Caldwell would be a hilarious hire.
Good hire if Peyton comes with him.

Whisenhunt to the Titans.
Perfect.
Keep him out of the Lions den.
I thought the Lions was supposed to be the #1 job available to all coaching candidates?
Lovie Smith, Wiz and others seem to disagree.
Lions fans let down.
Again.
lol way to go Mayhew you cant win even when the lions dont play. Now your stuck with losers caldwell or muchak loser. Jeez I cant believe how they let this happen if i was Ford i would fire the front office for letting this happen. Caldwel couldnt win without Manning 2 and 14 season well guess what We dont have Manning here so if he is hired expect a losing season waaaa wahhhhh
That was my first thought, too, Henry.
I see a lot of similarities between Flacco and Stafford.
Average defense. Check
No development of your ILBers. Check
Winston Moss is a candidate for the DC job w/Whisenhunt in TEN.
The Packers have the right to turn down interviews for a lateral position switch of an assistant HC, but its not completely verboten. Then can acquiesce if they choose to go in another direction
It's official, Caldwell is the new Lions coach
Detroit Lions are hiring Jim Caldwell as their head coach, per a league source.

A laid-back players coach? Perfect.
Thanks, Detoilet!
Wayne Fontes redux.
If Moss's contract expired this year the Pack cant stop him from leaving. Also, They can OK an interview and let him leave IF he's under contract or deny it.
Personally, I dont see that Moss did anything special with our ILB's so have been confused about any interest in him by other teams. He seems more like a trusted confidant to MM than an exceptional position coach, JMHO.
Go, Moss.
And take Hawk and Jones with you.
Wow, the Lions are a train wreck.

LMAO!!! WOOOHOOO!!!!!
Best NFL news I've heard this month. 2nd place being Cutlers contract!
Somebody up there likes us!
yikes, thats a terrible hire for Detroit.
he was 12-52 here at WAke Forest and ~.500 with the Colts.
how does that guy get a head NFL gig?
"I don't have any doubt that Jim is a fine coach. I think he would make a great position coach, maybe a coordinator."
You know one reason..... but I won't say it.
He's a snazzy dresser?
He's friends with Tony Dungy?
He's friends with Tony Dungy?
Dungy has a mentoring relationship with Caldwell. I have a book by Dungy in which Dungy states that fact.
Maybe they thought if they brought in another guy named Coach Jim the players wouldn't notice.
with the Caldwell hiring and Cutler's extension, it appears there are a lot more NFC North Division Championships in the making for the GBP! too funny
Caldwell...good guy...but not the best coach around for detoilet.
If you wonder how he gets a job....bump his record up with the great Whisenhut.
In Whisenhunt's defense, he followed the great Dennis Green while Caldwell took over Dungy.
I'll play devil's advocate here: I don't think Caldwell is as bad as some of you may think. He was the unfortunate coach for the "Suck-for-Luck" regime which did him no favors with a washed up Kerry Collins and low draft pick Curtis Painter. The Colts obviously struggled without Manning, but the Packers were looking pretty poor without Rodgers until they tried their 3rd backup in Flynn. Not having a capable QB can doom any team (see Minnesota).
With the Lions, Caldwell will have a decent QB, decent RB, the best WR in football, an up-and-coming TE, and a stout front 7 on defense.
He's terrible. He was head coach of a team that was 14-0 and decided to kiss a 16-0 campaign goodbye. Their reasoning was that they only cared about winning Super Bowls. They didn't win the Super Bowl that year either, so a lot of good it did them.
The next year they were playing the Jets, again, in the playoffs. Jets were driving late for a winning field goal. They had the ball around the 35 or 40 yard line and ran it up the middle, settling for a long field goal try. At the time the Jets had 1 timeout left. So they were going to let the clock run down and kick a 50+ yarder to win it. Surely no gimme. Caldwell calls timeout! That allowed the Jets to run a legit play, they had like a 20 yard pass and the long field goal turned into a chip shot and the Colts lost. It was one of the bigger coaching blunders I have ever seen. Just mind numbingly stupid.
Plus he had a horrible record as a HC at Wake Forest, as someone already mentioned.
There must be something else going on with the Lions that with the list of people available they had to settle for Jim Caldwell.
Caldwell is a bad fit for the Lions job for the exact reason given by JJSD: A laid-back players' coach is the wrong choice to instill discipline and change the culture of a talented-but-underachieving team like Detroit.
A laid-back players coach? Perfect.
Thanks, Detoilet!
No kidding. I think an authoritarian, no nonsense type guy is what is needed. Someone needs to get the asylum in order, and I don't see Caldwell as being that guy.
He's not walking into a team led by Peyton Manning this time.
Titans over Lions: $1M more a year for Whisenhunt.
Mike Zimmer is the new Vikes coach
Vikings are hiring Mike Zimmer as their HC, per league source.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) January 15, 2014
For some reason I pictured him younger.
Perfect hire for the vikes
Mike Zimmer coached the bungles to 4 consecutive one and done playoff appearances and now will take his "success" on the road to the vikes who lost four Super Bowls
Success begets success, suck begets suck
Leaves the AFC chokers for the NFC chokers - what a resume !
I think Zimmer is a pretty good DC, and the story about his wife was heart breaking. Who knows if that will translate to HC, only one way to fine out. But I think the Queens needed to look for an Offensive coach, they have some playmakers, and have the HC use those pieces. A DC for the Queens is a bad move, which I am OK with.
No clue how he'll do but he's been a pretty good DC for years
The Bengals have a damn good defense. The defense didn't throw 4 interceptions in their playoff game. Marvin Lewis should have been canned a long time ago.
