Green Bay Packers stay out of Brett Favre drama
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS • MAY 13, 2009

HUDSON — The Green Bay Packers will “wait and see” what Brett Favre decides to do before they seek to restore their relationship, according to team president Mark Murphy.

Murphy didn’t directly answer a question Tuesday about whether a $20 million, 10-year marketing deal proposed to Favre last summer was still on the table. But Murphy said he wasn’t sure what the Packers’ future with Favre will look like, beyond the eventual retirement of his jersey.

“Kind of like with what we have with Bart Starr and some of our other great players, we want to have him back and I think he’ll be remembered as a Packer,” Murphy said. “But, obviously, I think we all need some time to pass before we make those decisions.”

Let's see. Last summer, the Favrebillies let it be known that the Packers were trying to bribe Favre by offering him that 20 million dollar deal. And of course, all the Favrists opened up the doors to their mobile homes and screamed the same thing.

Why on earth would Murphy or anybody else in the organization want to give this guy one red cent after that?

That's not entirely true, at least according to Wilde during his noon appearance on The D List. Wilde said the Packer Pro Shop went nuts ordering TOG jersies when he unretired last season and they are allowed to sell out their existing inventory but not replenish it.

Maybe somebody that has recently been to the Pro Shop can confirm whether there are TOG jersies for sale there. If so, I think the urgency of a marketing deal is in direct proportion to the demand for #4 stuff the Packers cannot sell. I don't think that demand is all that high right now. I can't imagine the folks that remain on Favre's bandwagon don't already have one, or 10, of them.

I suppose sales may pick up. The summer bonfire season is approaching, after all. Big Grin
This whole marketing payment is complete B.S. to this chicken. I don't care if you're Rob Davis, Craig Newsome, Good TOG, Bad TOG...in no way shape or form should these guys get paid a retirement stipend to show up for stuff. These dudes make too much cash to begin with. Pay them per appearence if you have to, pay for the travel expenses...whatever...but please don't throw them a big check for future stuff. Whatever agent started this whole thing should be worshiped by the players for that slick move.
Hipp - True, I heard what the Pro Shop did... but I'm fairly certain they did not order 10 years worth of Favre stuff.

chickeeboy - It is something agreed to by the Owners and the Players Association.

lol, I guess that depends on the rate of sales. 10 sold per year would mean 100 jersies would be 10 years worth.

Either way, it was a wise move to buy themselves some time for this to cool down and still give the Favre fans the option of believing it was all Thompson. Personally, I wouldn't mind those folks permanently jumping ship. But the team derives income from the Pro Shop and they can use every dollar they can get, with no deep pocket owner to bail them out financially.
if favre plays for minnesota, the favre-packer "brand" will be worth far, far less than if he stays retired. he's already damaged it with the crap he pulled last summer. at this point, screw him. i wouldn't retire his number anytime soon. in fact, give it to the new punter.

There are at least 10 prospective buyers in this group.
Just caught NFL Live on 'spn. Adrian Peterson was lukewarm about Favre to Vikings questions and seemed real uncomfortable answering. Odd to see him sitting there in his Nike shirt and a Nike shoe to his right. Marketing gone wild.
He needs to consult with Dr. Phil first

Sometimes you make the right decision, sometimes you make the decision right, Brett

That'll make everything better.

I get all my news from the Onion. Since all news is mostly served on a biased poo poo platter, why not at least get a laugh out of the deal?

ESPN reported that it's unclear whether the 39-year-old Favre would agree to have arthroscopic surgery in order to play. ESPN reported that a source close to Favre said minor surgery remains an option but that a three- to six-week rehabilitation is unappealing to him

So TOG doesn't want to rehab his bum throwing shoulder. He doesn't want to participate in mini-camp and OTAs. He probably doesn't want to dress with Viking teammates any more than he would with ex-Packer or ex-Jet teammates. He'll turn 40 during the season and his idea of preparation is throwing balls into the facemask of 3rd stringers for Oak Grove High.

Yup, he's the missing link for the Vikes alright. They need a little something to write an epic new chapter in their rich tradition.

This can't miss.
I'm trying not to pay attention to this story but it's unavoidable. It seems Dr. Andrews has Favre doing exercises to try and snap his biceps tendon so Favre can play pain free. Just how does one snap a bicep tendon with no pain .. I dunno?

It seems pretty inevitable that we'll be seeing Favre suit up for the Vikings. More power too him .... but even more power to the Packer defenders who I would like to see finish his career off for him.
Michael Irvin gets it

quote:
“I can’t understand this for the life of me,” Irvin said of the looming speculation and rumor that Favre will unretire to play for the Vikings. “I love Brett and I appreciate his competitiveness and I appreciate the times he didn’t listen to anyone. Because I remember the Monday night after he lost his father and everybody said, ‘Brett, don’t play. Just don’t play, Brett. It’s too tough for you.’ He didn’t listen. It was one of his greatest assets. He didn’t listen and he showed up and he played great and we have a memorable moment to remember on that Monday night, watching Brett Favre play that game because he did not listen to anyone.

“But the reality is now it’s time for him to start listening. His greatest asset is becoming his greatest liability. I hate the fact that you’re sitting here saying, ‘I want to go to Minnesota.’ You hate [Packers G.M.] Ted Thompson that much that you’re ready to kill each one of those Green Bay fans that cheered you on, that are going to put your kids through college? They made you the rich man that you are. Why kill them? Just let that thing go, Brett. Stay retired and you can make umpteen millions of dollars on number four jerseys in Green Bay.

“But if you go back to Green Bay wearing that Minnesota jersey? Oh, it’s a wrap, buddy. You lose your whole legacy with that.”

Gotta agree with Irvin. Favre's departure from GB left a sour taste in a lot of people's mouths. Suiting up for the Vikings will push many more over the edge.

For me, I guess I don't care all that much. The guy was a great player for GB and that will never be taken away from him. He's certainly not doing his legacy any favors by pulling this crap though.

If the guy wants to come back and play however, I think it would be cool for him to play in Minnesota. The hype surrounding that fiasco would be enormous. The drama leading up to the game at Lambeau would be even higher. I say play in Minnesota Brett... ya dumb****.

I remember saying so many times how much we'd miss him when he was gone.

Favre Tells Commish He’ll “Kick [Thompson’s] Ass Twice A Year”

I really think the Packers would have him for lunch. Twice. And I'd love to see it.

This is the most disappointing single thing I've seen in my years of watching the Packers since Bart was fired.

TT, bow down before the one you serve, your gonna get what you deserve!! NINE INCH NAILS BF is gonna whip that tail. Packerfan 75 or whatever his name is states that AR is a better QB? Took a 13-3 team to a 6-10 record. I know, yer sticking with the defense excuse. How many comeback victories did AR get last year? Is that the defenses fault too? This is coming back to bite all you BF haters right in the whoha. Gotta love it!

By far my favorite from that collective bunch of Wack Packers! Smiler WACKA WACKA WACKA

I agree completely. Sad, really Sad as its turning out, really Sad.
That's what he reportedly said to Goodell a year ago. I had thought a report along those lines was published at the time.

I saw this story today and didn't realize it was news. Think we knew he didn't like Thompson.
