Re: Are you "feeling it" NOW? +/- Seahawks WIN!
Losing Earl Thomas is the equivalent of losing Nick Collins. It took the Packer defense years to recover from losing Collins (I would argue that if he would have stayed healthy, they probably win at least another Super Bowl). As someone said, Chancellor is a great safety in run support (one of the best I've ever seen), but the reason he lasted until the 5th round of the draft is that he runs a 4.69 40. Here were his weaknesses according to NFL.com when he was drafted: Earl Thomas covers up...

Re: I am starting to get excited about our top 10 draft pick next spring
As much as Fournette is intriguing I worry a bit about his recent injury history. but then again I kind of wonder how "hurt" the guy was the season before he leaves? I think for a top part of the draft you have to hit on this pick. I don't follow college football enough to know who to pick but I think in no particular order they should go LB, DE, CB, WR, and RB. I don't think there is a TE in college who rates a ranking that high but maybe they could get Butt from Michigan in the top end of...

Re: I am starting to get excited about our top 10 draft pick next spring
I'll say talk of restructures is a bit premature at this point. The cap/floor should increase again next year, and we're somewhere around $10M under. While it's a nice idea to bring pay in line with production, I think we'd run into a situation where we had plenty of $$$, but no players to spend them on. I can't see jettisoning CM3, Lacy, Starks, Cobb, or others without somebody to replace them. That'll take another year or two at minimum. Shields is as good as gone already, and I fully...

Christine Michael could be on a 6 game try-out. He was picked 1 spot behind Lacy and has similar production (ypc wise) with less wear and tear. Playing behind Lynch initially he saw little opportunity. Hell, bring them both back. Neither should command significant FA $$, unless Michael goes nuts over the next 6 games. Re: The Ugly, The Bad ...and the Good?
I like your analogy there. Winning the division at 7-9 or 8-8 might be a temporary "feel good" story, but it might actually be a detriment in terms of re-building this team to reach World Championship caliber. In 2014 when the Pack was borderline World Championship caliber, the strength of the team was Jordy Nelson, Aaron Rodgers, Randall Cobb, Clay Matthews, Julius Peppers, and Eddie Lacy. Since that time Nelson has hit age 30 and had a significant injury. Cobb also received a big contract,...

Re: I am starting to get excited about our top 10 draft pick next spring
TT won't draft a TE in the 1st round. He will go for a O lineman. If they don't sign Lacy cheap, I see RB in the second round which means Fournette will be gone when our pick comes up. There are a lot of CBs in this draft so round 3 for that. TE in the 4th. We need a big TE that can move the chains. We haven't seen enough of Cook to say he's that guy. ILB and WR in the late rounds because TT has his eye on someone. Then he'll re-sign Barclay. For depth. Ugh!

Draft some Badgers. These guys have more guts and heart than any Packer does right now.

Re: I am starting to get excited about our top 10 draft pick next spring
There is no reason to draft Badgers other than if you are a homer. College football is a whole different level than NFL. The only players that look like they could play in the NFL are Watt and Biegle.

How silly of me to post this. TT and MM would never give them the chance to prove themselves in game situations anyway. They just praise them as to how good they are in camp.

Maybe it's just me but I don't see the same Woodson and Jabril Peppers comparisons. Peppers is a better athlete, but Woodson had off the charts instincts and an uncanny ability to make a play at the most important time- in college or the pros. Peppers is a good player I just don't know that he's trancedent like C Wood. Plus, what position does he play in the pros? Safety? LB? Corner? Overall a deep and quality draft for DBs and with Shields status in the air that's where I think TT will go...

I was watching Chuck Knoll's "A Football Life" on NFL network & a part really reminded me of the Packers situation right now. Knoll's wife said that he told her that their talent was depleted by drafting so late for many consecutive years & this was a factor in him thinking that he should retire. Of course this was before free agency as we know it, so the draft was really about the only way to build your team. Since TT rarely looks to Free Agency, we are essentially experiencing the...

Never look at last seasons SoS. It doesn't mean anything. Free Agency, draft, etc. Teams change very quickly now with players moving from team to team. What matters is this year & not so much who you play, but when you play them. The Colts would get their ass kicked now. A month & a half ago, not so much

With what we've seen so far with Montgomery do the Packers need to draft an RB early in the draft if they don't bring back Lacy?

Re: Why We Won/Why the Vikings can still go ****.q themselves
If teams were smart, they'd stop chasing franchise QBs in the first round and instead use those first round picks on o-line, pass rushers and CBs. In the last 10 years, guys like Bortles, Tannehill, Manziel, Manuel, Weeden, Gabbert, Ponder, Locker, etc. went way earlier than they deserved based just on talent; most were drafted about a round or two higher than their talent suggested because teams were so desperate for a QB. It all comes down to draft evaluation - just grab the most talented...

He didn't build ****! They built that team despite him, not because of him. He wanted to draft guys like Johnny Ootball. Poor Stephen had to tackle him to prevent that from happening.

Re: Why We Won/Why the Vikings can still go ****.q themselves
Well replace Jerry with Stephen in what I said, but the point still stands. Their OLine isn't just performing as well or better than every OLine in the NFL (I think GB pass blocks better), the rest of their O is feeding off the confidence that line provides. We don't see many rookie mistakes from Dak or Elliot because most rookies are overthinking and trying to do too much. Those guys seem to have the poise and confidence you don't normally see from rookies and I think a big part of that is...

