I'm sure they were or even are interested in bringing Cook back, but probably not at the price or length Cook is digging in for.
Maybe we could swing a trade to bring his big bro to GB to unite them!

I'm interested in the terms of the Bennett deal. Heading into FA, Bennett made it clear that he wanted to get paid. That makes me think that it was for a decent chunk of change and multiple years. That's fine with me - I would like to see Rodgers have the opportunity to develop long term chemistry with a stud TE.
Bennett is going to be a beast playing with Rodgers. This should be fun to watch.
I thought TT didn't sign FAs
The other guess is that Cook was asking for money that was close to what Bennett, clearly a better player, would go for.
LOOOOOOOOOOVE this
I'm pumped, a big TE w/ a kick-some-a$$ attitude is a welcome addition in GB.
My assault on TT was obviously premature. I'll shut up now.
It's hard to articulate how terrifying this move makes GBs passing attack and running game. If I'm Lacy I throw down the free dinner in Seattle then head directly to Sea-Tac for a nonstop to WI.
It's going to be really interesting seeing how Bennett performs at Safety or Cornerback. I'm sure they'll decide on the specifics of his position during training camp.
We need a GM that builds through the draft and develop philosophy.
All this crazy spending is scaring me.
I am absolutely stunned TT got bold. Good signing. However, he still needs to fix the secondary, and if he was going to "go big or go home", perhaps he should have signed Bouye and brought back Cook. You solidify two spots instead of just one that way.

UPGRADE, motha ****ers!!! Check out my last post before this one.
Nostra-goaline. I sure didn't see this coming.
Well, me neither.
Hearing the deal that Martellus Bennett got from the Packers β three years, $18.45 million β is actually less than what Jared Cook and the Packers were close to agreeing to.
Rob Demovsky, ESPN Staff WriterWhoa didn't see that coming. Yes, he's got 'tude but no questioning his size and talents. Aaron has a new toy, that should make him happy as well. Nice job Ted!
Well, what the hell, that's out of left field. I like Cook but Bennett is more talented. I'd love to see both line up but that's not very realistic.

Love it!

Would love to see Cook back but seriously, he is stiff and has terrible hands. Probably a dozen second stringers around the league who could come in and replicate what he did. I know there's not much love for Rich Rod around here but I think he would be fine carrying the position if needed, not much drop off there at all. Not as fast but much better hands.
We were MUCH better when Cook was in the lineup. There are not "a dozen second stringers" who can threaten the seam like he can.
Only one I can think of, personally. Martellus Bennett.
You called it, Goalline!

I'd love to see a 2 TE set with Cook and Bennett with Monty/Cobb in the backfield and Nelson/Adams split out. That's a pretty sick formation. Hope they can bring Cook back...it's a pipe dream, but would be pretty awesome.
Ted signed a better TE for cheaper then Cook wanted. That's some serious wheeling and dealing. Wow.

Oh man, don't do that to me.
I think this has to bring Cook's price down, right?
What scares me about bennet is he does have an attitude. Our offense, Lang aside (likely gone,) is soft in personality and physicality. He just doesn't seem to fit the mold of the locker TT built.
However, if, we could have Bennet and Cook together, it'd be the most lethal TE group since Gronk and Hernandez, with a better QB than they had. JMO
Wow I did not see that coming. He's a better player than Cook. Maybe not quite as good as a downfield threat but he's better in just about every other facet of being TE, especially blocking. And I've read a lot about the Bennett brothers lately and it's not that either have a bad attitude, but that they are quirky. Not all coaches and locker rooms deal with that well but I think he'll be fine in Green Bay.
And if Bennett is getting $6m per year, that puts Cook in the $4-5m that I was expecting. My guess is Cook and his agent got greedy, assuming that TT wasn't negotiating with any other TEs since TT never signs free agents. Oops.

I don't know about that. Looks pretty good to me! http://www.packers.com/media-c...+Video-GB_sf61600122
Think about this - The Bears had Martellus Bennett, Alshon Jeffrey, Brandon Marshall, and Matt Forte.....and still SUCKED.
Now I know why Peppers had to go. Only one former Bear allowed per year.
Hmmmmmm, what oh what could have been the thing dragging them down?

I guess Aaron Rodgers is maybe a little better than Jay Cutler?
I was channel surfing today before the hoops games and there was a talking head out there who was saying he thought Cutler has always gotten a raw deal in terms of the teams around him. I almost spit out my drink hearing that. I guess Cutler does have one person left in the world that still believes in him, but wow, I think the only way you sign him is if you have 2 QBs get hurt and you decide to tank your season.
Just a Yuuuuuge thank you to the 2017 TE draft class. Seriously.

Well, that's just what the Bears do.

MARTELLUS bENNETT?

MARTELLUS BENNETT?
The Green Bay Packers have signed former New England Patriots tight end Martellus Bennett, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Former Patriots TE Martellus Bennett is signing with the Packers, per source.
A Super Bowl champion with the Patriots last season, Bennett is now headed to Green Bay to be a replacement for Jared Cook - who was unable to agree to a new deal with the Packers.
Bennett, 30, caught 55 passes for 701 yards and seven touchdowns over 16 games with the Patriots last season.
Uncle Ted losing it?
I am pleased.
When I first saw this news I thought maybe Thompson flinched. But if the Demovsky tweet is accurate that the Bennett deal is less than what the Packers and Cook almost sealed, well, don't jack with the Steely-Eyed-Assassin.
RochNyFan posted:I think this team needs a little more personality and swagger. Too many nice guys.
Love this signing. Just love it. I agree that Bill beat Ted to him last season, but Bennett ain't stupid. Anyone who saw Rodgers play down the stretch last year know he's probably the best combo QB ever (brains plus physical talent and drive).
Agree about personality and swagger. Clay being the poster child, Rodgers has even more swagger. But this team needs it in it's playmaking positions and Martellus has just that extra bit of edge and muscle, because he can back it up on the field. He's a Swiss Army Knife guy, too. A big one.
As for him being a head case, well playing with Jay Cutler will do that. He didn't cause Brady any problems. And now he's playing with a just-as-demanding, even better QB. HUGE upgrade over Cook and I was a Cook guy for what he brought to this offense, even before he took one snap.
IF he doesn't sign Cook for less than Bennett, then I think TT selects a TE in the draft, too.
Sounds like Cook thought he had the leverage when actually TT did. An easy call if the reports of similar numbers are accurate.
