Yeah, round-one TEs are about like round-one OGs: the value isn't there unless a guy is truly special at the position. There aren't Quenton Nelsons every year, every-other year or very often at all.

Athletic TEs are nice to have but you can make an offense run without one.  We've seen it with plenty of Super Bowl caliber offenses in the last 10 years.  You can't win a Super Bowl without pass rushers.

CUPACK, you got that right.  I think in today's NFL and football in general fans think all you have to do is score as many points as possible to win.  I still say you need defense to truly win in the NFL and I think the Packers have proven that in the last few years.

Another TE I like is Isaac Nauta from Georgia. Draft Network has him listed as a 5 Star recruit and in the 7 round mocks I've seen he was available anywhere from the 4th through the 7th Rounds. Some mocks had him going to the Packers at #12, too. Why would GB do that , when we can get him later or if the pick at #12 is a TE, why not go for one of the Iowa guys? There are options at TE.

Signing 2 FA OLB's can really change the complexion of this draft.  Could he still go DL if one of the big fellas is still there?  I don't think there is a OL or TE rated high enough to take at 12.  Maybe Gutitout is fixing to trade down and pick up another slot in RD2.  In any case this has to completely blow up everyone's mocks for GB.

Maybe, but maybe not. Expecting Allen, Bosa, Sweat and maybe Ferrell off the board by 12, Burns could easily still be the pick as he's  maybe viewed to be pretty raw to be an instant starter. He'd be a situational guy with a fifth-year option and actual depth (gasp!) at the position with/post-Fackrell. I know we're not used to seeing viable depth at defensive positions, but pass rush depth is a good thing.

Yep. Not that Gute wasn't thinking BPA, but now he has flexibility he didn't have 4 hours ago. Hell, they can go WR at 12 or really any position, just go get the best guy.

With a bunch of highly overpaid nobodys at OLB in 2018, Pettine managed to get the Packers to be 8th best in sacks and QB pressures. Now he has 2 real pash rushers plus a real safety.

Pettine must be salivating.

We can probably do an easy process of elimination with their target at 12. I think the front 7 is mostly locked down with the Smiths, Clark, Daniels, Mart, and Burks with the possibility of Mo Wilk in the mix as well. QB is locked down. The Smiths are both under 27, so I can’t imagine they’re looking to the future already. Maybe a situational rusher like Polite at 44, but they’ve got the position locked down for a while. There aren’t really Safeties, RBs, iOL or WRs that would be a value at 12 (right now). So we’re really looking at CB, OT, and TE which could be Byron Murphy, Deondre Baker, Greedy Williams (maybe), Jonah Williams, Jawaan Taylor, Fant, or Hock. Any of those players could honestly be justified given the need and the draft slot. CB is interesting because it’s actually an underrated year for athletic man cover guys in the mold of Jaire, Byron Murphy especially.

30 is a little more wild because there are lots of players who are justifiable in that range who fit a need.

Devin White would be the guy I want if they stay at 12.  Possible he may not last until then but he’s my #1 choice now that they’ve added a couple of decent pass rushers.

I have to admit though if Greedy Williams is there it may be tough to pass him up.   As we’ve seen far too often in a passing league you can never have enough good corners and while he may not be a tackling machine that dude can cover.

Greedy Williams is the guy I like & I think Gutey might be able to trade down a couple slots & still get him.

Fant or Hock at #30 - 1 of them will be there & perhaps both.

Really good big men on the D line dont come often. So At 12 they can hopefully still get another top edge LB or premiere  D lineman who can pass rush from the inside. Cant have too much depth there and would provide rotation to keep them all fresh. But if Gutey goes CB or ILB or Offensive tackle would be OK with that as well.  Picks 30 and 44 can be for Safety and or TE or Guard. WR or RB in round 3.

Can’t have enough pass rushers.  If Ferrell, Sweat or Burns is at 12, you take him and laugh at all the peasants that need edge players.

Except now RB and OL are pushed to the forefront.

I said it before these signings even (a few pages back).  Screw it, take the best RB in the draft at 12  (Josh Jacobs).  Him or the stud OT Jonah Williams.

Boris,

If both ARE there, who do you take?

If both Fant & Hock are there at #30 - I'd either trade down or take Hock. I like Hock better than Fant - Helps the O-Line more.

The fact they have discussed mark Ingraham indicates they would take a running back high. They are using free agency to fix the defense. Running back, ol te, and slot wr will probably be 4 of the first 5 selections.

It is not pessimistic to say Jones will get hurt, it is a reality.  It is not even that he weighs 185 pounds:  All running backs on every team get hurt before the season is up.

Yes Jones is a good running back.  But see above.  Count on him being out.

Now how do we look (with Jones out)?  Yes RB is a need. Williams is not going to cut it.

Goddamnit Pistol.... no. You don’t take a RB at 12. Nothing changes. You take the best damn player that falls to you. Edge... D. White, etc. I’ll even take D. Bush. Just to blow Henya’s skirt up, I’d consider the stud OL that may fall.

This presents splendid options. Still need my Gutey-call.

I could just as easily see 3 of the first 4 picks going offense (OL, TE, WR or OL, TE, OL) as I could just the opposite (S, MLB, Edge) but either way things got much more interesting today. They can truly go BPA in the draft now.

Jawaan Taylor with #12?  Apparently the Packers are "very interested", which of course means nothing.

I feel much stronger about the pick being a WR than I did yesterday

Yeah, if it isn't a hog on either side of the line I get the feeling a skill player may be the pick.  Keeps Rodgers happy.  They better be drafting at least 2 more oline then.

With today’s signings that will actually happen tomorrow, I’m thinking Gute is thinking a T will be there at 12.  Possibly the top WR.

Depending how the rest of free agency shakes out I would not be shocked at all if Gute goes OL at 12 or takes a WR.   I personally would like to see ILB or safety in the first round but I wouldn't complain if he went heavy on offense.   I trust the dude that is for sure.

This.  Agree wholeheartedly.  Saw on internets that Z. Smith rushed from inside on 75%+ or something on 3rd down.  Ferrell seems like a clone of the 2 Smiths with pass rush style - very good with hands, not very bendy.  Would love an EDGE like Burns.

If the pass rusher is there....take ANOTHER pass rusher. I'm not even near joking.

I want defense & pressure on QB's all game long.

I am with you that you can never go wrong with getting pressure on the QB.  It helps secondary as well with not having to cover for a long time.

I read that Za'Darius is coming off of some sort of hernia injury. If that is true, I'd take another Edge guy at #12 or #30, just for back up, in case Za'Darius reinjures himself. If top rated guys like Devin Smith, Quinnen Williams, or Ed Oliver fall to #12, you grab one of them. If  those guys are gone and it's Josh Allen, Clellin Ferrell, Brian Burns, Montez Sweat, that falls to #12, problem solved. Save pick #30 for a TE or BPA from Gute's Board.
