We are a weird spoiled group
They needed 66

Saying the Packers need a WR is not saying they are average.
They need a CONSISTENT number 2.
Fact. I don't give a shit where that player comes from but it is a need.
You should fear every other WR not named Adams may very likely drop the fucking ball on any particular pass.
Adamβs was the only one to drop a pass in the NFCC. Are we still going to pretend that these WRs cost us the game?
I'm not talking about the NFCC, I'm talking about the whole season.
This team does not have a #2 WR, it would be nice to have one.
Yes, but wouldn't you rather have a #2 CB instead?
I didn't realize it was one or the other.
Lazard is a lot better than you give him credit for being. Rodgers had 124 rating when targeting Lazard and despite drops still came up with some pretty clutch catches against good defenses. I think his blocking alone allows for so much flexibility. I donβt think we need a β2β, if anything we need a Randall Cobb in the slot and a healthy FB (which we already have), both of which would stress defenses even harder. We could have an equally productive offense with this same group of personnel in β21.
Getting back to the discussion on Defensive Coordinator, I don't understand why Joe Barry is getting play. The defensive rankings for teams under his leadership were horrendous. Pass!
Because coaching is a boys club and Barry is Rod Marinelliβs son in law. I think his dad was an NFL coach as well, those guys get a million chances. It at least gets you an interview. Barry would be a disappointing option both because he has a poor track record but also because this is an opportunity to find a younger fresher voice. Hiring Barry means weβre doing this coaching search again in 3 years.
Like last year, itβs a deep draft for quality WRs. Not so much for DBs. Yes the Packers should look at both positions, but itβs possible they could address in FA as well.
X4 is interesting because we pound on MVS (rightfully so at times) but Lazard gets a pass. Why? Because Rodgers talked him up?
MVS has big play speed and weβve seen that at times with RAC and deep throws downfield. Thatβs an important aspect in this offense because you have to watch the guy if you are playing defense.
Lazard is a nice story and all, but heβs not elite at anything and has a tough time separating and getting open. If we think thatβs what a #2 WR is then we need to recalibrate expectations.
In a perfect world, they would have drafted that guy in 2020 but did not. I hope they donβt make the same mistake again this year. There will be some very good WR prospects there in R1 and I highlighted Rondale Moore only because he adds a playmaking element in the slot and special teams that they havenβt had since Randall Cobb was here. Adding a guy like that makes them so much more difficult to defend because you have to pay attention to him on every play. Lazard and ESB are not those type of players and threats.
As for CB, it will be really interesting to see what they do with King. Heβs played pretty well this year until the Tampa game. I doubt some team is likely to throw big money at him so itβs possible he returns. Doesnβt mean that they donβt need to add another CB or two to fill a nickel or dime role, but I wouldnβt rule out King returning.
Packers have the following defensive coordinator interviews set for today and tomorrow, per sources: Jim Leonhard (Wisconsin DC), Chris Kiffin (Browns DL), Ryan Nielson (Saints DL/assistant HC), Matt Burke (Eagles DL/run game coordinator) and internal candidate Jerry Gray (Packers DBs). So far, theyβve interviewed Joe Barry (Chargers defensive passing game coordinator), Chris Harris (Washington DB coach), Ejiro Evero (Rams safeties coach) and Bob Sutton (Falcons senior assistant).
Listening to LaFleur yesterday and throughout the season it appears he will hire based on perceived personality, energy level, rather than experience or scheme. He has made reference several times to "energy", "swarming to the ball", etc. throughout the season. Could be that he felt Pettine's personality did not lend itself to forming that type of defense. Old coaching adage that the team takes on the personality of the coach. Can the new DC; 1) Motivate 2) Teach 3) Scheme. In all jobs involving leadership, where the predecessor is not retained, those in power typically look for in candidates what they thought the previous person lacked. I am sure that some of why LaFleur was hired was that he was "not McCarthy", even though on paper nothing about him would tell you why he got the job. It seems like the same thing may happen with this situation.

