, you shall never receive one of these from me.....

Circle of life.

@AaronWilson_NFL: Giants signed Myles White to practice squad.

@TeddieLacy: So Pack cuts White to fit Jones, Giants cut Jones and sign White?

I think something that is lost in this discussion is the severity of Randall Cobb's shoulder injury. If you consider the staff may want to take their time getting Cobb back onto the field playing regular minutes, the James Jones signing was a godsend.

When we saw reports of Adams, Jones and Montgomery working 3 WR sets, I don't think any of us figured Cobb was out of that picture, but maybe he was. I assumed it was Jones and Monty switching at the #3 WR.

Wouldn't hurt for the Packers to take their time with Cobb if need be. Add to that, the Montgomery pick is looking pretty damn good right now as well. We might see more of him than any of us imagined v. CHI.

Cobb will be out there but I get your point.

Last report I saw was it was a mild injury with limited chance of re-injury.  Cobby will be there when the bullets fly.

I think working Monty into the starting rotation is as much getting him acclimated faster because he and Jones essentially have to cover Jordy's production.

Even just in terms of Cobb generally speaking. Smaller framed guy, works the slot. TT and MM have to be concerned about Cobb's health over the course of a season. This is where Nelson's injury also plays a factor.

Hopefully Cobb's healthy and plays in the opener, but adding to your depth with an experienced guy like Jones gives you some cushion if Cobb gets nicked during the long season.

Hopefully TE steps up and takes some of those catches as well.

while I appreciate optimism, and while I hope you are correct, and I want to believe, I'm tempering everything until I see the first game.  GPG!

it looks good on paper so far but...

I worry less about the Offense than the Defense. I expect Forte to make large gains on us with our depleted D-line and the loss of MB. Also I expect that the Bears will use Forte the same way that the Eagles did and pick on Barrington with the short pass with YAC to follow because Ha Ha is not that great of an open field tackler.

What happened to Hayward? You mean Burnett?

The bears will use Forte early and often, but I wouldn't take too much from the Philly game. Chip game plans and runs his offense vs vanilla D in preseason and it works. In the real games, those same simple plays won't work because the Packers won't be playing vanilla defense.

You wanna see a Chip Kelly offense vs a Capers defense ? November 16th, 2014

The game was over at the end of the 1st quarter. But everybody forgets that one and instead uses the preseason farce as some sort of measuring stick

Scroll down to the Win Probability Chart and you'll see:

The Packers defense handled the Eagles super-duper offense just fine. And that was with Hawk and Jones manning the middle

This will seem like a new defense, at least not the one you might be thinking of to start the season last year. I think we will be fine both sides of the ball. Take some lumps on D with the new players, but nothing we can't overcome. And, those lumps will only carry through the first 6 games or so. Maybe, maybe, we lose a couple of those as a result.

Offense is a machine, and we should put a lot of teams back on their heels, throwing to catch up, into our ballhawking secondary. Jones will be a big help in keeping that machine rolling. This will be fun to see.

Time for me to eat some crow.  I never expected the performance James Jones had on Sunday.  I hope he will be able to continue it over the next few weeks while Cobb heals.  Pleasantly surprised and I was wrong.

Same for me GC. Didn't think it fit the MO of Thompson, seems he usually opts to let his younger talent go through growing pains rather than sign a veteran stopgap. I wasn't sure why both the Raiders and Giants would let him walk when neither team is necessarily deep at WR, but I'm sure glad they did! Rodgers definitely has full trust in him which is crucial because he doesn't seem like he's 100% there yet with Adams and co.
I don't think it's a matter of "not being there" with the other guys.

Rodgers said it in the post-game... The Bears were rolling coverage to Adams/Cobb, and that left Jones/Rodgers in several one-ones. They were challenging them to throw elsewhere, and #12 made them pay by either pinpointing an seemingly impossible pass or running for chunks himself.

That's why he's the best- his counter is almost always the deciding factor in a game. The Packers scored on 5 possessions out of 7 (not counting the kneel downs). That's an incredible amount of efficiency in a game that any lesser QB might not have been able to win. If the Bears play this way the rest of the year, and have the same ratio, they be a lot better than people thought they woukd be, including me.

They should easily be better than last year but they also sprang a lot of suprises on D yesterday because of the new scheme and Fangio.  Fangio is an excellent DC (sucks the bears got him) and will improve that side of the ball but things will get more challenging for them when teams get more tape on them and can identify tendencies.

I underestimated Jones' value as a possession receiver.  He obviously has AR's trust and had fingers like glue yesterday.  And on the second TD at least, he was wide open, so he can run better than I thought too.

So I hereby eat crow and apologize for any butt-hurt I may have caused.

At least it was a good thing to be wrong about.  Rodgers loves to have that trust with his receivers.  He demonstrated that yesterday.  Great pick up for Green Bay.  It is scary to say, but this offense is not going to miss a beat without Jordy. They looked like a well oiled machine, once again.  It will only get better.  It is going to be fun to watch.

Montgomery only had one offensive snap yesterday. Pretty obvious the organization doesn't and didn't feel he was prepared for the #3 role. Thought JJ would get significant snaps but was surprised at how much he did play.

AR and the offense were extremely efficient but that won't always be the case and the defense has to play better and carry their weight.

No, but I won't apologize for being in his camp before Jones became available either. I personally don't think he deserved the dissing he got.  He had like 1 drop to go with 17 catches in the pre-season.  Pre-season or not, I will never discredit a guy for producing (see previous post), and it is impossible to say what he could have done with AR throwing to him.  Anyway it's academic.

James Jones is worth more to the Packers than any other team in the NFL & it kills them all! It's a beautiful thing....

The Vikings are soooooo jealous they didn't sign JJ to GB West!

Glad to see the classy JJ back in GB. I think he was the security blanket AR needed after Jordy went down and Cobb isn't quite himself yet (although, a great catch on the TD!). Now AR can work in Adams and the other guys knowing his has steady JJ to go to. It also gives the young WRs another vet to emulate. JJ doesn't have blazing speed, but his concentration and knowing how to get open are worth gold -- and green! Montgomery, et al, now need to make the most of their opportunities to learn...

Sounds similar to Matt Flynn.

I think it remarkable that it's happened at least twice. Says a lot about the Packers as an organization, I believe.
