The Moment the Packers Knew Jordan Love Was Ready to Take Over for Aaron Rodgers

Interesting piece by Albert Breer that includes some comments from MLF that I don't recall previously being reported (regrets over how he approached the Eagle game after the injury).

P.B. mentioned this on Locked on Packers podcast. Thanks for posting!

I just have one question for MLF, how did you not think Spagnuolo would do anything BUT blitz J-Lo all friggin day.

A minor indictment of MLF that hopefully he improves from.

The first day of the joint practice between the Bengals and Packers was highlighted by two fights involving Elgton Jenkins. Both offenses struggled against the defenses, which is pretty typical for the early weeks of training camp. However, Love played particularly well individually, which is something Bengals cornerback Mike Hilton took note of:

“Real strong arm. Obviously that’s what he’s been known for, but you can tell … he’s seeing things a little slower and his process is a little faster, so I feel like Green Bay got a good one.”

This echoes the comments made by Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Darius Slay after he faced Love in the second half of the Packers’ game against his team last year: “Green Bay got a bright future, because buddy was slinging it.”

More of a camp story than a Love note (how has nobody trademarked this yet?), but Doubs has been getting deep on guys all camp.  Not just safety or slot guys but Jaire as well as that rookie he dusted on Wednesday, who ran a 4.25 pre-draft.  This is either a result of the attention Watson's speed draws from the secondary's alignment or he's simply really good at it.  I know he had a lot of long balls on his college tape.

He’s comparing Love to Andy Dalton?😂😂😂😂 I am absolutely certain Demovsky doesn’t know what he’s doing…other than dropping clickbait.

I've always said the likely comparable for Love is a Joe Flacco/Ryan Tannehill.  IE, guys who will make splashy plays now and then, and get you into the post season, but also will make mistakes and will be good for double digit INTs every year.

I mean, I hope he's better than that but that's kinda what he always reminded me of.  Dalton is fairly big diss as he only had one full season with a QB rating over 90.

I think you are going to be very wrong. I mean, this is the level of expectations Bear fans have for Love. This is what has them trash talking like a bunch of drug ladened NBA All-Stars.

Comments like these convince me that the whole league is going to implode, and every fan of the other NFLN teams, and 25% of so called Packers fans, are going to commit seppuku, when this kid throws for 300 yards and 3 TDs against the Bears.

There is no way that is the expectation Bears fans have.  Flacco won a Super Bowl and had one of the best post seasons of all time at QB that year.

Forgive me as I interrupt this thread to talk about Love’s performance today.  😀

On a scale from 1 to 10, I’ll give him a 6.5.  He was pretty good, but still shows some rough edges.  That said, there’s enough talent there that I feel way better about him than I did at this point last year.  He’s played very little football since 2019 and sometimes it shows.  That said, inexperience won’t be a problem after this year as long as he can stay healthy.

He and the offense clearly have a ways to go to clean things up if they want to surprise some people.  Overall, a pretty good start to the preseason but certainly nothing awe inspiring either.  Looking forward to seeing Love continue to develop.

Wholly moley - bit of an over-reaction, isn't that?

I missed the Love train but saw all of the big red dog. My best take is he seems to make quick decisions, with enough velocity to make good ones pay off.

One upside is it looks like they may have playmakers in each offensive position. The rb group is proven. Watson has deep threat ability. Doubs is willing to get in the muck to make catches and they can move him around. Reed has looked decent so hopefully he can man the slot. Wicks had a splash play. Toure got involved. And two young tight ends that are showing promise. There were some bad plays and mental errors that need cleaning up. But I liked the way the offense performed for the most part. Nobody wants to get their qb killed, and the line had some issues tonight. It will be interesting to see whether JL's mobility serves to cancel out some of the coverage sacks that occurred with the old man last year. Both Love and Clifford responded well to the adversity and mounted impressive drives. I think there's a lot to look forward to with this bunch.

The WR group looks especially deep and much improved over last season at this stage. Both Wicks and Heath look better than Doubs and Watson did at this stage last year. Add Toure and Reed to the mix and there is no comparison to last season's group.

All of those pundits that called Clifford a wasted pick are going to have egg on their face. Could the Packers waited for him after the draft? Maybe, but why take a chance? But when you have 11 picks, and already did the heavy lifting in the draft, why not take a guy that started 4 years at PSU and sent Levis packing?

I saw a lot more energy than I saw last preseason.

Doubs was really good in the preseason last year.

Cool video. Nice breakdown of what Love did well and how far he still has to go. If Love learns to keep his emotions in check, especially at the start of a game, he'll be okay. I wish we had a closeup video of Love on that Musgrave throw; Love's eyes must have been huge when he saw how open Musgrave was!
