If he's healthy then Gresham would give GB a good option at TE. I like Rodgers, but he's a 2nd year player...he's a 2nd year player trending upwards, but we shouldn't count on him to be a legit #1 TE right now. Quarless obviously isn't mature enough to be counted on to be a legit #1 either. Gresham is a bulkier version of Jermichael Finley IMO, more receiving TE than all-around TE, but he's a good receiver. If his back checks out and his demands aren't ridiculous then it could be a good option.

Good call

His 2nd contract in GB was commensurate with a " back- up TE" so apparently both the Packers and Q's agent agreed on his lack of upside.

Gresham was the 21st pick in 2010, one spot before WR Demaryius Thomas and 2 slots ahead of Bulaga

@RapSheet: The #Saints are releasing OLB Junior Galette, source said. They’ve paid him $18M since last year. Wow.

@RapSheet: Junior Galette recently met with @NFL officials, who are looking into 2 off-the-field incidents. #Saints have been frustrated for a while.

@LyonsYellin: The Saints have been mulling this over for a while and exploring all their options after beach video of what looked like Galette surfaced.

I don't think Q's upside is elite #1 TE, but I think he can be an adequate #1 TE. I don't think he's less talented than a guy like Brent Celek was in his prime. Celek was a functional #1 TE who could block a little, was reliable pass catcher, and every once in a while could get behind the D and get some yards. If he the attitude of Jordy Nelson or Randall Cobb, Q could be our #1, I don't get the sense he has that kind of attitude or maturity though which is why he probably always will be a backup.

Guys like Q are fascinating. Not sure if it was his first or second year but there was a play when he went in motion outside and came back inside after the snap and just destroyed Jared Allen. Rodgers couldn't find a receiver, kept the play alive by rolling around the pocket and then found Q for 20. 5 years later you're left wondering why that guy never really progressed. If that play was his ceiling why didnt we see more of it? Did he just lose interest? Did the coaches decide he couldnt be trusted?

I still can't believe he's on the roster after the Miami fiasco. He's not even a possession TE. He is exactly what we've seen after 5 years.

Q got into trouble in high school and again at Penn State, including underage drinking and a DUI among other kerfluffles

He did OK for a 5th rounder, but he's not the future

that's the one that has stuck in my craw the most. we needed something positive that day right then...  I don't know if that started the downward spiral or if it was inevitable but I lost any faith in him ever becoming any better.  the rest of the year did nothing to remove that feeling.  middler, yep.

and, no, fedya, not bette.

How many times do we need to see the PACKERS linked to a player only to have them sign elsewhere the very next day.

Thanks Ted. Thanks Russ.

@alexmarvez: Hard to believe lots of smart folks in @Saints front office got into this mess. Lots more than @drewbrees contract.

@spotrac: The #Saints now have $161.7M cap dollars allocated to 55 2016 players per the release of Junior Galette, which carries $17.55M in dead cap.

YATittle, I agree Kennard Backman will be the biggest benefactor in all of this, and I do think he will surprise many fans with some great play. The guy was catching everything in OTAs, and he turns it upfield quickly. To me, this is the kind of TE McCarthy has been dying to use since the loss of Finley. Fast, sure, good hands.

Mitchell Henry might also come into play here. For a guy who wasn't used a whole lot at Western Kentucky, he still caught a lot of TDs. Out of 78 total receptions there, 12 went for TDs. Good size too.

We'll be fine, with or without Quarless. Richard Rodgers and Kennard Backman are going to kick some ass this year.

And yet when the Packers were down to their very last play vs Miami - who did they throw it to ? Quarless for the win

Packers TEs accounted for 51 catches for 558 yards and 6 TDs in 2014, not too shabby

Quarless has some tools which got him drafted.  But the knock on him coming out of Penn State was that he drops to many balls in spite of setting the record for catches by a TE at Penn State.

When Finley went down with injury in 2010, Quarless got a lot more playing time.  He was prone to dropping a pass every once and a while.  But the WRs & AR carries the Pack offensively to a SB win.  Trouble is Quarless never really developed beyond that much.  But he is a much better blocker than he was in college - which doesn't mean he is totally what he needs to be in the pros.

GB this year is stacked at WR.  So maybe we have what we need or what will work at TE for this year anyway.
