I bet he wishes he didn't burn so much leniency standing by Drayton. We've seen a lot of horrendous coaching, but that guy was an all timer. Just speculating, but it seems like MLF has a tendency to defer to people with more confidence than him. He can't read the bullshit and gets bullshited. He was a really good fit for 12 to bring modern concepts to a stagnant offense, but I'm not sure he knows how to push enough buttons to build things from scratch. When 12 hinted at alpha it's more about cutting weight with players who don't have it, imo. MLF seems like the kind of coach that likes most of his guys and wants to get the best out of everyone. 12, if anything, was cutthroat.

All that said there's still 10 games to get things going.. Every week is a fresh start and i genuinely hope they find some success they can build off of. MLF seems like a good person who has things conceptually in order. It's just about dragging everyone with him.

There's rewards for diversity coaches that get promoted away to other teams. That needs to be a part of the Packers strategy moving forward. The 49ers use that to improve the talent of the team and give flexibility with draft capital. It's dumb not to make every effort to take advantage of that program. It's meant to give opportunity for fresh ideas instead of retreads like Barry.

Just to spell this out for those who may not know.  When a team loses a minority coach to another team for a higher position, that team gets a RD03 compensatory draft pick.  It's one of the only reasons SF has much of any draft capital the last several years.

Article from May.

Barry said, via Jason Wilde of Madison.com. ā€œWeā€™ve got to show up and play our best version of football, our best version of defense. We canā€™t be up one week and down the next. Weā€™ve got to find that consistency and show up every single week. The last five or six weeks of the season, we found that. We donā€™t have time to waste 10 weeks. Weā€™re in May. Thatā€™s what OTAs are for. Thatā€™s what the offseason is for. Thatā€™s what training camp is for. But weā€™ve got to be much more consistent than we were a year ago, week in and week out.ā€

Article from just before week 1 game.

ā€œIf you stay the same, you get passed by. The 2023 Green Bay Packers (defense) is going to be completely different than the 2022 Green Bay Packers. Thereā€™s no doubt.ā€ - Joe Barry

Well Joe, 10 weeks left, don't waste them.

Is this a bad time to mention the Joe Bury has forgotten more about defensive football than any of you dipshits will ever know?

I donā€™t need to be a rocket scientist to tell you itā€™s a fuck up if the rocket drops to the ground and blows up seconds after liftoff.

Joe Barryā€™s defenses have been blowing up for much too long.

Is this a bad time to mention I've forgotten more about Information Technology than Joe "dipshit" Bury has ever known?

Stopping Brett Rypien from scoring more than 3 points is not impressive. If he keeps the Packers defense in the current ranking or higher after the next 4 weeks, then I'll be slightly impressed.

I don't need to be a professional DC to know that playing 12 yards off the LOS in a 3rd & 7 situation isn't going to have good results. I also don't need to be a professional DC to know that getting caught in a defense multiple times with Preston Smith covering an ALL pro WR isn't going to have good results.

FYI....this week he goes up against Matt Canada who is also a horseshit OC & the Steeler fans want that guy gone as bad as we want Bury gone.

Here's Matt's burner account on Twitter

Bury has Z-E-R-O excuses. He has the talent to be a top 10 defense against the BEST offenses. If he wants to save his job he has to prove it the next 4-5 weeks.

I've got the Steelers scoring 24 this weekend

Oh trust me, I'm no Joe Bury fan and you'd struggle to find any Packer fan that is...   GB hasn't had a great defensive coordinator in a long time.  Strength of schedule clearly matters, but the Packers defense, statistically speaking, is better than the Eagles, Vikings, Raiders, Patriots, Bills, Texans, Bears, Titans, Giants, Rams, Jaguars, Cardinals, Seahawks, Colts, Bengals, Commanders, Buccaneers, Chargers, Steelers and Broncos.

GB isn't the only defense that will put an OLB in coverage.  The game of football is a chess match on each play.  That's why offenses put players in motion, run RPO's, conduct pre-snap reads and change plays at the line of scrimmage.  They are looking to get the matchups they want on every play.  On that particular play, the Raiders won the chess match by having Adams lined up across from Smith.  At that moment, GB had two options... call a timeout or run the play hoping the QB makes the wrong read.

Again, I'm no Joe Bury fan but to suggest he is dumb enough to think Smith can cover Adams is a stretch.  Any random dipshit fan knows better than that.

Most of the time, the defensive coordinator is only as good as the players. Fritz Shurmur was an average-at-best DC until he came to Green Bay and had Reggie White, S. Dotson, Gilbert Brown, and Sean Jones as his front 4. Dom Capers looked great with a secondary that included Woodson, Williams, Collins, and Shields. Not so much with D. Randall and friends.

As someone indicated above, I'm sure Barry knows a lot about defensive schemes. He's studied defensive schemes in detail for decades and would be a great guy to watch a game with to have him explain what teams are trying to do.

The issue with him is not knowledge, it's his defensive philosophy. Despite having (until recently) personnel to challenge the offensive schemes more aggressively, he chooses to sit back in soft, vanilla coverages so that he didn't give up big plays easily and force the offense to execute 10-12 play drives. That would have been a good fit with the D. Randall group in the mid 2010s, because they were outmatched badly. But, when you have a defense filled with first round talent and several Pro Bowl level guys, you don't need to do that. You can be the aggressor. Good teams can execute 10-12 play drives most of the time with the holes in the coverages Berry plays. Brett Rypien and Justin Fields can't.

It is his job to win chess matches. Put your guys in the best position to succeed, and if you do something to expose your soft underbelly, there should be a counter to protect the team. Maybe in this situation blitz to force the QB to make a quick decision so he makes a mistake, or sneak Preston out there at the last second to surprise the QB? He did none of the sort.  Kinda like putting nickel defense on 3rd and short to goal against a nickel package. He is misapplying the tricks of the trade. Joe Barry fails at this so often.