Okay, I was with you until this. King was bad all year. Several grading sites (PFF, player profile, espn analytics) have him as one of the worst corners in the league this season. https://www.acmepackingcompany...oundary-corner-blues I didn't like how he played, his demeanor, his interviews, none of it.
Leonhard please
I will be surprised if the Packers' defense is better next year with a new co-ordinator.
There were 4 back breaking plays in the NFCCG. 3 came from the offense- 1 each by their 'studs'. The defense' lapse came from a known weak link.
defense does not have to be complicated, matter of fact, with this group, easy is better. normally, would agree with 'takes a couple years to adapt to the system' but if its an easy system, see qb -> get qb, it could catch right off...the coordinator is the key, smartest guy in the room (we already have one in mlf - tends to overthink) will take some time, adapts to what he has, could catch fire right off.
"X4 is interesting because we pound on MVS (rightfully so at times) but Lazard gets a pass. Why? Because Rodgers talked him up? "
Couple reasons.
One, Lazard was undrafted and not expected to rise to this level so he is your blue collar hard working WI guy (but from Iowa, close enough). Compare that to MVS who gets lumped in with the Moore and is viewed as 3rd round pick while he was actually a 5th. Fun fact, JK Scott was drafted in front of MVS.
Two, when MVS makes a mistake, it's glaring. A dropped pass on a sure thing TD because he just boat raced the CB sticks in your head more than a drop on a 6 yard hitch. Nevermind that he has the skillset to get 5 yard cushion on that go route.
Three, up until the NFCC game, Lazard shined in big games while MVS folded. I was really encouraged for his future after the game when he was the main bright spot on the offense for an otherwise gloomy day.
All that said, I still think Lazard is the better WR. I don't see MVS overcoming his drop issues and while he can create separation better, I think Lazard is more sure handed. Lazard is also a an elite blocker for the position and that plays really well into this offense.
I'm willing to do a pagan sacrifice to the football gods for Leonhard to be the selection.
Lazard gets more out of his athletic ability than MVS does, that is why he gets a "pass'.

Plenty of missed opportunities from the offense, but the Bucs were 6-7 on third down in the first half, and the one miss was because of a drop.
5 of those first downs came via the pass, 4 of which were completed on King or Sullivan.
Weak links, most teams have them. It is up to the coaches to hide them, disguise them and/or give them help.
Kris Richard certainly passes the "bring the juice" test...
A lot of love for Jim. But at the same time, A LOT of anxiety from Badger fans losing Leonhard is disastrous for the Badgers.
The best candidate - and there's not a close second - is Leonhard. The rest either have no experience calling plays (Kiffin, Neilsen, Harris, and Evero) or are former DCs because they performed poorly at the job (Gray, Barry, Burke, and Sutton). https://t.co/BD1M1xCbDE

Take a look at the Badgers that have been drafted from his D. In the past 4 years you got two players who contribute to an NLF team, yet the D is consistently one of the best in the Nation.
EDIT - 3 players, Van Ginkle is a starter.

And most were on 3rd and long. Dammit, if only we had a #2 WR.
@PackerBoi
Lose him now, or lose him later. Leonhard is a rising star, only a matter of time before he moves up. Would you rather him be a Packer or go to another Big 10 school as HC?
I have no problem if they choose Leonhard, I am just speaking for a lot of fans who called into local sports radio here complaining the Packers would be stealing from WI to make him DC.
And I completely agree, if the Packers don't make this move, eventually someone will. Including a team like the Lions or Bears. So might as well be the Packers (if MLF feels he's the best for the job).
Never ended up speaking with LaFleur about the #Packers DC job, which is a bit surprising. https://t.co/xSeWlWfQQd

LaFleur said he was going to beat the bushes to make sure he got a full view of the landscape and he is. Nothing wrong with covering all your bases. Depends a lot on the philosophy you want. Gray or Evero, to me, are the logical choices given all considerations, but stay tuned. https://t.co/7B3kvLMK0l

If Gute / MLF hire Leonhard, I might stop crying about TT passing on TJ.
