Traded 12 to Jets for pick 13 and WR Corey Davis
Mayer is more Paul Coffman, or maybe a poor-man's MArk Andrews, than Gronkowski, I think. He's a bit shorter and slower than Andrews, but seems to be well-rounded. He just hits the benchmarks but doesn't exceed any of them.
This is exactly why Olinemen shouldnβt have to run the 40. This situation would never consistently happen in a game. pic.twitter.com/WsqMdoUdIg

@FLPACKER posted:I just don't know about Mayer. Was very productive at ND, made a ton of contested catches, tough, can block, ....nicknamed "Baby Gronk", his 40 time is similar to Gronk's, but he is 2 inches shorter and 15 pounds lighter than Gronk. In addition, his 10 yard split in the 40 was the worst of any TE that ran Saturday.
Maybe a good nickname for D.W. would be " The Dark Gronk". Thats all I have!
We can't lose sight of Kincaid at the TE position. He didn't participate at the combine because of injury but is scheduled to perform at Utah's pro day. Was not asked to run block much in college, but could be the best receiving TE in this class.
There's such a huge spread in terms of how much draft capital each team has in their quiver.
Top team ( Houston) has more than 3 times as much value heading into the draft as the bottom team. ( Miami)

Post-combine mock #1, assuming a trade with the Jets for ARod. It would be sadly ironic if the pick we get were spent on a wide receiver, but that's the way it turned out. Kancey on the board at 15 was just too good to pass up.

Kancey's folks must've been Hank Williams, Sr. fans.
My guess is if Rodgers is traded, that pick will not be the one made by Green Bay as it will be traded. TT was on record as he wanted to trade the Favre pick to avoid the direct comparisons involved.

I see you drafted a QB in the 5th round. With Rodgers packing his bags and Love chomping at the bit we do need a backup QB. Do you think we might be better off trying to draft one higher in the draft , say 2nd rd down after we get DW in the first RD ? LaPorta could be special though. Kuntz looked good as well also but DW could be a game changer if you ask me !
I think Tune will probably get drafted higher than that. He showed up well at the Combine... not so well at the Senior Bowl. But, the potential is there. I like DW, too. I think he'd make a great Packer.
I was all giddy over DW's combine but Fennel pointed out on twitter that as dynamic as he was in Indy, those attributes didn't often show up on tape.
Doesn't mean he can't be as effective as Gronk, who also looked like a plodder, but they don't play underwear olympics on Sundays.
The other thing is how much can actually show up on tape with that team? Washington has the makings of a stud TE and he was still probably #2 at his position with Brock Bowers also there.
That one-handed catch he made at the Combine is not the first time that's been captured with him doing it. He has great hands. Watch his highlight film. He may not be the fastest TE, but he has all the tools necessary for success in the NFL. At his size, running a 4.65 40 is impressive, and his 10-yard split is right up there with everyone else.
i think he only looks slow, his stride is so large he's actually rippin chicken.

I see others have also posted comments about "fast" TEs. I don't think the Big Dog was particularly fast. Tonyan, either. I will take a slower TE, if he can block, catch the ball to move the chains, or score TDs in the red zone. I also saw that in a recent post-combine mock draft, that Mayer fell into the 2nd round. There should be plenty of good TEs for the Packers to pick from, in this draft. I also think they will try to get two TEs, this draft.
From all accounts, this draft is overflowing with TE's, top to bottom. And as luck would have it, GB really needs one or two.
I also remember a draft not too long ago that was flush with good WR's, at least to the same extent. GB also needed one or two. They took one, in RD3. Amari.
So paint me skeptical about Tight End Christmas in GB.

High-level WRs go in the top 20 picks of the first round. With some rare exceptions (Kyle Pitts), you can still find very good TEs into the 3rd and 4th rounds. If a WR lasts beyond the 2nd round, there are some concerns about fit in the NFL.

If you want to frame it positively, you could say his output you could see in college game film vs. dynamic physical ability was similar to Rashan Gary.
You could probably name dozens of guys who look like Tarzan and end up playing like Jane, just like they did in college.
I don't think DW is one of those guys. I'd have no qualms drafting him anywhere from the lower first through 2nd round.

Typically yes, but 2021 was a "WR draft". This was talked about ad nauseum in the press. Amon Ra was taken after Amari.
My point was just because a draft is full of talent at a position that the Packers have a need at, doesn't mean they'll use much capital on it. There is a lot of talk and excitement around here about TE prospects when I don't know that they'll even draft one, much less 2. Maybe in RD5?
I don't see the DW/Bubba comp. I remember watching Bubba at Miami and while he got the ball a lot, I don't recall him looking like any kind of athletic freak. Certainly didn't have 4.6 speed. His image is in the dictionary under "plodder".
I'm a little surprised Wolf spent RD1 #15 on him. May be why they haven't picked a TE high since. Kind of kidding.
