The two scenarios are that the Packers would prefer to keep Rodgers as their starter another year, or they prefer to move on. Assuming they prefer to move on... Rodgers doesn't have much incentive to restructure a deal to bring more draft picks back from the Jets. He can just Carr it, why cost his new team draft capital they can spend in ways to help him and his new team? "Hold the Packers hostage" as some call it.

I don't think keeping Rodgers is an option unless they want to lose Love and really put the future in a tail spin.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Rodgers can't just Carr it. Carr had a $40 million roster bonus so the Raiders had to cut him since they bench him the last two games of the season so he wouldn't get hurt and they had to eat that roster bonus. Carr was in such a good position he was working out a contract with the Saints before he even got cut.

Nah Brandt is just another bobblehead at this point. He was saying Rodgers was gone last year. I can't recall the year before but I think he's been on the Rodgers is leaving train for a while. Sooner or later he'll be right. I'm thinking the preponderance of evidence is on his side this year.

But he doesn't know.

Tbh, until a certain leprechaun stepped in, AR was gone last year.

At this point, the Jets sent their entire "brain trust" out to meet with Rodgers only ups the ante for Saleh and the GM. For them to go out there and basically publicly announce they are, they must already have the trade done. They know what they are giving up.

If that plane comes back without a deal from Rodgers, the Jets leadership looks even more foolish than they already do. It's hard to pivot back from this to go after your next guy.

I don't think the Jets leadership look foolish at all.  They're trying to win football games and there's a top 10 QB available that is one year removed from back to back MVP seasons.

Think about it this way...  Since 2000, the Jets have drafted Chad Pennington, Brooks Bollinger, Kellen Clemons, Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith, Sam Darnold and Zach Wilson.  A few of them were very high draft picks and none of them amounted to shit in NY.

It makes sense to go after a HOF QB with a bit of tread left on the tires.

Yep, after Carr broke their hearts and signed with the Saints. The Jets really worked hard selling Carr on the Jets.

Rebound time. But does AR want them?

I think Carr was a done deal with the Saints before he ever hit free agency. I don't think the Jets had much chance of signing Carr nor did they want to.

If he really wants to play as much as he says it's the best situation possible outside of dealing him to be QB1 at KC which is fantasy, he will accept. Great D, good young weapons...they can address OL issues in FA. He has his BFF Nate Hackett there calling plays.

Hell, I think the Jets have a better shot at Super Bowl title than the Packers right now with Rodgers.

I don't think this has anything to do with him wanting to be wooed or wined and dined...people I know who knew him in college said he was always a guy who took his time with decisions, whether it was what kind of shoes to buy, or what he was going to eat for dinner. And during the season he's a robot. I think that's why he values his "away time," so much.

Big decision for him...he's waited this long, why not take a couple more days. Plenty of time until league new year deadline and draft.

So the Owner, GM, Head Coach, OC and who knows who else is on the plane.  That to me says it's a done deal.  Too many head honchos there.  Feels more like it's a celebration meeting as opposed to a sales meeting

Knowing the history of the Jets it wouldn't surprise me if they overloaded the plane and run out of fuel somewhere over the desert.

Why can't he Carr it? "Well we'll just make you Jordan's backup" would be an obvious bluff. Maybe Rodgers and the Sledhill Gang have a gentlemen's agreement on that stuff, but we're not really privy to the details.

I thought the bobblehead consensus on the Rodgers contract was that it gave Aaron power in the case that GB wanted to move on.

He's not married. No kids. I don't even think he has a girlfriend at the moment. Very little to pull Aaron towards retirement.

The Jets have cap problems before adding whatever it is they would be paying AR. Few weapons. FA isn't solving the mess their OL is.

Plus! How long will it take his new teammates to learn the hand signals?

Peter King essentially said if this thing is going to get done, Rodgers will have to commit to Jets for the next two years...one and done won't work for them. A pretty reasonable ask IMO. JMO.

To me this makes no sense so it fits in perfectly with the Jets laughingstock way of running a franchise.  Rodgers wasn't fully committed in 2022, is 50/50 about coming back for 2023 and the Jets already want to know if he'll commit to 2024?   I'm sure they'll get a straight answer on that one. How could he even know?  If that's where they're starting their asks of him this is going to be an entertaining mess.

Hey Jets, you're buying a lottery ticket for a 2023 run. Treat it for what it is and if your organization is run well and the year goes well and he feels well he might want to come back for another crack.

They're setting themselves up to make promises to their fan base they won't be able to keep. Do they not think he's going to have to lie through his teeth answering questions about being committed for more than one year in his first press conference? More likely he equivicates and the back pages are off to the races before he's thrown his first pass. Welcome to the Jets. Aarons's going to get a good appreciation for just how well the Packers are run if he ends up there this season.

Rodgers doesn't have nearly the leverage Carr had. Carr was benched the final two games assuring that the Raiders were not going to exercise his $40 mil roster bonus. Why would Carr accept a trade when he was going to be a free agent and deal with any team before the actual free agency period? Rodgers is under contract, big difference.

I think the Jets will be happy to take Rodgers even if it does end up being for one season. They will just make the deal with conditional picks. In 2022 Rodgers signed essentially a 3 year contract so his intention was to play 22, 23, and 24. If he has a good year with the Jets he'll play in 2024. I don't think retirement was ever an option this upcoming season, just Rodgers grabbing a little attention that he needs.

I'll go on record and say I WONT trust this till there is a news conference/announcement.  It will feed AR's ego, but until then, Im not getting too excited.

But, I really hope this happened, and that Love emerges as a decent QB.

I hope Love is a star.

I assume with the publicity this is getting, the deal is (mostly) done and now the Jets will wine and dine AR.  I think it is entirely possible he plays two years, playing with a top defense can't hurt.

All that is left for Packer fans is for all the folks who desperately wanted him gone to complain the compensation wasn't enough

@NumberThree posted:

Do the Jets owners even know how they can structure a deal for Rodgers? The have no meaningful draft capital (13 to our 15) and are already over the cap as it is.

The Packers won't offload him unless they absorb a lot of the cap pain. The Jets will effectively bankrupt themselves for 2-3 years. They are not 1 season away (or 2 or 3 for that matter) from a Super Bowl... especially by offloading picks and cash for Rodgers.

And let's not even get into the Jets extraordinarily deep, talents, and injury free depth chart at O-line and WR.

Not a lot of thought put into this post.

Get it done and move to the next chapter. All the collective discussion that McCarthy had hit a dead end in GB applies to this situation as well. The only motivation that remains with Rodgers in GB is the $$$. If he really wants another ring, maybe new scenery will kindle that. But it won't be realized in GB, and hopefully both parties have come to accept that. Everyone involved needs a clean slate.

Deal contingent on Jets getting one of: Bakhtiari, Jenkins or Zach Tom, with extra compensation on a declining scale with each guy. Is there a realistic scenario where that guy isn’t Tom?.

Let's throw Nijman into this mix.
He's likely better than anyone on the Jets roster, and can be a starter.

It may not do anything for ARod, but it's not like he is a crap player. And he wouldn't cost the Jets much to do a deal with him.

Nijman isn’t under contract, iirc. He had a one-year deal.

The Jets line is actually pretty good, when healthy. The issue is they haven’t been, especially Becton at LT. The may need to get center straightened out since I think he’s a free agent, but they do have talent up front.
