@AdamSchefter: Just in time for camp: Titans announced they agreed to contract terms with their first-round pick, QB Marcus Mariota. Done deal.

@adbrandt: Mariota was not going to miss a minute of camp. Preset contract, no leverage to get Titans to change offset policy.

@AlbertBreer: Per source, the Titans and Marcus Mariota were able to reach a compromise with partial offsets as part of his deal.

An issue in rookie contracts, especially under the new CBA.

Offset language relates to what happens to a player’s salary if he’s cut during the first four years of his career, while he’s still playing on his rookie contract. For the top 15 to 20 picks in the draft, those four-year salaries will be fully guaranteed, even if a player is waived at some point during those four seasons. For example, if a player has $4MM in guaranteed money remaining on his contract and is cut, he’ll still be owed that $4MM.

However, if a team has written offset language into the contract, that club can save some money if and when the player signs with a new team. For example, if that player who had $4MM in guaranteed money left on his contract signs with a new club on a $1MM deal, his old team would only be on the hook for $3MM, with the new team making up the difference. If there’s no offset language on that first deal, the old team would continue to be on the hook for the full $4MM, and the player would simply earn an additional $1MM from his new club.here:

Application in the Mariota case (from Yahoo Sports):

We explored why it has taken so long to sign the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft, and it came down to "offset language" in his contract. In short, adding offset language protects teams from having to pay out the full guaranteed portion of a player's contract if they happen to decide not to pick up the final year of his five-year contract. Without offsets, a player can collect the full money from the team while also "double dipping" by signing and collecting money from his new team as a free agent.

The Titans sent a firm stance publicly (and likely told Mariota's camp this the second they drafted him, or perhaps before): They would insist he'd take the offsets in the contract and that it was a precedent they were not willing to bend on. They hadn't given it up to previous first-round picks, and they were not about to start with Mariota, as much as they apparently like him.

Re Gresham surgery, yup, for a herniated disk in March.

A quick web surf indicates:

Former first round pick who, despite making 2 Pro Bowls and averaging over 50 catches a season, wore out his welcome in Cincy, coaches reportedly thought he was soft and too penalty prone;

Making the rounds over the past week or so, visits to Oakland, New Orleans, and the Cardinals so far. Saints and possibly Cards offered contract but he's still out shopping.

Speaking of dumdum. What could possibly go wrong here?:

Via Mike Rodak of ESPN.com, the Bills have instructed McCoy to remove an Instragram post inviting only women to a party scheduled for Sunday night.

The post used a Bills logo behind a photo of McCoy.

“We have reached out to LeSean and informed him that players are not permitted to use team marks for personal use without prior permission from the team,” the Bills said in a statement issued to ESPN.com.

It’s unclear whether the party also has been scrapped. Via Anna Orso of PennLive.com, anyone responding to the ladies-only RSVP was required to confirm that she is 21, with full name as seen on an appropriate ID. Any interested guests also were directed to submit a picture and to provide information regarding Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter accounts.

Anyone attending also was informed that a confidentiality agreement would be signed upon entry. Upon confirmation, the guest will receive “pick up/drop off location and attire” information.
