Unless you want someone who can contribute right away, he'd make a good pick. We've been burned too many times, though, by taking flyers on guys with an injury, especially in the early rounds... although he's not really a flyer, but a very good prospect. If he drops, it's because teams are afraid of the injury.

Caleb Farley had microdiscectomy surgery this week, keeping him from pro-day workouts.
That shouldn't keep him from playing this season, but it may drop him from CB1 on some teams boards and move him lower down the board.
If he is still there in the early/mid 20's I'd love Gutey to move up and get him.

Still, any time you have any kind of an -ectomy, that seems a bit (disc)concerning.
Any x4 micro-sturgeons care to weigh in?

The 9ers really had no choice. It's possible they were in the market for Deshaun Watson, but that has quickly gone tits up, and I doubt Seattle would ever trade Wilson to SF. Aside from those two quarterbacks, no other free agent would make sense for them.

They sure paid a lot in draft capital.

I would assume they are looking at Josh Fields as their QB.  He’d be an interesting guy to have in that Shanahan system with his dual threat capability.

The key for the 49ers future is that they get healthier as they were as hard hit by injury as just about anyone.  You get Kittle, Deebo Samuel, Ayuik, and Bosa back healthy and that will be a very good situation for a high potential guy like Josh Fields to walk into if he’s the guy at #3.

Good luck to them if they pick Justin Fields.  He's the next "Bustin" waiting to happen.  He had the benefit of being surrounded by immense levels of talent on a dominant team in a weak conference.  Was never impressed with his performance in big games.

Honestly I thought he looked great against Clemson and like crap against Northwestern. He took that shot against Clemson and kept grinding, I give him some respect for that. I agree though he and Lawrence and Mac Jones as well were surrounded by stacked rosters that made life pretty easy. I give the NDSU and BYU kids some more credit because they had to create a lot more than the other guys. Going to be interesting how this class shakes out.

I don't think they hold Parsons' positional value high enough even if he's there. Where I think Zaven Collins is a chess piece you can move around on the defense, Parsons is a guy you "plop down" in the middle and everyone moves around him.

The things I like about Collins are his size, athleticism, and ability to rush the passer...he could very easily be another "Z". He's excellent in coverage, which is amazing, given his size. The one knock on him is his run defense, and taking on blocks, which I also find a bit surprising, because of his size. Must be a technique thing. That can be taught.

Whoever #3 is for (Wilson or Jones) SF obviously believed they had ZERO shot of getting their guy at #12. Eagles at #6 were probably going to take their guy because they were in on the trade talks to get to #3 too.

Mac Jones is an interesting one. He was a great college QB, but he was throwing to three projected first round picks this year. Waddle is projected at #6, D. Smith at #13, and Methie at #22 next year. He was handing off to a potential 1st round RB (Harris is projected at #34) and had 3 OL in front of him projected as 1st or 2nd round picks. One of their starting guards is projected as a 6th round pick and the TE is also a projected 6th rounder. The other guard is also a projected late round pick.

In other words, he was part of an offense in which the entire starting unit is likely to be drafted and 7 of the other 10 guys are 1st or 2nd round picks. No matter where he goes, the team is likely to have less talent than Bama had this year. The fact that the best college WR this century (D. Smith) isn't even their top NFL WR prospect (and maybe even be their 3rd best) says a lot. Waddle is probably a sub 4.3 40 guy.

Is Mac Jones just a product of that system? Tua looked great there to and the Dolphins aren't even sure they want him less than a handful of games in Miami.
