I'd still like to see Carmicheal of the Saints interviewed.   But no matter who you bring in one of the questions will be, "Are you willing to retain Mike Pettine as DC?"

And what if it’s the number one guy on your board and he says no to Pettine?  What if Pettine doesn’t want to work for that guy?

I’d sure hope the Packer braintrust isn’t prioritizing keeping a nice DC over the best HC.

I agree you can't force a coach on a new HC.  If they go with one of the younger guys I would think they'd be pretty happy to work with Pettine simply because they don't have their own personal old boys network yet.  McVince was the same.  He didn't bring much with him in regard to the defensive side of the ball and even kept guys like Philbardi and Cogbot and Jagodumfukoski.

I think McDaniels might want to bring in his own crowd but he also has a lot of experience playing against Pettine defenses so I'd have to think he'd be interested as well.

listening to the presser yesterday, I think it's ok to have more than 1 smart football guy evaluate a coach, and for who makes the decision he was pretty clear, gutey would be doing alot of the leg work and choosing candidates, mm would be part of the interviews and ultimately selecting, but the way he explained it, 2 heads are better than 1, I am ok with it, a lot of GM's would not be, but I think it works for a publicly owned team.  I think Gutey is special kind of guy, its clear, the old way of doing things is over.

This is the old way of doing things, 1980's style.

That's just great. Now Gute is third on the list in decision making for this new hire!

Urban Meyer will retire as head coach of the Ohio State football team following the Buckeyes' Rose Bowl clash with the Washington Huskies on Jan. 1.

According to Bill Landis of The Athletic, Ohio State offensive coordinator Ryan Day will take over as head coach effective Jan. 2.

Landis added that Ohio State will hold a press conference Tuesday at 2 p.m. ET to formally announce the forthcoming changes.

I agree, if new guy wants him, great. That said, I also don't want to simply bring in a new HC and keep the majority of this lazy, stale staff. This organization needs a housecleaning. I  want to avoid any "we did it this way" horseshit  at 1265. This firing needs be viewed as a reboot. This isn't just an indictment on McCarthy, it's the entire stale lazy staff. Getting rid of every one of them, with a possible exception to Pettine, should be the expectation in my mind.

I agree but Pettine inherited turds like Moss.  McVince was still making the calls on coaches.  I can't imagine Pettine is reveling in some of the assistants under him right now.  See: Moss presser.

What would be nice is if the incoming coach made the decision to work with Pettine and the two created a whole new staff.

I don't think Saban is just a college guy. He did well with the Dolphins 1 year and fukked up by not signing Brees, signing Culpepper instead which doomed the second year. Supposedly he did well instilling the right attitude with his team, people are obviously bitter about how he left though. Had he signed Brees and stayed I think he would have been very successful. Control is the biggest issue, I think he would leave Bama though.

The guy is 67 or 68 so I don't think we want to go down that road and I just don't think he leaves Bama.  And not to mention is that I have read multimple times his wife doesnt like the fish bowl that is Tuscaloosa so I just can't see it.

And we all know he would want complete control and GB is just not going to give that or should they.  HARD PASS.

Reread her post. It is very obvious that she is tossing Meyer's hat into the Packer coaching ring since he will be 'available.' If you read a little closer, she also notes that Meyer would not be a good idea. Very solid post all around. Good to eliminate Meyer from the discussion. Thanks Goldie!

Not sure what to make of supposed report of Murphy not intending to fire McVince until he did.

Do you have a link?   I keep seeing this referenced here but never seen the report.

Brainded, Murphy essentially said this in the press conference with Gute.  He was hoping to see a turnaround starting with the Cardinals game.  He referenced back to previous years and slow starts, where the team did go on a run after ("run the table").  However, that was particularly interesting, because MM already had a previous baseline of slow starts.  He won't admit this, but he was probably already seeing signs of MM's tenure ending in previous years - with the new power structure, he can be more aggressive.

50K CLUB:
It was particularly damning to see Gute get a question about the roster quality, and see him say with a straight face that we believe in the guys in the room.

I sure caught that comment.  I get saying the politically correct thing, but Gute takes that to an extreme (imo).

Interesting read at JSO about who MM beat out for the job in 2006:

Payton, Philips, Rivera, Childress....

Only name on that list that ended up doing "better" than MM was maybe Payton.  I do remember thinking, when the Packers hired MM, who the hell is this guy.

"I'd flown up to Green Bay and had a terrific interview with the Packers," Payton wrote. "That's a great organization - a team I had followed since I was a kid. I felt optimistic about that possibility and was expecting to hear something soon."

Zero regrets how things worked out. Payton made the most of his opportunity in New Orleans and delivered my single favorite non Packer football memory. This is not Detroit Man THIS IS THE SUPER BOWL!

Love big Mike. He loved Green Bay. We were very fortunate as fans that he took the job. So many great memories.

Payton benefited from a few down years that they turned into some good picks. But he evolved into a different offense. Mike decided to stay the course. Mike went out like he came in. Doing things his way. It was just time for change. But I wouldnt trade anything for the last 13 years. It’s been a hell of a fun ride.

But MM had a better Mission Statement!

https://cheeseheadtv.com/blog/...ys-mission-statement

THE FOUNDATION FOR THE NEW DIRECTION OF THE GREEN BAY PACKERS WILL BE CONSTRUCTED WITH THREE KEY COMPONENTS OF OBTAINING "PACKER PEOPLE," CREATING "STABLE STRUCTURE" AND CONCENTRATING ON "CHARACTER AND CHEMISTRY."

A POSITIVE ENVIRONMENT WILL BE CREATED WITH "LEADERSHIP" THAT KEEPS ITS EYE ON THE TARGET OF ESTABLISHING A CHAMPIONSHIP FOOTBALL TEAM.

THE DIRECTION WILL BE FUELED WITH CONSTANT COMMUNICATION TO ENSURE EVERYONE IS ON BOARD. WE WILL ATTACK THE VOYAGE WITH ENERGY AND ENTHUSIASM TO OVERCOME THE OBSTACLES THAT WE WILL ENCOUNTER.

THIS VISION IS ENHANCED WITH RESOURCES AND TRADITION THAT STANDS IN THE FOREFRONT OF PROFESSIONAL SPORTS ORGANIZATIONS.

I AM HONORED AND PRIVILEGED FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEAD THE GREEN BAY PACKERS ON A NEW JOURNEY BACK TO THE PINNACLE THAT BEARS THE NAME OF "COACH LOMBARDI."

Maybe Payton will win the SB and then come to GB for bucket list reasons.  And he'll have Taysom Hill as one of his carry-on's.

I was thinking the same thing about Andy Reid, minus the Taysom Hill part.

All that is currently on his twitter or replies.

Looking through his twitter it seems he only joined in October, it looks like because someone told him there was criticism of the team, he seems to be sensitive to criticism, and very religious.

Well, Winston Moss has weighed in on twitter re: the right stuff for a head coach.  This last month is going to be a cluster.

The loss to the 2-9 desert Cardinals in the snow at Lambeau signified just what a cluster it already was in Green Bay.

Much better that the self-serving tweets, leaks, and stories come out now so that the recriminations can be dealt with before the new head coach takes over.

But yes, hearing from Winston is a quite a development.

Better than 41-0?  Or Gary Anderson?  Or Blair Kiel Walsh wide left?  Or 38-7?

Sorry; I could go on all night.
