At the time the Packers had two very promising rookies named Rollins and Randall and the view was that Hayward couldn't play outside. Move only appears bad with the benefit of hindsight.
Not that hindsight is a bad tool for discovering issues. The question is, why were the Packers unable to see Hayward's talent to play on the outside? They missed so badly, I am actually expecting Randall to become all world in Cleveland. Something is amiss with the way we've been handling corners.

Packers let him go in free agency, he signs with the Chargers and goes on to play in back to back Pro Bowls.
Why do former Packer d-backs go on to play in Pro Bowls after they get away from Green Bay if Whitt is such a Yoda Jedi Master?
No need to upgrade the back 4, Joe Whitt will coach 'em up!

That's going to change beginning in 2018.

Yeah I remember how bad he was in that Charger game too
I think everyone saw the practical aspect of letting Hayward go. He was gimped and playing inconsistent ball but he wasn't horrible overall either. With Randall and Rollins coming in, yeah, he looked expendable from a cap POV. I remember the rap on him coming out a college was speed, nothing else. He was an aggressive ball hawk and showed it his rookie season. It was at that time the backfield kept roiling because of injuries. They kept trying to infuse new talent, who could never adjust to the super genius of The Wizard because they were left on a ****ing island with 5 encyclopedias.
When Hyde left and flourished (he totally didn't fit in The Wizard's defense, zone only) is when it became apparent it was scheme. It is a credit to Hyde, Whitt and Perry on how much Hyde did adjust to being a complete non fit and being asked to fill multiple positions.
I think it became abundantly clear how Whitt and some of the players felt about The Wizard's schemes in the past few seasons. It also didn't help when you're letting guys like Hayward go and keeping ding dongs like Carl Bradford and Vanillaface Run Fast Guy because they were so good at staying healthy on the bench.
Pettine has a lot more cut out for him than implementing a defense. He's on a salvage mission at this point. Add in he has super secret assistant to the assistant HC Moss to work with and it may take a couple years to find some stability.

FA CBs who can really help the #Packers secondary... Trumaine Johnson, Malcolm Butler, EJ Gaines... but not sure I'm breaking the bank for anyone else.

If they go after Aaron Colvin, that's pretty much bye-bye for Quinten Rollins..
It's a new day in Lambeau. The Packers are among the teams that have reached out to TE Jimmy Graham's reps, sources tell me and @TomPelissero. Hey now.

If Vikings were smart they would offer Drew Brees 70 billion dollars to be the quaterback the next two years.
Yes a TE please. A real TE would be very helpful
How much can Graham have left in him?
Goalline posted:I am actually expecting Randall to become all world in Cleveland.
I see the Browns are moving him back to safety. Fair to criticize TT for his too frequent attempts at fitting a round peg into a square hole.

Not to be nit picky or anything, but isn't $35 billon just a tad over the cap?

Ka-ching.
Please extend Rodgers soon, Gute.
Maybe the Packers will put Quinten Rollins at his natural position; point guard, where he spent the majority of his college career.
One year of football at Miami-Ohio. 2nd round draft pick.
When Gute said he wanted to be involved in every conversation, he wasn't kidding. Free agents we're apparently talking to:
Wilkerson
DRC
Watkins
Robinson
Graham
Trumaine Johnson
Butler
Damn, they're busy at 1265 today.

Cordarrelle Patterson played lots of football. Didn't seem to help him much.

Wasn't a fan of the Corswazzle trade-up pick. A tall Percy Harvin who couldn't run a route.

Pretty irrelevant if you were a fan or not.

Hate to say it but it's pretty much mandatory Gusenhof hits on one solid FA CB.

Just for kicks, let's say you get a choice of two. Which two would you want (ignore the contract, just pick the players that help make a run)
Annnnd go..............
(I would go Johnson, Graham)

Get back to me when Rollins does something football-y.
What that guy whose name I already forgot said.
Wilkerson doesn't have the needed value over CB at this point.
Would love to see him opposite Adams..]

I mean he didn't run around in circles and drop passes on routes a 5 year old could figure out but he injured himself regularly and flopped around like a fish a lot.

If they pulled that off Jordy and Cobb are gone.
Packers arenât standing pat at WR. Per @RapSheet, they are also interested in Sammy Watkins https://t.co/otF3GeLBRO
â Chris Wesseling (@ChrisWesseling) March 12, 2018
Even if the Packers' reported interest in Allen Robinson and Sammy Watkins turns into nothing, it has to mean something for the future of Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson. Packers clearly want to get better at WR.

Just for everyone's collective memory. What really helped Rollins to get drafted higher than he should have was after only one year of football, he collected 7 interceptions, and was named MAC defensive player of the year. Patterson could only dream ............

Agree. Robinson's market is said to be in the 8-10 mil a year area. I'd have to think Allison then would move into the slot if it happens. Then GB still drafts a WR or 2 among the dozen picks they have.
In the TT era, I wouldn't even bother to get excited about FA. But it appears with Gute a new line of thinking has arrived at 1265.
Lotta ballgame left.
For all we know Gute and his crowd is just leaking more than TT did. Or showing more leg. The restless fan base which is just getting hit with ticket price increases wants at least some semblance of activity so this "flurry" makes sense on a lot of levels. Besides, ain't that their job at 1265? Work the phones, boys.
Letting Jordy and Cobb know that alternatives are being looked at isn't a bad thing. If they want to stay then restructure their deals. If they are like Gerg then adios. And of course both 87 and 18 realize that playing with 12 is also a huge draw.
Last cutdown isn't until September so there is an eternity in NFL terms between now and then.
My guess is Jordy takes a cut or retires. Cobb is a smart guy and he will be looking at all the angles. I wish them both well whatever happens.
