Was there a large contingency of “fans” calling him a bust.? Or was it just not liking the pick? Or both?

YOU, YOURSELF SAID THIS on the first page! I believe he has proved you w(R)ong.

Meanwhile, go back & continue re-reading the first 3 pages of this thread.

Like I said on Page 2..."I haven't seen this much whining about a Packer draft pick since 1995"

You cant question Boris. How dare you? I never question our fearless leader.

Oh, one more thing. #fuckyouboris. Yes, i hated the pick.😄

I hated it too.  The one thing I had hope for was that similar to Kenny Clark, Gary was very young for his draft class and maybe had more room to develop than some of the older guys from the draft class.

We saw Gary take a huge jump last year, hopefully we continue to see improvements.

By the way, he hasn’t proven me rong about anything.  You (Boris) have no idea if he’s gonna continue to improve or not.  Admittedly, after hardly getting on the field his rookie year, he made nice strides in year 2.  Would even agree that he was an impact player in the second half of the season. That’s great.  I hope he continues to improve. He could have a banner season in year 3 and be named AP All Pro at his position.  And it still doesn’t mean he’s gonna be an elite player down the road for the Packers or anyone else.  Just ask another recent former GB First Rounder who didn’t like the name his mom gave him. Is he even in the league anymore?

I said he was a bust??? Or did I say I hated the pick.  Not the same thing at all.  But you already knew that.

"I absolutely HATE HATE HATE this pick. Prove me wrong Mr. Gary"

You implied "bust" but you already knew that.

Since you at a minimum "hated" the pick so much, you obviously felt he wasn't worthy of the slot he was drafted. He's proving he was worth that slot.

The point is, these GM's know where players are slotted to go. Gutey made a solid selection of a potential All Pro player in that slot. He's taken a lot of heat on this forum for multiple selections. Most of us are very unhappy he drafted Love last year, myself included. This pick is a good pick & he deserves to be recognized for it.

Or.....I don’t know, maybe I “hate, hate, hated” the pick for other reasons. Like, why sign two edge rushers as your big FA acquisitions and then use your 1st Rounder on an edge rusher when there are sooo many other needs? Maybe Gary was the BPA, right?

Or, maybe I “hate, hate, hated” the pick because they drafted in the 1st Round a “raw talent guy” that’s probably gonna take a couple of seasons to realize some of his potential when the clock is ticking on the number of seasons your HoF QB has remaining.

Question for you:

Boris says, “Most of us are very unhappy he drafted Love last year, [Boris] included”.

But a few sentences earlier, Boris says, “The point is, these GMs know where players are slotted to go.” And as we all know, Gute traded up to get his “slotted” first rounder.

Why were you unhappy with the pick of Love??? GMs know where players are slotted to go. You should’ve been jumping for joy that they were able to get their future QB. Or did you know that AR was gonna play at an MVP level last season? Maybe Love was the BPA, right?

Gary had a nice second season after not showing much in limited reps in year 1. But he’s no guarantee to be a stud edge rusher. So in my opinion, the jury is still out.  Let’s see if he continues to develop and is a multi season impact player for GB.

As I referenced earlier, solid development over 3 seasons, leading to national accolades is no guarantee of long term success.  This pick is a good pick & he deserves to be recognized for it....this sentence could’ve been said after year 3 of the HaHa pick by another GM.

I was never a Gary fan in college and i didn’t like the pick. Big deal, I’m a fan. I Hope he’s enshrined in the HoF as a Packer. I’m rooting for him and recognize his growth. But it seems a bit premature to be serving up crow for a guy that shown improvement and has been productive, so far, for about half a season.

Just my two pennies.

As a side note (and completely irrational), I hate all things University of Michigan. So I’m not gonna lie, that added fuel to the fire. Never thrilled at having to root for a Wolverine in any capacity.

Why were you unhappy with the pick of Love???

Because I felt that selection could've been better utilized on a defensive player NOW (aka Patrick Queen) or a #2 WR (Jefferson or Aiyuk, which they would've needed to trade up for & a lot more than a 4th rounder) Would it have made a difference in the NFC Championship Game? We'll never know.