Re: Why We Won/Why the Vikings can still go ****.q themselves
You do make a point. But the Texans have seen more success by not chasing a QB and instead drafting guys like Watt, Mercilus, Hopkins and Clowney. That said, they did chase a QB with Brock and we're all seeing how that played out. They would have been better off saving that money and playing Tom Savage. Not saying you ignore QB high in the draft, you just have to be careful not to overrate a QB just because you need a QB. You see it every draft season, where guys like Kizer, Watson and...

One could also state that if they were stupid enough to pay Osweiler it's highly unlikely they would be able to land a productive QB in the draft. That's just a bad GM or maybe a good GM because he knows he can't judge QB talent for ****.
Reply
Re: Why We Won/Why the Vikings can still go ****.q themselves
Yeah, you're probably right. Which is why it just all comes down to player evaluation. If a GM knows how to scout a QB, he'll be able to avoid the bad ones and pounce on the good ones. But it's a minefield; a GM has to avoid the Josh Freemans, Blain Gabberts, Jake Lockers and Christian Ponders and get lucky that Rodgers or Flacco falls, or that Brees/Manning become free agents (and injuries aren't an issue), or that you hit on a late draft pick (Brady, Wilson, Prescott), or you get a top 10...

Can't find the Geranimo Allison draft thread so I'll ado here. Very encouraging performance from him the last couple weeks. One of the press likened him to Boykin but I think Allison's height and length give him better match-up advantages. Starks was all elbows and knees when he ran and Geranimo is all arms and legs.

Re: Giants coffee talk
No matter what happens today, I want to go on record as saying that I'm proud of this team and what they have done since going 4-6. I was one of those who was calling for a clean slate (I'm sure someone can dig up my old posts if needed). I was calling for a lose out the rest of the season to improve draft status. I am enjoying my crow. I've browned it a little and thrown it into a great roux. I'm serving it as kind of an etouffe over some dirty rice. I figured a cajun theme would be nice.

I remember..... No matter what happens in the playoffs this year, changes are needed to stay competitive. I love this team & I'm thankful they are in the playoffs. FYI....Currently the home team is winning/has won every playoff game this year. Let's hope that trend continues. The finality of it all sucks but we can & will prevail. How about an instant classic in our favor today?? I would really enjoy that.

Re: Gruden's Grunts vs McCarthyism's Kids
Unfortunately, I think OL is a top 15 pick. And I would not trade Alexander or Jackson for any ÖL drafted between 14 and 45 at this moment. Hard to draft OLs that are not projects after the first 1 or 2 are off the board. The Packers are lucky to have Campen, he seems to be able to get the best out of mid round picks. Excluding Spriggs and the holding machine called Murphy. I wish they could all be Mark Tauschers.

Re: Gruden's Grunts vs McCarthyism's Kids
Madison could be promising, but he hasn't been in camp since his team mate and best friend killed himself. Good and great big bodies that can play at the NFL level are not that easy to find. What makes it harder is the fact that they don't always 'mature' at the same rate. It's a crap shoot and hindsight is always 20-20 except when you hit.

Jamarcus Russell, Vince Young, and a lot of high draft picks had physical skills that can't be taught also and had enormous success in college. Boyle is an UDFA that wasn't even good in college.

Re: It's Bear Week!!!
OT and OLB are both equally of concern. There doesn't even seem to be a stopgap level backup at OT (Bakh/Bulaga to Murphy/Spriggs) or OLB (CM3/Perry to Gilbert/Fackrell). In both cases they are paying for some bad draft picks from TT. At OT, Spriggs and OLB: Fackrell, Biegel, and Bradford (who would be in Year 5 now). You have to think they were shopping Trevor Davis to try to get a replacement level player for a backup at one of those positions.

There defense is strong across the board, but Daniels and Clark as almost as good as any interior DL duo in the league. Clark is an elite DL who is still only 23 years old. He's the one elite draft pick from the disasters that were the 2015 and 2016 TT draft (Martinez and Lowry and even Montgomery are decent picks - the other 11 are just awful).

I am not sure how the Packers can compete. The Vikings have the most talented team in the history of the NFL. Just ask their fans. Cousins is so much better than Rodgers, the Vikings coach is legendary and will be seen as Lombardi-Shula-Bellichech- esque in just a few short years. Their GM never makes any mistakes in teh draft and probably have the deepest team in depth that has ever been established. The team should just stay in Minnesota this weekend and have their staff throw their...

I think we should petition the Packers to just forfeit the game. There is no way our Packers should even step on the field with the mighty Vikings. Everywhere I go on the internet right now I see comments from Vikings fans with diarrhea of the mouth. They yap a lot for a team that hasn't won anything significant in 40+ years. I hate them and their team so much I will personally deliver some grape crush for Aaron to drink during his post game presser.

I agree, it'd be a huge mistake to pass on Murray or Queen. I know ILB isn't as "valuable" as other positions but #30 is the perfect place to draft a a starter at any position. Guard, Center, ILB, slot WR, nickel CB, etc., all the "non-value" positions.......you get a starter at 30, it's a good pick. Queen or Murray would give this team an ILB that they haven't seen in decades. I used to be on board with plugging "value" picks in at ILB and devoting more resources to pass rushers and...
