I guess we shouldn't consider any of the drops. Those are obviously Hundley's fault too.
Really the only positions I feel don't need addressing with a high pick would be D-Line, QB, and Safety. RB probably can be avoided, but if you think there's a potential great that slipped to the 2nd or 3rd round, I wouldn't have a problem going in that direction.
I agree with OT being a gigantic need with both Bulaga and Spriggs looking like they cannot be counted on. Heck, I think they could stand to draft an interior guy as well in the middle rounds.
heyward posted:I guess we shouldn't consider any of the drops. Those are obviously Hundley's fault too.
Clearly no favors were given, but I honestly havenβt seen anything from Hundley that screams βdouble down on this investment.β
There's plenty of reasons to doubt Hundley, but if other guys did their jobs the other night, his performance would've been judged much differently. He made some very good throws.
I think the top priority has to be OT. Bulaga is an injury waiting to happen and I assume Spriggs won't be available at all next season (Not that he's the answer but he could develop I suppose in time).
Pass rush is always a priority and Lord knows GB needs some help there. CB has to be near the top of the list as well. WR isn't too far behind.
I think GB is good at QB... actually, I hope they sign a journeyman in FA and just be done with it. DL is good too. Probably good at RB with Jones and Williams.
I'd also make a few position changes for 2018 and beyond. I'd move Monty back to WR and play him in the slot. I'd also move CM to MLB at this point in his career. He can still rush the passer from there and use his instincts to cover the whole field rather than just half of it.
heyward posted:I guess we shouldn't consider any of the drops. Those are obviously Hundley's fault too.
Is that a Pyrrhic victory or a moral victory? Need to add that to the stat line.
Both are true: Hundley is horrible and his receivers dropped way too many balls against the Vikings.
Team needs to address TE as well. Other than DL and RB the roster is littered with holes that need to be filled.
Debating who was worse, Hundley or WRs, might be indicative of overall suck.
Re: "holes": As are most rosters in the NFL. The roster is an evolving, living breathing entity. Health plays a factor too.
I don't believe the holes on the roster are as large as being portrayed by some here & in the media.
Coaching....plain & simple.
Eagles went from 7-9 in 2016 to currently 13-2. If they win next week, DOUBLING, their win total
(Maybe Doug Pedersen is right, Eagles are as talented as 1996 Packers. No he really isn't but their record is excellent)
What's the difference?
- Carson Wentz improved
- Coaching
It's time to stop the...."Rodgers will save us!" attitude & start building a FULL team around him. Not just defense but Special Teams too.
On the OL we have some guy named Murphy that played well until he went down early returning. I think we need to give Rodgers the one weapon he hasn't had that has made Brady look awesome, a TE. Even the guy in Carolina looked the part with a TE to carry him. Is there a TE in the draft worth a first rd pick or will we have to trade down first?
Defense may have holes but I won't believe that until we have a fully functional DC. Not one that can't find positions for guys that leave us to become starters if not All-Pros for someone else!
After watching Kendricks seemingly drop as many balls as he caught, time to get a real TE (top 3 round player) in the draft - completely sick of trying to get production from this position from aging vets, converted WRs, and turtle-slow draft picks that can't block. This draft seems to be stocked with options...find the best run-blocking TE that can catch and go with him. Top-line speed ala Finley not necessary, but the player needs to be smart, have the ability and help the budding running game, and be a dependable pass-catching option for AR12.
I thought the drops were a result of Hundley's low BFI.

Boris: You are singing to the choir!!! Coaching matters and it is time for this team to maximize that part of the team. I am not down on McCarthy but most definitely a new voice is needed on D. I do wonder what a new offensive scheme could look like IN GB but I would settle for a top 10 defense!! There are pieces on the D and it is time to make use of them!
The best defenses currently in the NFL (sorry Seasucks) Jacksonville, Minnesota and Baltimore own the 15 yards around the line of scrimmage and hope the pass rush helps the secondary. I can only imagine the pointy thing sticking out of Rodgers pants if he knew he would get 4 or 5 - 3 and outs every game from his defense!

Sign Trey Burton in FA
"Run the Table" coincided with Cook getting healthy. Having a TE that can threaten the defense in the seam is key in beating Cover 2. Geisicki is an athletic 6'6" TE that could be available in third round.

Agree completely a FULL team needs to be built around Rodgers.
I also agree Philly improved mightily due to Wentz's second year progress and that the Pack needs better coaching on the defensive side of the ball.
However, it is also true that the Eagles improved the talent level on offense around Wentz since last season ended by adding Ajayi and Blount, their top two RBs, via trade/free agency, and Jeffrey and Torrey Smith, two of their top three WRs, through free agency.
It is also worth noting that Philly went after a veteran backup QB in Foles and he is 3-0 since taking over for Wentz.
They also made offseason trades for starting DT Jernigan and starting CB Darby who have both been big contributors.
And Wentz didn't even have McCarthy's QB school.
PHI O played like sh!t last night, and their D essentially won the game for them.

Is that legal?
I think they'll have to release Wentz because of it.
I like Hurst at TE. He is physically ready for the NFL. I watched him all season since my son attends South Carolina.
Only knock on him is that he will be an "old" (25) rookie since he played pro baseball first. I'm interested to see how his combine numbers compare to Geisicki, Fumagalli, & Andrews. All 4 of them appear to be able to catch the ball.

I see most TEs this draft getting picked in rounds 2-4. Maybe Hayden Hurst of South Carolina goes in the first, but I feel the others will go in rounds 2-4 unless there is a run on TEs like there was on QBs, CBs and pass rushers early in the past few drafts.

We cannot leave Stanford's Dalton Schultz out of the TE conversation. He may be the best blocking TE in the draft who can also catch the ball. Walter Football has compared him to Jason Witten.
Don't see TT picking a TE any higher than the third.

Boris, you are preaching to this choir as well. I really and truly believe that a better DC can win with the talent that is on this defense. I also agree with the Eagles example that there was a lot of talent there it just wasn't coached right.
Health does play a factor in things. I know that we really shouldn't blame injuries for too much and have the next man up mentality but sooner or later you run out of bodies no matter how good your roster management is.
As for the draft I think they Pack needs to address in no particular order:
OL, Defense everywhere, TE, and maybe a QB, Guard.

Perhaps TT should review the 96 Packers. It was nice having Mark Chmura and Keith Jackson.
Our offense has been at its best when we've had a TE that can threaten the seam.

He could also just reflect on the healthy days of Finley as wellβ¦
Or the healthy ones of Jared Cook..
Letting Cook walk was just dumb.
That wasn't the general feeling here at the time.
Likely more to the Cook situation than has been reported. Maybe he wanted more $, a longer deal?
heyward posted:That wasn't the general feeling here at the time.
That was because we thought that Bennett actually wanted to play here.
I too was duped into believing Bennett over cook was to our advantage.
There was no reason not to. Nobody could have predicted the way the MB situation unfolded. Cook also missed 6 games with injury whereas MB had virtually no injury history. It blew up like our QB's collarbone, unexpectedly.