I never said "I hated the pick of Love"

However, Gute & Co obviously felt the QB was high value in that slot (FYI so did the Colts as much as they want to deny it).

This thread is about R. Gary & he was an excellent selection at #12 in the first round.

I didn't like the Gary pick either but just like every pick in Packers history, after a short period of venting about it I got on board and became a fan of the guy.  I do it with all draft picks because as a fan, I don't really have a choice.  If you wear green and gold, I will root for you barring off field or locker room issues.

And I was wrong not to like the pick as he's showing to be a damn good player.  Can't find where I read it but remember something that he was 2nd in the NFL in pass rushing win rate in the last half of the season (some dude named Donald was first....).  Yes he has to improve but to hang your hat on "nothing is guaranteed" well the same can be said of every single player in the NFL.  Rodgers has to play like an all-pro next year or his MVP year in 2020 will be forgotten.

My sources tell me that his grappling skills are subpar and that if just watched a couple more MMA matches on my couch, I could take him.

I really enjoy how you have nothing to rebuke my opinion that Gary should get snaps other than a 6'5 265lb professional athlete could kick my ass.   I mean, shit, why didn't you just say so earlier?   Case closed!

I'm kind out of the  loop here and 7 days late, but---I loved the Gary  pick...was aghast early by his slow development, had to eat some  crow when he started to develop...but man did he get his a$$ kicked in the Tampa game, holding or not. He is good, but I don't think  outstanding, better than a lot of Ted's early picks....Savage also is good, not much of a first round caliber run supporter, but he'll have a longer career as a result...Gute  has had two excellent picks, two decent picks, two potentially okay picks and a ton of absolute wiffs...including a potentially catastrophic QB pick that could make the Rich Campbell pick and the Hadl trade look like mild mistakes, thank goodness for Smith, Amos and Turner and the coach he hired.

Johnson.

Rich Campbell and Aaron Rodgers went to the same college - Cal.  When Rodgers was drafted there was a guy at work who famously said "We drafted a QB from the same school as Campbell?  What were they thinking?"  It was Ted Thompsons first draft.  And while there will be no QB draft pick in the history of Packers worse than Campbell, there will be none better than Rodgers.  I wouldn't toss a guy who hasn't taken an NFL snap in a real game under the bus just yet.  He "could be" our third NFL HOF QB in a row.  The chances went up dramatically when the Vikings passed on him - twice!  Just like they did with Rodgers.  Time will tell the tale - take a three year sleeping pill and then lets see where things stand.

And the guy who made that quote?  He is the son of John (Red) Cochran - former Packer offensive backfield coach and scout who died in 2004.  Russ was the materials and processes engineer on some projects I worked on and never minced words when it came the to Packers.

I am wrong a lot and hope to be again...but trading up to take Jordan Love could be a monumental disaster.

First point: Stay put at 29 and  Higgins and Pittman are available--one extra catch against Tampa Bay makes the difference in that game. And then you have the 4th round 136 pick available---that spot could have landed several excellent interior lineman including our very own Tyler Biadasz. This changes who plays outside during the Tampa game and helps us with the loss of Linsley moving forward

Second point: Right now, it appears the Love pick will mean Rodgers days in Green Bay are over or shortened. I am biased, but I think Rodgers is the greatest QB of all time. That is arguable, but he is the clear  MVP with a pretty easy argument to make that he will play at an extraordinary level for several more years---maybe 5--I think that is a reasonable argument.  The love pick might have ended those 5 years,

And number 3: The chances of Jordan Love being a complete bust are much higher than the probability that he will match Rodgers level of play. Most likely he'll be passable,  a Mitch Tribisky type.  If so, and with the Packers recent below average drafts and numerous free agents--we could be heading for a serious return to the 1970s dark ages....I hope not, I loved the Jerry Tagge pick, the Jamal Reynolds pick and even the Justin Harrell pick ...so my track record is not so good.

What was wrong with the Jamal Reynolds pick?
