I'm kind out of the  loop here and 7 days late, but---I loved the Gary  pick...was aghast early by his slow development, had to eat some  crow when he started to develop...but man did he get his a$$ kicked in the Tampa game, holding or not. He is good, but I don't think  outstanding, better than a lot of Ted's early picks....Savage also is good, not much of a first round caliber run supporter, but he'll have a longer career as a result...Gute  has had two excellent picks, two decent picks, two potentially okay picks and a ton of absolute wiffs...including a potentially catastrophic QB pick that could make the Rich Campbell pick and the Hadl trade look like mild mistakes, thank goodness for Smith, Amos and Turner and the coach he hired.

The Hadl trade?  Seriously?

Devine sent first-, second-, and third-round picks in the 1975 draft and first- and second-round picks in the 1976 draft to Los Angeles for Hadl, who’d been benched by the Rams after his poor showing against the Packers.

The Packers mortgaged their franchise for a 34 year old, has-been QB, who was in the middle of a dreadful season and had posted an abysmal 9.1 QB rating in a game vs Green Bay just a few weeks earlier.

You might want to hold off at least until after camp and pre-season games before casting Love as an epic bust.

This Love hate (see what I did?) is starting to reach epic proportions of silliness. We have an aging QB and placed a talented young prospect under his watch. That is the way it is supposed to be done. Stop making more out of it than that.

Summary:  crazy reach for a project QB.  THE BOARD!  ALWAYS TRUST THE BOARD!

Honestly, I don't even care anymore.  You guys need a Black Bart otherwise you'd be bored.  You're welcome.

Yeah losing a non-premium pick for Love is not comparable to the Hadl trade.

I was not a fan of the whole Packer draft strategy last year, but it was the type of thing where adding another impact player or contributor MIGHT have made a difference in getting by Tampa Bay to the Super Bowl. Love is clearly someone with the physical skills to be a competent NFL QB at a minimum.

The Hadl trade (or as I remember as a young kid - the Lawrence Welk trade - a 1, a 2, a 1,2,3) is probably one of the worse handful of trades in NFL history. It may be one of the worst trades in American professional sports history. As others have said, Hadl was completely washed up and had no arm strength left at all. He had been good the year before, but the Rams knew he was done and fleeced Dan Devine (who was just desperate to keep his job). He got benched against the Packers earlier that year because he looked horrible.

https://thegruelingtruth.com/f...-trades-nfl-history/

Rumors swirled that the Packers had dealt for damaged goods. Some suggested the reason for Hadl’s woes was a bum throwing arm. “Chuck Knox knows my arm’s OK,” Hadl told reporters. “Ask him and he’ll tell you.” Packers fans had already seen the arm up close; Hadl completed just 6-of-16 passes and was benched in a Week Five loss to Green Bay in 1974. The idea the team would trade for him just 10 days later was puzzling.

The Hadl trade set up the Rams to have the depth to make the Super Bowl a few years later. It helped set up Bart Starr for failure when he became the Packers head coach.

Rams general manager Don Klosterman used Green Bay’s first-round pick of 1975 (No. 9 overall) to select defensive lineman Mike Fanning, who gave the team eight solid seasons. Klosterman used the remaining picks from the trade to assemble the core of Los Angeles’ secondary for the next few seasons: Monte Jackson, Pat Thomas and Nolan Cromwell (via a trade using another of Green Bay’s picks). With the rest of its picks in those two drafts, Los Angeles shored up its offensive line by drafting OG Dennis Harrah and OTs Doug France and Jackie Slater. These players would be instrumental in the Rams continued playoff success, and an eventual appearance in Super Bowl XIV.

Reach? He was a projected top 10 pick in some quarters. Some liked him better than Hebert.

The last time I stood up so staunchly for a draft pick we got Jamal Reynolds' career. I think I will stop.

Isn’t this thread supposed to be about how mediocre Gary is?

The Rodgers - Love Axis of Despair infects every thread... but we're working feverishly on a treatment now. Unfortunately, for many of these fans - its just too late and they'll have to be euthanized   ( a return to the dark ages, lol)

BODY LEAN!!

We don't know yet how Love will turn out, but I will say watching the very first clips of him doing some drills at the start of TC last year vs the end of the year were night and day. At the start, he practically made a watcher puke thinking, "We took this guy in the first round?" By the end of the year, he was a lot smoother, his footwork was cleaner, etc. There was a lot of progress, and that was with a shortened camp. Let's see what this year brings.

I loved Jamal Reynolds.  Only problem was he was always dinged up and not exactly the biggest or strongest guy to play DE.

Basically the anti Sean Jones or Terrell Suggs.

Completely forgot it was the pre-nut job KGB that basically took his job.  5th round pick KGB of that famous 2000 draft that also got them Bubba, Clifton, Diggs and Tauscher.  5 legit starters in one draft.  Oh, and Joey Jamison lol.
